The bitter north wind wailed like a child in pain. Animals huddled together for warmth, their thick, coarse hides protecting them against the fiercest storms.
They formed a circle around the calves shivering and bleating in their midst. Heads crowned with enormous horns drooped toward the snow-covered ground, eyes squeezed shut against the howling wind and snow. Though their own breath had frozen over their noses and mouths, they stubbornly remained where they stood.
Wolves and bears curled up in their dens, waiting for the blizzard to pass. The former stayed safely with their packs, while the latter endured their fate alone. However hungry they grew, nothing could make these animals venture out for food until the grieving wind ceased its lament and the blinding snow tired of its roar.
The cold wind sweeping in from the ocean also struck the Lordaeron subcontinent, bringing what could be called its harshest winter in a hundred years. In Lordaeron City, houses were being reinforced with the army's help to withstand the freezing winds.
Time was merciless. In the blink of an eye, winter had arrived, and more than half a year had passed since Rex returned from Mount Hyjal.
During those months, Gilneas had been quiet, Stormwind City had been quiet, and the Horde had been quiet. All of Azeroth had been quiet. Both the Horde and the Alliance, those two enormous beasts, hid in their corners and silently licked their wounds. Neither had stirred up trouble without cause.
"What dreadful weather." He pushed open the door, letting snowflakes and gusts of wind into the room. The fire inside still burned stubbornly, filling the wooden house with warmth and comfort as he murmured under his breath.
