In a canyon, many great demons of the Demon Race gathered together. Bai Ze, a refined-looking great demon dressed in white, let out a long sigh.
"I imagine you have all heard what has been spreading through the Primordial World lately. Now that the Twelve Ancestral Witches and the Three Pure Ones have made enemies of each other, a battle between them is inevitable. This interval, however, offers our Demon Race a rare chance to catch its breath."
"It is time we settled certain matters."
A host of dragons without a head, a heap of loose sand-that was the Demon Race in its current state. Had the Twelve Ancestral Witches not taken leave of their senses and picked a feud with the Three Pure Ones, the entire Demon Race's situation would only have grown more dire.
"Whatever views you have, speak up so we can discuss them!"
Fuxi also spoke at that moment.
Though Fuxi did not rank in the very highest tier among the Primordial World's supreme powers, he was nevertheless one of the foremost figures among the great demons present.
Moreover, he excelled at divination and strategy, so very few great demons were willing to offend him.
Thus, when he spoke, every great demon present grew solemn.
"If you ask me, we should seize this chance to charge straight in and slaughter them until not a scrap of armor remains!"
"With the Three Pure Ones standing in their way, I refuse to believe the Twelve Ancestral Witches would still dare launch an all-out attack on our Demon Race!"
The great demon Ghost Chariot slapped the table, a vicious gleam flashing through his eyes.
"Exactly! The Witch Clan and the Demon Race have long been as incompatible as fire and water. If we don't seize this chance to kill more witches, our Demon Race will be in an even worse state once the Twelve Ancestral Witches finish off the Three Pure Ones."
The great demon Jiuying hastily voiced his agreement.
The two great demons, Ghost Chariot and Jiuying, were not entirely without reason. The chief dispute between the Witch Clan and the Demon Race was over food.
The witches were all enormous eaters, and with no natural predators, their population kept growing. Ordinary beasts had long ceased to satisfy their hunger, so naturally, they had turned their eyes toward the Demon Race.
Not only were demons huge, but they also possessed cultivation, making their flesh far more delicious than that of ordinary beasts.
Naturally, those gluttons of the Witch Clan were unwilling to give them up.
This opportunity was perfect for killing some witches and easing the pressure on the Demon Race!
"You two fellow Daoists are right. I also believe this is an opportunity our Demon Race might not encounter in a thousand years."
"I am willing to join you!"
"I am willing to join you too!"
Sure enough, shortly after Jiuying and Ghost Chariot finished speaking, quite a few great demons declared their support.
"Fools! Fools!"
Seeing every great demon present worked into a frenzy, seemingly determined to fight the Witch Clan to the death, Bai Ze's lips trembled with anger. He slapped the table, rose, and demanded answers.
"What will you accomplish after venting your anger?"
"What will you accomplish by wiping out a few Witch Clan tribes?"
"Even if you wipe out every single Witch Clan tribe, what will that accomplish?"
His barrage of questions left every great demon seated there speechless.
Indeed!
What would killing them accomplish?
As long as the Pangu Hall remained, new witches could continue to be born without end.
When the Twelve Ancestral Witches emerged from seclusion and saw the Witch Clan's terrible casualties, wouldn't they hunt demons across the entire world?
Then it would no longer be merely a dispute over territory and food.
It would be a war of extermination!
Who could stand against the Twelve Ancestral Witches?
No one!
Not even Fuxi!
Ultimately, the Demon Race still lacked a leader capable of contending with the Twelve Ancestral Witches!
"Well..."
At that thought, all the great demons seated there fell silent.
It was not as though they had never considered ambushing and killing the Twelve Ancestral Witches.
In the early days of the Witch Clan's rise, some great demons had indeed tried it.
They had assembled several hundred demons, including more than a dozen great demons, intending to surround and kill Zhurong.
And what had happened? The Ancestral Witch Zhurong had killed more than half with a single slap. Of the dozen or so great demons, some died and the rest fled.
Most had become food for the Witch Clan.
From then on, no great demon had ever again considered ambushing an Ancestral Witch.
They were simply no match!
"We acted rashly. Please forgive us, fellow Daoist Bai Ze."
At those words, the great demons present broke into cold sweats.
Any great demon who had survived until now had brains. Those without brains had long since been eaten by the Witch Clan-how could they possibly still be hopping about today?
Fortunately, they had not acted recklessly. Otherwise, they truly would have been finished.
"What if we ask the Demon Master to come out of seclusion?"
Just then, the great demon Yingzhao spoke.
As a woman, she was far more thoughtful than most great demons and took a longer view. Although her words displeased the great demons present, none directly objected.
"I think the Demon Master Kunpeng would be a good candidate. He holds the Northern Dark Sea and commands ten billion demons. Even the Ancestral Witch Xuanming is unwilling to provoke him."
Yingzhao's words made Ghost Chariot's eyes light up, and he immediately agreed.
"No, no. Though Kunpeng is the Demon Master and earned great merit for our Demon Race by inventing demon script, he is too narrow-minded to shoulder such a responsibility!"
As soon as those words were spoken, a great demon rejected the suggestion outright.
Though Kunpeng was certainly a notable figure among the great demons, he forgot loyalty at the sight of profit and was terrified of death. Never mind standing against the Twelve Ancestral Witches-even his leadership of the demons met with considerable resistance!
"This won't work, that won't work-then give us an answer!"
Ghost Chariot glared and snapped angrily.
Fuxi would not do!
Kunpeng would not do either!
Were they supposed to just wait for death?
Wait for the Witch Clan to slowly nibble them away?
Once the Twelve Ancestral Witches finished dealing with the Three Pure Ones, they would surely turn their weapons on the Demon Race. Would anything good await the Demon Race then?
"Great Fuxi, what about your younger sister, Nüwa?"
After a long while, Bai Ze slowly posed the question.
Though Nüwa was not as powerful as the Twelve Ancestral Witches, she was the Dao Ancestor's disciple!
A disciple of a Sage!
As long as Nüwa stepped forward, every great demon would accept her authority. Even Kunpeng would not dare utter a peep.
Most importantly, with Nüwa in charge of the Demon Race, she might struggle to lead the entire race against the Witch Clan.
But she could still preserve a remnant of their bloodline and prevent their extermination!
This was also the only solution Bai Ze, the Demon Race's makeshift strategist, could currently devise.
"If you could think of it, fellow Daoist Bai Ze, how could I fail to see it? But my sister's thoughts are devoted entirely to attaining primordial unity. She is unwilling to become entangled in the Demon Race's affairs. Otherwise, why would this have dragged on so long?"
Hearing Bai Ze mention Nüwa, Fuxi shook his head with a bitter smile.
It was not as though he had never raised the matter with Nüwa. She had rejected him before he could even finish speaking.
What could he do?
Surely he could not force Nüwa!
"Alas..."
For a time, the many great demons seated there fell silent once again.
They had considered every possibility, yet there truly was no suitable candidate!
"However, I do have someone in mind. If he agrees to step forward and lead the demons, our Demon Race would have nothing to fear-not merely from the Twelve Ancestral Witches, but even with the Three Pure Ones added to their ranks!"
After a long while, seeing the worried faces of the great demons seated there, Fuxi felt the timing was about right. Only then did he slowly speak.
"Who?"
At those words, all the great demons present jolted and looked at Fuxi in bewilderment.
They truly could not imagine whom Fuxi meant!
"Daochen!"
