The next day, the sunlight was just right, cutting alternating bands of light and shadow across the floor through the blinds.
Amon was packing his luggage when the phone on the table suddenly vibrated. An encrypted overseas number flashed across the screen.
He answered it, and Principal Angers's distinctive voice came through the receiver, carrying a slight British accent, elegant and composed.
"Good morning, Commissioner He Xiaomeng. I hope I haven't disturbed your sweet dreams." There seemed to be an imperceptible hint of amusement in Angers's voice.
"Principal, what can I do for you?" Amon replied, walking over to the window.
"To make a long story short, The Academy has always had a tradition of pairing experienced hands with newcomers for outstanding talents specially recruited into the Executive Department. Every newcomer is assigned a seasoned commissioner as a mentor for one-on-one guidance, helping you become familiar with the environment, procedures, and survival skills more quickly."
Angers paused before continuing. "The senior responsible for mentoring you is currently carrying out a mission. He suggested that perhaps you could get a feel for the atmosphere of Executive Department missions in advance... I think it's a good proposal. What do you think?"
Amon did not answer immediately. His fingers unconsciously traced the window frame, leaving faint marks behind.
"What kind of mission is it?" he asked.
Angers chuckled softly on the other end of the line, his tone gentle yet beyond dispute.
"Unfortunately, due to strict confidentiality requirements, I cannot disclose any details before the mission officially begins. Those are the rules. I hope you understand."
