Retrospective Cultivation Account

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Three Corpses Unification; Primordial Unity 2127 Achieved after hundreds of millions of years of Dao comprehension between his Dragon-Han victory and the Witch–Demon Calamity. This account states that he avoided using Hongmeng purple qi to attain the Dao because of its hidden dangers.

Background / History

Hongjun survived Pan Gu’s Heaven-Opening Divine Axe and entered the newly created Primordial World. He obtained twenty-four fragments of Pan Gu’s Good Fortune Jade Disc, establishing the foundation of his communication with—and manipulation of—the Heavenly Dao 103 242. The fragments were ordained to belong to him, unlike the twenty-six “escaped” fragments that heavenly destiny barred native beings from obtaining 71.

From his dwelling halfway up Mount Kunlun, Hongjun planned to use Shen Ni’s Fierce Beast Calamity to break Pan Gu’s innate formations and sever the Three Thousand Great Daos’ connection to their creator. The intended destruction would weaken Pan Gu’s remaining influence and allow Hongjun to seize greater control of the Heavenly Dao 103 115 358.

His Chaos Demon God origin also impeded his efforts to establish a native Dao lineage. In one account, he concludes that he must remove the traces of his Chaos-era identity before the Daoist School can properly take root 660. Other planes depict him successfully shedding that chaotic state and developing the methods and principles he would transmit through the Daoist School 729.

Hongjun sought the origin of strength for ages without obtaining it. His eventual union with the Dao without that origin is described as a loss to the Primordial World’s potential 71. Much later, Pan Gu’s remaining will confirms Lin Tian’s accusation that Hongjun exploited the Heavenly Dao’s weakened state to appropriate the world and undermine Pan Gu’s legacy 1667.

Appearance

  • Original body: An aged, white-haired Daoist with cloudy eyes; often carries a fresh green bamboo staff 380 660.
  • Complexion: Normally ruddy, but turns ashen when confronted with major disruptions to his plans 241 242.
  • Clothing: Gray Daoist robes in one battlefield appearance; voluminous robes conceal his anxiety before his disciples 814 837.
  • Divine Sense Clone: Black-haired and handsome, appearing roughly a third younger than his white-haired original body 381.
  • Demonic puppet form: Blood-red eyes, thick demonic qi, and an Azure Demonic Staff replace his customary appearance after Luo Hou refines him into a species form 720.

Personality

Hongjun is patient, guarded, and accustomed to controlling events from a safe distance. He avoids becoming personally entangled in calamities while using their consequences to expand his authority 242. Even after merging with the Dao, he is willing to wait dozens of primordial cycles to complete his refinement of the Heavenly Dao 2180.

He treats destined fortune, disciples, and opportunities as possessions that ought to belong to him. Lin Tian’s success provokes resentment over lost disciples, merit, and treasures; Hongjun nevertheless restrains his greed when he recognizes that direct confrontation would be unwise 589 600 1013.

His reputation for righteousness contrasts sharply with his willingness to sacrifice others. He secretly pushes Yuanshi into Luo Hou’s killing blow, then invokes the Daoist School’s Great Dao and the welfare of living beings to justify the act 712. When necessary, he abandons pride and seeks cooperation with enemies he once despised 381 414.

Hongjun is not uniformly hostile across every account. He can engage earnestly in Dao discussion, care for Houtu during enlightenment, and spare his attendants unnecessary reprimands 484. When higher-realm beings threaten to consume him and his lineage, he warns Lin Tian and ultimately accepts his leadership 1076 1077.

Abilities & Skills

Heavenly Dao Authority

Hongjun draws power from the Primordial World’s rules and order, making his authority far greater than that of ordinary Heavenly Dao Saints 1259.

  • Imposes world-spanning Saintly pressure and enforces the division of Demon and Witch territories 490 501.
  • Uses Heavenly Dao rules to forcibly restore or elevate the combat condition of allied Saints 1257.
  • Gains a decisive home-ground advantage against powerful visitors from other worlds 2110.
  • Remains vulnerable to the loss of his connection: when Lin Tian takes over the world’s laws, the Three Thousand Laws reject him and his power begins draining away 1023.
  • His union can threaten his independence or make his life inseparable from the world’s survival 509 573.

Deduction, Time, and Fate

The Creation Jade Tablet fragments allow Hongjun to divine history, alter flaws in his plans, and influence events across past, present, and future 115 333.

  • Intervenes from the future through the River of Time to defend his Dao Fruit 358.
  • Projects historical fragments directly into others’ consciousness, including evidence of Jidu’s military movements 444.
  • Uses Finger-Counting Divination to identify the visitors occupying his destined meditation cushions 2113.
  • Losing the fragment containing the Great Deduction Technique deprives him of access to future historical developments 381.
  • His predictions can fail when opponents choose an unexpected course 713.

