Ch. 101Saffron City and the full-team battle with Moe! (9)
Plot points and events
- After Glaceon defeats Luxray, Liu Qing sends out Porygon-Z. Moe answers with Sylveon, hoping to wear it down, but Liu Qing uses Lock-On followed by Hyper Beam, defeating Sylveon immediately.
- Moe’s final Pokémon is Reuniclus. While Porygon-Z is recovering from Hyper Beam, Reuniclus sets up Trick Room, letting the slower Pokémon act first.
- Porygon-Z marks Reuniclus with Lock-On, while Reuniclus attacks with Psyshock. Porygon-Z avoids the strike by separating its head and body.
- Both Pokémon use powerful Electric-type attacks—Zap Cannon and Thunder—which collide and explode, knocking them apart. Porygon-Z uses the opening to apply Lock-On again.
- Reuniclus attacks with Psyshock once more, but Moe has anticipated Porygon-Z’s evasive trick: she has it scatter the orbs, striking the separated body parts. Reuniclus then follows with Focus Blast. Porygon-Z recovers and evades by separating again; the chapter ends with it facing Reuniclus, the battle unresolved.
Character developments and interactions
- Liu Qing remains composed and tactically alert, relying on Lock-On to ensure his attacks connect and adapting quickly to Trick Room.
- Moe persists despite losing Sylveon and shows sharp observation by working out that Porygon-Z’s separated parts must stay within a limited range. She turns its usual evasion tactic against it.
- The Trainers recognize each other’s strength and engage in a contest of contrasting advantages: Liu Qing’s reliable targeting and Porygon-Z’s evasive ability against Moe’s speed manipulation and Reuniclus’s controlled attacks.
Significant themes
- Adaptation and counterplay: Familiar tactics can be overcome when an opponent studies their limits.
- Battlefield strategy: Lock-On and Trick Room reshape the fight, while timing and exploiting openings matter as much as raw power.
- Respectful rivalry: Both Trainers remain committed and resourceful, treating the battle as a genuine test of skill.
