Ch. 1981A scheme that only betrayed what it tried to hide
Plot and events
- Tang Sanzang’s party finds an old woman tumbling through the snow. Zhu Bajie rescues her and uses magic to ease her broken leg, while Tang shows concern.
- The woman says her seven granddaughters went out to sell matches and never returned after a blizzard. The monks recognize her as the match girls’ grandmother.
- Zhu Bajie, suspecting she is a disguised monster, pretends the girls may still be in a ruined temple. He offers to escort the woman there and then take her home, intending to kill her along the way.
- Tang agrees, though troubled. Bajie and Sandy coordinate to keep him in the dark, and Sandy continues west with Tang.
- Once they are alone, Tang asks Sandy whether Bajie will kill the woman. Sandy realizes Tang has understood the plan all along. The livestreaming monsters discuss Tang’s apparent double standard: he condemned Wukong for killing the weak but does not stop Bajie.
Character developments and interactions
- Zhu Bajie is both compassionate in appearance and calculating beneath it: he treats the woman’s injury, then conceals his suspicion and arranges to deal with her privately.
- Tang Sanzang shows genuine pity for the injured woman and concern for her granddaughters, but also reveals that he is more perceptive than his disciples assume. His silence leaves his moral position ambiguous.
- Sandy helps Bajie maintain the deception, yet is startled when Tang exposes that he sees through it.
- Wukong mocks Tang’s unequal treatment of Bajie and himself, insisting he will judge Tang by whether he applies the same standards to both.
Themes
- Appearance and deception: Bajie’s helpful conduct masks his intent, while the party’s “ignorance” is partly an act.
- Moral inconsistency and justice: Wukong questions why Tang tolerated Bajie’s planned violence after condemning Wukong for similar actions.
- Compassion versus suspicion: The woman’s suffering prompts care, but the disciples’ belief that she is a monster turns that care into a calculated prelude to violence.
