Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Level 98 Super Douluo 58 Introduced at this rank. His devouring martial soul allows him to increase soul power through eating and drinking.
Temporary boost approaching Limit Douluo 272 Burns his life flame while cornered by Du Busi. The boost does not constitute a permanent breakthrough and fails to overcome Du Busi.

Appearance

Xuan Zi’s usual appearance is conspicuously unkempt, with tangled hair, greasy clothing, and a mouth often shining with chicken grease 58.

  • Clothing: Tattered garments and coarse hemp clothing 58 137.
  • Habitual accessories: A wine gourd and chicken drumstick; the gourd also hangs at his waist 58 137.
  • Disguises: Black robes conceal him during the exchange-student ambush; he adds a mask when attacking the Snow Demon Sect 233 271.

Personality

Xuan Zi is lazy, gluttonous, and easily pleased by flattery. His appetite has a martial-soul basis, but he also habitually leaves administrative work to others. Even after becoming Pavilion Master, he delegates most matters to Song Yunzhi and Yan Shaozhe while continuing his routine of eating and sleeping 58 231.

His confidence in his strength repeatedly becomes complacency. He promises absolute safety before the inspection mission, remains outside while students rest among corpses, and later delays responding to a distress signal while enjoying the power of Holy Spirit Banners. He grieves when students die, but his return to familiar habits and repeated failures show that remorse does not reliably change his conduct 58 64 67 236 238.

Xuan Zi places Shrek’s prestige above fair competition and rivals’ safety. His methods escalate from tournament manipulation and coercive recruitment to assassination attempts and attacks on contestants. He justifies these actions as protecting continental peace, while explicitly arguing that strength and victory determine righteousness 84 114 231 271.

History

Inspection Mission Disaster

Yan Shaozhe recruits Xuan Zi to lead Shrek’s official and reserve tournament teams on an evil-soul-master inspection mission. Xuan Zi also claims authority over reserve-team selection, confident that his Level 98 cultivation can prevent any disaster 58.

After the official team clears a hideout, Xuan Zi eats and drinks outside while the students rest inside the cavern. The surviving Death Messenger prepares a corpse explosion using the bodies accumulated there. Xuan Zi rushes inside when the attack begins, but the mission still ends in devastating student casualties, and the Death Messenger escapes 64 65 67.

Xuan Zi offers to resign from both his Inspection Corps command and his Pavilion elder position. Mu En removes his command but retains him as an elder, requiring him to remain in the Pavilion as atonement. The disaster also prompts mandatory flying and defensive soul tools for inner-court missions. Once the immediate threat of harsher punishment passes, Xuan Zi resumes eating chicken drumsticks 67.

First Tournament: Manipulation and Student Seizures

To preserve Shrek’s championship record, Xuan Zi proposes sending fresh Soul Kings into the tournament after opponents have been worn down. Mu En condemns this approach, insisting that Shrek’s victories must come through genuine strength 68.

Xuan Zi subsequently asks Emperor Xu Jiawei to arrange concentrated attacks against Sun Moon competitors and preferential referee protection for the other teams. Xu refuses that particular proposal because it could provoke war. Later, however, the two hold another private meeting, and Xuan Zi brings Dai Yueheng and four Soul Kings as reinforcements. His eventual confession confirms a separate agreement with Xu to rig matches 84 85 99 118.

At the Starlight Auction House, Xuan Zi uses his strength to pressure rivals over an Ice Jade Scorpion Left Arm Bone. Jing Hongchen confronts him, and the Ice Empress intervenes. Their battle is closely matched until an unidentified overwhelming force strikes Xuan Zi; the Ice Empress then gives him two black eyes and escapes with the bone 89 90 91.

During the tournament, Xuan Zi attempts to take Lin Xi after mistaking a soul tool’s ice effect for an ultimate-ice martial soul. The dispute escalates into a fight with the Sun Moon delegation’s protector. After Chen Mo reveals twin ultimate martial souls and wins the deciding match against Shrek, Xuan Zi tries to seize both Chen Mo and Lin Xi. Du Busi intercepts and beats him despite both men then being Level 98 Super Douluos 109 110 114 115 116.

Punishment and Exchange Negotiations

Back at Shrek, Mu En beats Xuan Zi and forces him to confess his tournament misconduct. Xuan Zi had also shifted blame onto Wang Yan, removing him from teaching and assigning him to library work. The Pavilion elders nevertheless argue that Shrek needs Xuan Zi’s strength, resulting in confinement and a temporary ban from meetings rather than dismissal 118 119.

