History

Creation

Pan Gu opened the world by cleaving chaos with the Pan Gu Axe while fighting the three thousand Chaos Demon Gods. More than half of the demon gods fell. Clear qi rose to become heaven, while turbid qi sank to become earth 1.

When heaven and earth threatened to collapse back into chaos, Pan Gu held them apart with his body. The fallen demon gods’ remains nourished the land and gave rise to fundamental laws. After more than a million years, Pan Gu succumbed to his wounds; his eyes became the sun and moon, and his spine became Mount Buzhou 1.

Hundreds of thousands of years later, Lin Tian awakened on an island as an ordinary spiritual vine. The world was still in its earliest age, with abundant life and relatively little strife 1.

Fierce Beast Calamity

By the time Lin Tian reached the mainland, enormous ferocious beasts roamed the continent. Even the smallest beasts he observed appeared to measure tens of thousands of zhang, prompting him to recognize the approaching Primordial Ferocious Beast Calamity 9.

The calamity later spread from the Southern Continent, making prolonged cultivation in the Eastern Continent unsafe. Eastern bird races and the Covering Sea Clan retreated before the beast tide; Ghost Chariot’s Seventy-Two Fierce Beast alliance offered a means of collective survival 35 39.

Shen Ni is identified as the fierce beasts’ emperor, whose calamity drove the Primordial Three Clans into repeated retreat and nearly destroyed the world. Lin Tian’s Little Beast Emperor is identified as the incarnation of the World-Destroying Millstone, the supreme treasure that should have belonged to Shen Ni 42.

Later Calamities

  • Dragon-Phoenix Calamity — Still in the future during Lin Tian’s early cultivation. His knowledge links it to Hongjun’s battle with Luo Hou and eventual attainment of Heavenly Dao sainthood 2 23.
  • Witch-Demon Calamity, Investiture of the Gods Calamity, and Journey to the West Calamity — Named as later upheavals in the world’s history 48.
  • Chaos Demon God involvement — Their influence persists through successive immeasurable calamities, including those of later ages 48.

Geography

Continental Divisions

Region Documented Characteristics
Eastern Outskirts Lin Tian’s first mainland landing, his meeting with the Little Beast Emperor, and the Golden-Strike Divine Wood’s withered forest all lie here 31.
Eastern Continent Wood-aligned region dominated by immense forests and the Seventy-Two Fierce Beasts 33 39.
Southern Continent The spreading fierce-beast calamity advances from this region 39.
Central Continent Earth-aligned region containing Mount Buzhou; rich in treasures but sparsely populated 39 40.
Western and Northern Regions Named among the five divisions established by Pan Gu’s Grand Formation 39.

Scale and Travel

Route Recorded Travel Time Basis
Eastern Outskirts, east to west Ten million years Earth Book estimate for a Heavenly Immortal 31
Eastern Continent, east to west Thirty million years Earth Book estimate for a Heavenly Immortal 31
Three Immortal Islands to the mainland Tens of thousands of years Lin Tian’s journey using Spatial Traversal 9
  • The Earth Book measures continental distances through estimated travel time rather than ordinary distance units 31.
  • Without landmarks or a reliable direction, travelers can lose their bearings within two days 31.
  • Even spatial movement covering tens of thousands of miles in an instant leaves Lin Tian insignificant against the continent’s extent 12.

Notable Locations

Location Features and Significance
Eastern Sea Separates the Three Immortal Islands from Lin Tian’s mainland landing in the Eastern Outskirts 31.
Penglai Island Protected by an innate formation; contains the Twelfth-Grade World-Purifying White Lotus, Three Lights Divine Water, and twenty-four Sea-Calming Divine Pearls 5 6.
Fangzhang Island Located ten thousand miles from Penglai; home to the Fangcun Dao Tree 7 8.
Yingzhou Island Concealed by an innate formation; contains the Northern Black-Yuan Water-Control Banner and serves as Lin Tian’s cultivation retreat 8 9.
Ginseng Fruit Tree’s Grotto-Heaven A formation-enclosed world with independent laws. The tree’s Earth Book allows it to connect this domain to the mainland 12 14 15.
Innate Ten-Direction Formation A mainland sanctuary spanning tens of millions of miles. Its apparently barren landscape conceals verdant mountains, treasures, and a further illusion formation 24 26 27 28.
Mount Buzhou Formed from Pan Gu’s spine; a heaven-supporting mountain and the core of the Innate Pan Gu Formation 1 39 40.

Eastern Continent Forest

  • Despite being called the Eastern Continent Mountain Range, this area is a plain whose towering trees resemble mountains. Every tree exceeds ten thousand feet in height 33.
  • Its central ancient tree reaches a million feet. Looking directly at it causes backlash in creatures below the Profound Immortal realm 33.
  • The forest is divided into seventy-two regions with different spiritual plants and ancient trees 33.
  • Bird races dominate; the ruling beasts expelled aquatic and land-dwelling races one hundred thousand years before Lin Tian’s visit 33.
  • Local creatures describe the rulers’ monopoly over treasures and blessed grottoes as having begun three million years earlier 31.

Natural Laws and Cultivation

Spiritual Energy

  • In the early world, the air itself consists of abundant heaven-and-earth spiritual qi. Spiritually intelligent beings who know how to cultivate can reach Heavenly Immortal relatively quickly 1 2.
  • Moonlight and dawn’s purple qi provide additional cultivation resources; Lin Tian obtains more evolution points under moonlight and ten points from a captured wisp of purple qi 1.
  • Lin Tian contrasts this abundance with the depleted spiritual energy of the era after Journey to the West 1.
  • Thousands of years can pass during a single cultivation session. Powerful beings at Supreme Unity Golden Immortal or above can generally live as long as heaven and earth 2 9.