Three Corpses and Clones

Hongjun uses external manifestations both in combat and to protect his original self 381 918 1024.

  • Sends a Divine Sense Clone to negotiate with Luo Hou rather than expose Haotian to danger 381.
  • Reunites with his Three Corpses before descending in his true body to attack Pan Gu Hall 918.
  • Creates an empty Three-Corpses clone, severs its connection, and hides his original self elsewhere in Purple Heaven Palace 1024.
  • True Three Corpses Unification requires merging three similarly rooted Great Daos into one complete law; Hongjun’s own attainment required immense time and comprehension 2127.

Purple Firmament Divine Thunder and Barrier

Hongjun’s signature thunder attacks are paired with a direct defensive technique 509.

  • Purple Firmament Divine Thunder: Opens his battle with Houtu through a barrage of lightning 509.
  • Purple Firmament Divine Barrier: Forms a spherical shield that dissipates Houtu’s incoming sword rays 509.
  • Also attacks Pan Gu Hall with purple divine thunder when its absorption of world laws threatens his authority 918.

Wheel of the Heavenly Dao

His strongest stated technique after merging with the Heavenly Dao manifests as a silver, semicircular wheel composed of laws and their ultimate truths 511.

  • Its presence slows movement as though freezing time and space.
  • Crushes and annihilates the time and space along its path.
  • Palace formations amplify its power, but Houtu’s full-strength Creation Sword strike cancels it out 511.

Formation Mastery

Hongjun builds layered defenses and killing formations around his cultivation grounds 511 1260.

  • Purple Heaven Palace’s formations enhance his power and launch attacks stronger than his unassisted full-strength assault 511.
  • Uses Good Fortune Jade Disc fragments to create a Heaven-Deceiving Formation, concealing himself and his Dragon–Phoenix allies 642.
  • Condenses his accumulated Dao insights into vast numbers of Creation Killing Formation Diagrams 1260.
  • His formations are not absolute: Houtu cuts through his palace defenses, and Lin Tian’s manifested Pan Gu Axe breaks his supreme forbidden formation 511 1262.

Dao Teaching and Spiritual Awakening

Hongjun transmits cultivation methods, including the Three Thousand Great Daos and Corpse-Slaying through spiritual treasures and roots 503 729.

  • His final sermon concerns the Dao of Saints; listeners who merely memorize it without understanding forget it after leaving the palace 503.
  • A private discourse uses an earthworm’s reincarnation and cultivation to illustrate the Great Dao; Houtu gains substantial insight from the exchange 484.
  • Awakens Haotian and Yaochi from a stone and a leaf, respectively 483.
  • Later transforms their childlike appearances into adult forms 908.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Good Fortune Jade Disc / Creation Jade Disc / Creation Jade Tablet fragments — His principal tools for Dao comprehension, deduction, Heavenly Dao control, and formation construction. One account begins with twenty-four fragments; another gives him three particularly important fragments 103 693 1260.
  • Hongmeng Purple Qi — Connected to Heavenly Dao Saint positions and used as a potential defense. Recorded holdings differ by account: eight strands, ten strands, or nine strands 485 573 693 713.
  • Green Bamboo Staff — His customary carried item; its demonic counterpart is the Azure Demonic Staff 381 720.
  • Purple Heaven Palace / Zixiao Palace — Cultivation residence, preaching venue, and formation-enhanced battlefield 482 490 511.
  • Four Zhuxian Swords — Used to carve a stabilized space out of Chaos and attack Lin Tian; Lin Tian absorbs them during their spar 482.
  • Treasure-Splitting Rock — Supreme-grade Innate Spiritual Treasure used to stabilize his new cultivation grounds. Lin Tian absorbs it and severs Hongjun’s connection 482.
  • Collection of over a thousand Innate Spiritual Treasures — Deployed simultaneously after his initial attacks fail; most are low- or mid-grade 483.
  • Five-Needle Pine — Spiritual root offered during the exchange that precedes his Dao discussion with Lin Tian 484.
  • Pangu Banner — Supreme treasure wielded against Lin Tian in their duel beyond the Thirty-Three Heavens 566.
  • All-Heavens Celebratory Cloud — Former supreme defensive treasure formed from Pan Gu’s righteous aura; bestowed upon Yuanshi during Hongjun’s third sermon 1194.
  • Chaos World-Destroying Great Millstone — Hidden destructive weapon used to stop Lin Tian’s attempt to attain the Dao, endangering the world beneath their battle 1262 1263.
  • Chaos Pearl — simulation account — Used to protect cultivators and contain the restored Primordial World in the alliance’s rehearsal game; this does not establish possession by every Hongjun 2100.