Mu En makes successful exchange-program negotiations a condition for ending Xuan Zi’s confinement. The assignment is also intended to temper his impulsiveness before he becomes Pavilion Master 137 138.

Xuan Zi initially restrains himself under Jing Hongchen’s mockery, but eventually attacks the meeting room’s transparent barrier when negotiations sour. The barrier barely dents, and Jing reveals the Hall’s cannon shells and Turbine Detonation Device. Yan Shaozhe and Qian Duoduo help prevent further outbursts, allowing an agreement to be reached 140 142 145 146.

When the exchange begins, Xuan Zi is kept at Shrek because the elders fear another disastrous journey under his leadership 155.

Pavilion Master and Exchange-Student Ambush

After Mu En’s death, Xuan Zi succeeds him as Sea God Pavilion Master. He plans to disguise himself as an Evil Soul Master and kill Sun Moon’s returning exchange students, hoping to frame the Holy Spirit Cult and provoke conflict between it and the Sun Moon Empire. Yan Shaozhe voices concerns but agrees to remove Shrek’s students from the area promptly 231.

At the Mingdou Mountains, Xuan Zi unexpectedly discovers that actual Holy Spirit Cult forces are also lying in ambush. Chen Mo detects the danger, and Ye Yulin’s Sun Moon Divine Needle destroys much of the ambush site. Xuan Zi escapes but is subsequently confronted by Ye Yulin’s group 233 234.

To conceal his identity, Xuan Zi fights with Holy Spirit Banners. After noticing Shrek’s distress signal, he loses both banners to concentrated fire, reveals himself, and breaks away. He arrives too late: only Bei Bei, Huo Yuhao, He Caitou, and Ling Luochen remain among Shrek’s exchange students. Xian Lin’er angrily challenges him over his delayed response 236 238.

Ye Yulin identifies Xuan Zi, but the Sun Moon side lacks conclusive evidence of his assassination plan. Du Busi confronts and beats him, then cooperates with Jing Hongchen to establish the Snow Demon Sect and its Snow Demon Gazette. The newspaper publicizes the ambush allegation; Xuan Zi denies responsibility and threatens retaliation 251 260 261.

Snow Demon Sect Attack and Capture

During the next tournament in Mingdu, Xuan Zi decides to attack rival contestants despite Cai Mei’er and Song Yunzhi’s objections. He chooses the Snow Demon Sect as his first target in retaliation for its exposés 267 269.

Disguised as a soul engineer, he fires a Level 8 Soul Cannon at the sect’s rooms, also striking neighboring accommodation. His plan is to leave the weapon behind and implicate the Sun Moon Empire. Du Busi shields the occupants and pursues him, breaking his defensive soul tools and forcing him to reveal the Godly Taotie Bull 271.

Xuan Zi burns his life flame, attacks the sect members to distract Du Busi, and attempts to flee. Chen Mo intercepts him and leaves him unconscious with spiritual attacks and an Energy-Gathering Light strike. Holy Spirit Cult members subsequently carry him away during their retreat 272 273.

Du Busi publicly announces Xuan Zi’s attack and alleged collusion with Evil Soul Masters, while declaring that the investigation treated these as Xuan Zi’s personal actions rather than Shrek Academy’s. His actual removal from the battlefield leaves him in the custody of his longstanding enemies 273 274 275.

Brainwashing

Ye Xishui orders the cult to keep Xuan Zi alive and turn him into a weapon. Zhongli Wu undertakes the brainwashing personally because ordinary methods are unlikely to work on a Level 98 Super Douluo 274 275.

Zhongli Wu brings Ma Xiaotao and Tang Ya before him. When the two restrain Xuan Zi, his distress creates an opening for a Mental Mark to be implanted in his Sea of Consciousness. Zhongli Wu rewrites his perceptions, imposing eternal loyalty to the Holy Spirit Cult, obedience to its master, and hostility toward Shrek. Xuan Zi is designated the cult’s Great Enshrined 275 276.

Trivia

  • “Chicken Leg Douluo” originates from mockery of his constant eating; Xu Jiawei privately contrasts the nickname with his formal title, Taotie Douluo 84.
  • The narration jokingly calls him the Holy Spirit Cult’s “Supreme Elder” well before his capture. His later, explicitly imposed cult position is Great Enshrined 137 251 276.
  • His opposition to soul tools does not prevent him from acknowledging Illustrious Virtue Hall’s manufacturing quality or purchasing its technology for a covert attack 271.
