Walter sat in a broad chair, turned a letter over and placed it face down on the desk, then covered it with a stack of documents.

He knew of Amon's philosophy regarding Spirit Rings. He had exceptionally strict, almost harsh requirements for the type of Soul Beast he chose, something that had already been apparent when he helped Yan Jin select her third Spirit Ring.

The advantage was that it greatly increased the odds of obtaining the desired soul skill. The drawbacks were equally obvious: it consumed manpower and resources, and required a considerable wait.

At lower levels, it was still manageable. After all, the required Soul Beasts would not be too old, and there were plenty of them. Someone would always come across one.

But as the required age of the Spirit Rings steadily rose, suitable targets became increasingly scarce. Powerful Soul Beasts also tended to live in highly dangerous places, making this hunting method more and more unsuitable.

It was not that the method was bad; its cost-effectiveness was simply too low. Even major powers could not afford such consumption.