Relationships

  • Lin Tian / Vine Dao Venerable — Principal rival over world authority, fortune, and Dao lineage. Their relationship ranges from respectful discourse and negotiated assistance to repeated lethal confrontations across planes; one Hongjun ultimately accepts Lin Tian as his superior 484 573 1025 1077.
  • Heavenly Dao — Source of power, object of manipulation, and potential captor. Hongjun eventually attempts to devour it rather than remain its spokesperson 1257 1283.
  • Pan Gu — Hongjun survives his World-Opening attack and appropriates fragments of his treasure. Pan Gu’s remaining will later identifies Hongjun as an exploiter of the weakened world order 242 1667.
  • Luo Hou — Fundamental enemy and rival for the Heavenly Dao and supremacy of lineage. Hongjun accepts temporary cooperation when threatened by Lin Tian; in another plane, Luo Hou—acting through Lin Tian—refines him into a puppet 414 693 720.
  • Yang Mei — An ancient figure Hongjun fears and considers as a potential ally. Yang Mei’s space-origin Great Dao also allows him to escape Hongjun’s attempts to deal with him 115 1252.
  • Laozi — One of the Three Pure Ones accepted as an inner disciple in some planes. In another account, he chooses Lin Tian’s teachings instead; later participates in resistance to Hongjun 556 692 2079 2110.
  • Yuanshi — Loyal disciple whom Hongjun attempts to protect during disputes with Lin Tian, but also uses as a shield against Luo Hou. A later version abandons Hongjun’s expected tutelage for the Little Beast Emperor 599 712 748.
  • Tongtian — Disciple and karmically entangled figure whose allegiance varies by plane. Later becomes a bitter, imprisoned opponent and a major supporter of the Anti-Hongjun Alliance 662 2079 2081.
  • Haotian and Yaochi — Attendants whom he awakens, instructs, and later appoints to the restored Heavenly Court. They eventually reject his control in the time-travel campaign 483 622 2112.
  • Houtu — Dao-discussion beneficiary entrusted temporarily to his care, later a Heavenly Dao Realm opponent. In another account, Hongjun tries to lure her out of the Ancestral Witches’ formation through Earthly Dao treasures 484 509 2235.
  • Ancestral Dragon and Shi Feng — Military allies recruited for campaigns against the Devil Race. Their cooperation is pragmatic: Ancestral Dragon initially refuses, while Shi Feng persuades him to join 444 641 642.
  • Primordial Wild Dragon — Upper Realm patron who helps rebuild the Daoist School, then exercises control over Hongjun’s teaching and threatens his autonomy 729 733 734 1283.
  • Jieyin and Zhunti — Disciples and instruments of his Daoist influence; become the rebuilt school’s first and second inner disciples in one plane. Later cooperate with the forces opposing him 734 2081 2105.
  • Twelve Ancestral Witches — Initially rejected as prospective disciples in one account. Elsewhere, Hongjun saves them through bargaining and brings them to Kunlun as a counterweight to Lin Tian 692 849.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Disruption of the Planned Calamities

  • The prolonged heavenly tribulations and stalled Fierce Beast advance undermine Hongjun’s intended destruction of the world. Suspecting another holder of Creation Jade Tablet fragments, he leaves Kunlun to seek Luo Hou’s aid 115.
  • A future manifestation intervenes when Lin Tian reaches for a deduction fragment in the River of Time. Green Duckweed Sword light erases Hongjun and Haotian’s manifestations and strikes the future Zixiao Palace 358.
  • Losing the Great Deduction Technique forces him to negotiate with Luo Hou under conditions he finds intolerable but necessary 381 414.

Sainthood, Sermons, and the Two-World War

  • A spar at Mount Jade Capital ends with Lin Tian absorbing Hongjun’s treasures. Their subsequent exchange shifts from competitive boasting to productive Dao discussion 482 483 484.
  • Hongjun announces his sainthood and invites destined listeners to Purple Heaven Palace. By the final sermon, nearly every guest except Houtu has adopted his treasure-based Corpse-Slaying path 490 503.
  • During the Spacetime Realm invasion, he recognizes that defeat would mean his own death. He fights Houtu, whose concealed perfected Heavenly Dao Realm strength overturns his expectations 509 511.