Realm Hierarchy

The hierarchy given in the early chapters proceeds in the following order 2:

Order Realm
1 Heavenly Immortal
2 True Immortal
3 Profound Immortal
4 Golden Immortal
5 Great Unity Golden Immortal
6 Great Encompassing Golden Immortal
7 Quasi-Saint
8 Heavenly Dao Saint
9 Dao-Merging Saint
10 Great Dao Saint
  • Cultivation realms are divided into early, middle, late, and peak stages 2.
  • Realms below Heavenly Immortal are described as later subdivisions necessitated by declining spiritual energy 2.
  • Innate foundations can impose a hard cultivation ceiling: Lin Tian’s Primordial Azure Vine body cannot advance beyond peak Golden Immortal without further evolution 9.
  • Crossing from Great Unity to Great Encompassing requires precise control of one’s internal power, not merely powerful origins 42.

Paths to Great Encompassing

Path Requirement
Innate attainment Possess or develop an innate foundation sufficient for the Great Encompassing realm 23 27.
Great Dao merit Earn merit by averting a world-destroying immeasurable calamity 23.
Three-Corpse method A later cultivation route associated with Hongjun’s future teachings in the Purple Heaven Palace 23 27.

Regional Restrictions

  • Pan Gu’s Grand Formation separates the five continental regions while allowing their spiritual energies to circulate 39.
  • A region’s spiritual qi and sun-and-moon essence are normally available only to its own beings. Crossing into another region prevents outsiders from drawing on those resources 39.
  • Lin Tian seeks Eastern Continent bonded treasures to obtain recognition for his bloodline and replenish his energy during travel 33 34.
  • Ordinary beings below Great Encompassing Golden Immortal generally cannot enter the Central Continent through its formation. Lin Tian crosses using Spatial Traversal 39 40.

Formations and Sacred Terrain

Innate Formations

  • Innate formations can hide islands, treasures, and entire grotto-heavens with independent laws 3 5 12.
  • Their defenses vary: Lin Tian slips through an early island formation as a True Immortal, but Penglai’s barrier defeats his newly acquired Void Traversal 3 4 5.
  • Refining a formation can grant control over its protected territory. Lin Tian makes Penglai, Fangzhang, and Yingzhou his possessions by claiming their formations 9.
  • Some formations distort space rather than simply blocking entry. The summit illusion formation within the Ten-Direction domain repeatedly returns Lin Tian to his starting point 28.
  • The novel distinguishes innate things born in chaos before creation from houtian, or acquired, things nurtured after Pan Gu separated heaven and earth 28.

Mount Buzhou’s Pressure

  • Mount Buzhou remains an untouched sacred refuge while fierce beasts and warfare spread elsewhere 30.
  • Its pressure is difficult even for peak Supreme Golden Immortals to withstand 40.
  • Climbing tempers bodies and can strengthen abilities. Ghost Chariot’s ascent compresses its body and progressively opens its sealed mouths 44 46.
  • The Qilin Clan is an obstacle that climbers must pass before ascending the mountain 46.
  • Lin Tian detects a tidal rhythm in the mountain’s pressure and later devours tidal-origin power while his companions refine two formations halfway up 45 46.

Inhabitants and Powers

Being or Group Place in the World
Chaos Demon Gods Pre-creation beings born in chaos. Survivors include the Heaven-and-Earth Demon God; their ambitions include Heavenly Dao sainthood and union with the Heavenly Dao 21.
Post-creation beings Races and creatures nurtured after the world’s formation. Lin Tian considers them potential allies against future calamities 36.
Innate Spiritual Roots Rare plants with origins and divine abilities; some awaken intelligence, as with the Ginseng Fruit Tree associated with the future Zhen Yuanzi 12 15.
Seventy-Two Fierce Beasts Eastern forest rulers allied under Ghost Chariot. Each possesses a bonded spiritual treasure 32 35.
Primordial Three Clans and Twelve Ancestral Witches Rumored inhabitants of the Central Continent 40.
Lin Tian Transmigrated human reborn as a spiritual vine; claims the Three Immortal Islands, reorganizes the eastern beasts, and travels to Mount Buzhou 1 9 36 44.

World-Linked Treasures

  • Earth Book — Classic of Mountains and Seas: Evolved from the primordial earth’s embryonic membrane. Records changes in mountains and rivers and the attributes, appearances, and abilities of plants and animals; releases earth aura that nourishes life 14 15.
  • Books of the Three Powers: The Heaven Book is the Investiture of the Gods List; the Earth Book is the Classic of Mountains and Seas; the Book of Humanity is the Book of Life and Death 14.
  • Pan Gu’s Three Chaos Treasures: The Heaven-Opening Axe, Chaos Green Lotus, and Good Fortune Jade Disc are identified as the sources of most of the world’s supreme treasures 28.
  • Creation Jade Tablet fragments: Lin Tian recalls that Pan Gu’s tablet shattered into fifty pieces. Hongjun’s twenty-four pieces aided his attainment of Heavenly Dao sainthood; the remaining twenty-six are elusive fragments called the “one that escaped” 29.
  • Origin power: Creatures and treasures contain origins that underpin cultivation and abilities. Weak creature origins may need to be combined in great numbers, while treasures such as the Sea-Calming Divine Pearls contain complete origins 3.
  • Karmic consequences: Erasing a destined being’s intelligence or forcibly refining a Chaos Demon God’s divine sense can entangle the perpetrator in far-reaching karma 12 50.