Rivalry for Disciples and Fortune

  • Lin Tian’s sword display draws cultivators away from Zixiao Palace. Laozi and Tongtian choose Lin Tian, leaving Yuanshi as the only Pure One committed to Hongjun in this account 556.
  • Hongjun loses a duel in Chaos and is unsettled by Lin Tian’s knowledge that union with the Dao could erase his identity. He later seeks Lin Tian’s help, prompting a demand for five strands of Hongmeng purple qi 567 573.
  • After failing to protect Yuanshi’s position in a treasure dispute, he compensates Lin Tian’s disciple with cultivation resources. Lin Tian also preempts his opportunity to gain merit by stabilizing the collapsing Primordial World 599 600 615.
  • Hongjun restores the former Demon Celestial Court and appoints Haotian and Yaochi as Jade Emperor and Queen Mother 622.

Daoist School Campaigns and Western Reconstruction

  • Hongjun recruits Dragon and Phoenix armies against Luo Hou, hoping military victory will secure his lineage and future position as First Saint 642 661 662.
  • In a separate Daoist School account, his reputation rests on blocking the Devil Race’s eastward advance. Luo Hou’s return destabilizes both his confidence and his attendants’ existence 692 693.
  • Lin Tian, acting as Luo Hou, overwhelms the school and ultimately refines Hongjun into a demonic species form 712 713 715 720.
  • Another Hongjun rebuilds on Mount Sumeru with the Primordial Wild Dragon’s support. He rejects the proposal to preach from beyond the Thirty-Three Heavens, accepting this plane’s unusual fate while still intending to reclaim Kunlun 733 734 749.

Repeated Confrontations Across Planes

  • Xing Tian uses Hongjun’s intervention as a route to his original self. His still-beating heart strips Hongjun’s powers, reduces him to a skeleton, and drives the world toward dissolution into Chaos 793.
  • After Lin Tian unifies another plane, Hongjun confines the Three Pure Ones to Kunlun. He then pays Lin Tian’s demanded price to save the Twelve Ancestral Witches and brings them into the same refuge 848 849.
  • Lin Tian’s absorption of world laws through Pan Gu Hall provokes Hongjun to reunite with his Three Corpses and attack. Hongjun experiences disturbing recognition of other versions apparently killed by the same adversary 918.
  • A later confrontation exposes Lin Tian’s covert takeover of the Heavenly Dao. Hongjun’s Three-Corpses decoy fails when the Fate Cage drags his hidden original self into the open 1023 1024.

Resistance to the Upper Realm

  • Near destruction, Hongjun summons Lin Tian and warns that Upper Realm Chaos Demon Gods enforce the destined Journey to the West and Buddhism’s eastward spread 1075 1076.
  • He admits that they have made him a puppet and intend to consume his lineage, the Heavenly Dao, and the world. Lin Tian sustains him, and Hongjun accepts an alliance under Lin Tian’s leadership 1077.
  • In another confrontation, Hongjun’s millstone fails against Lin Tian’s Pan Gu Chaos Body. Lin Tian cleaves him in half, but the Heavenly Dao intervenes before the finishing blow 1262 1263.
  • After recovering some cultivation, Hongjun traps the Heavenly Dao within an independent world using the Creation Jade Tablet’s Three Thousand Great Dao manifestations. His intended goal is to devour its rule order and pursue the Great Dao Saint realm; completion is not shown 1283.

Journey to the West and the Anti-Hongjun Alliance

  • Hongjun discovers missing world origin and extensive deviations in the Journey to the West. His assembled followers evade responsibility, leaving him confronted with the limits of his oversight 2076.
  • He sends Nuwa to investigate Hongmeng while secretly observing through a consciousness trace. Lin Tian’s newly assembled Anti-Hongjun Alliance stages the encounter for him 2079 2081.
  • A simulation demonstrates the danger of direct combat: a Heavenly Dao-merged Hongjun defeats six attackers, survives their self-detonation, restores the world, and erases Nuwa’s memory 2100.
  • After Tongtian’s release, Hongjun threatens the Saints’ positions and waits in the River of Time. The opposing factions unite and travel back to undermine his sermons rather than rely solely on frontal attack 2105 2107 2108 2110 2111.
  • The future Heavenly Dao Hongjun kills the earlier palace-host Hongjun, destroying his Jade Disc and breaking the alliance’s plan. Lin Tian explains that union with the Dao has made the two distinct people 2113 2114.

Witch Dominance and the Houtu Trap

  • The Witch Clan’s victory, purification of earthly killing intent, and restoration of western earth veins strengthen the Heavenly Dao instead of weakening it. Hongjun summons his remaining four Saints to address the collapse of his planned course 2180.
  • Unable to easily harm merit-protected Lin Tian, he turns to manipulation. Earthly Dao treasures tempt Houtu toward becoming Earthly Dao Reincarnation; her departure would prevent the remaining Witches from summoning the Pan Gu phantom 2235.
