Nature of Sagehood

Cultivation Realm and Sage Position

  • Saint Realm cultivation describes a being’s level of power. It does not necessarily mean that the being holds a Heavenly Dao Sage position 272 918.
  • A Sage position connects its holder to a particular governing system. The Human Path can grant positions independently of the Heavenly Dao, while Luo Hou can appoint Sages within his own realm 895 907 917.
  • The Six Destined Saints are Laozi, Yuanshi, Tongtian, Nüwa, Jieyin, and Zhunti. Hongjun distributes Primordial Purple Qi to these six as opportunities for future attainment 62 311.
  • “Ghost Sage” is not equivalent to Saint Realm cultivation. The leading Ghost Sages are early Quasi-Saints, with some able to rival mid-stage Quasi-Saints 561 565.
  • “True Sage” can also express moral approval. Fuxi earns that description through his willingness to save innocent lives rather than pursue benefits for himself 1109.

Major Forms

Form Defining Feature Benefit or Limitation
Heavenly Dao Sage Places a Primordial Spirit imprint in the Heavenly Dao’s origin 272. Can revive after bodily destruction, but attachment to the Heavenly Dao severely restricts freedom and further advancement 272 628.
Independent Primordial Unity expert Attains Saint Realm power without entrusting the Primordial Spirit to the Heavenly Dao 250 272. Has greater potential to advance beyond the nine heavens, but death is final without the Heavenly Dao’s revival mechanism 272.
Human Path Sage Holds a position under the independent Human Path 907 917 918. Gains support and law insight from the position; Fuxi argues that such experts are not Heavenly Dao Sages subject to Hongjun’s authority 917 918.
Demon Realm Sage Receives an appointment from Luo Hou within his comparatively low-tier realm 895. Its incomplete laws allow instant promotion, but the resulting status is closer to Pseudo-Sagehood 895.

Attaining Sagehood

Early Established Methods

At the time of Daochen’s initial Quasi-Saint breakthrough, he identifies three viable methods in the Primordial World. He considers unrestricted pursuit of the Three Thousand Great Daos no longer practicable because the completed world laws would bring lethal heavenly tribulation 60.

Method Requirements and Examples
Merit Nüwa ascends through creating humanity. Sect establishment also produces merit, although Laozi must supplement his sect’s reward with Heaven-Opening Merit 237 271 272 274.
Severing the Three Corpses Involves the Good, Evil, and Self Corpses, followed by their reunion and merger with the original body. Hongjun attains Sagehood through corpse severing 3 482.
Physical Sanctification Requires bringing the ninth revolution of the Nine Revolutions Mystic Art to perfection. Full comprehension of the Law of Strength is essential 59 60.

These methods can overlap: Nüwa’s merit also enables corpse severing and reunion, while sect-founding merit helps the Western pair unite their Three Corpses 237 278.

Primordial Purple Qi and Limited Positions

  • Hongjun gives the Six Destined Saints Primordial Purple Qi as the opportunity to attain Sagehood. Daochen refuses to kneel for the remaining opportunity 62.
  • Early Sage positions are scarce enough that, once the Heavenly Dao’s ranks are complete, merit alone can no longer elevate the many trapped Quasi-Saints 503.
  • Daochen’s own purple qi is unusual: it fuses Hongjun’s bestowed strand with another obtained through the system. He regards his impending attainment as dangerous because of this anomaly 242.
  • The restriction is not permanent. The Heavenly Dao later lifts suppression and offers new Sage positions to outstanding defenders of the Primordial World 986.

Later and Alternative Routes

  • Dao Elixirs: Daochen hunts Sages in the Beyond Lands to obtain the means of elevating Dijun and Taiyi. The elixir transforms the body but cannot supply the recipient’s personal understanding of laws 616 617.
  • Human Path positions: Fuxi’s method grants a Sage position first, then uses it to guide cultivation toward Sagehood. Advancement is easier, but the shortcut can leave a weaker foundation 917.
  • Contributions to the Human Path: Attainment is not presented as exclusive to humans; Spirit Mountain hopes to earn Sagehood by making substantial contributions to it 943.
  • Realm appointment: Luo Hou uses Sagehood to recruit capable followers. Joining his Devil Race entails a permanent racial transformation 895.

Abilities & Skills

Sage Power

Sage Power develops as spiritual power compresses and changes in nature. Sufficient accumulation is necessary to cross from Quasi-Saint into Sagehood 815.

  • Cultivation: Spiritual energy can be absorbed and converted into Sage Power, though the process becomes extremely slow at higher stages 760.
  • Power tempering: Refining its quality is essential; merely raising one’s realm leaves an inadequate foundation for further breakthroughs 815.
  • Empowering others: Daochen gives Bai Ze a Sage Power mark that clears his mind and brings him close to a breakthrough 589.
  • Refinement: Daochen tempers Golden-Winged Roc’s wings into a Top-Grade Acquired Spirit Treasure 499.
  • Purification and healing: Jin Chanzi’s distributed power disperses Demonic Qi, while Shennong’s power heals wounds and removes old scars 679 918.
  • Limits: Uncontrolled absorption can be dangerous to beings below the Saint Realm. Daochen’s Phantom Worms can convert chaos into Sage Power, but each worm has limited processing capacity 1035 1036.

Personal Laws

A Sage must comprehend laws and principles suited to their own nature; crossing the threshold alone does not grant mastery 616 617.

Sage Documented Specialization
Daochen Strength: overwhelming force can overcome elaborate techniques 617.
Dijun Golden Crow Fire capable of burning through surrounding space 617.
Eastern Emperor Taiyi Bone-based power, including extracting bones to wield as weapons 617.
Xuanyuan Warfare, martial intent, deception, and concealment of Sage-level strength 917.
Shennong Gentle healing power directed toward sickness, injury, and suffering 918.

Pressure and Combat Authority

  • Yuanshi’s released Sage pressure forces Xingtian, Jiufeng, Kuafu, and other Witches flat against the ground; weaker members suffer internal injury 286.
  • Sagehood greatly increases the effectiveness of treasures, as shown by Laozi’s newly empowered Taiji Diagram and protective tower 272.
  • Equal status does not mean equal strength. Realm differences, rare opportunities, and powerful treasures all affect battles between Sages 272 277 481.
  • Sages are not invulnerable to lower-ranked opponents: the Twelve Ancestral Witches shatter Yuanshi’s Sage body through their combined strength 311.

Perception, Divination, and Karma

  • Sages can sense danger and investigate its cause through divination 562.
  • They can examine their karmic connections and calculate likely consequences, ordinarily avoiding entanglement 741.
  • Deliberate discussion of a Sage can attract their notice, but casual mentions do not normally reveal the speaker or exact conversation 809.
  • Their perception can be blocked. Shentu conceals a space from Sages, and concealed intervention prevents Jieyin from tracing the Ghost Sages’ escape 564 565.
  • Sagehood does not eliminate karmic consequences. Jieyin warns Zhunti that killing may still bring future tribulations 564.

Revival and Its Limits

  • A Heavenly Dao Sage can revive through the Primordial Spirit imprint anchored in the Heavenly Dao’s origin 272 725.
  • Destruction can still remove a Sage from action for an unknown period, leaving their sect and interests exposed 311.
  • Independent Primordial Unity experts lack this automatic revival: their deaths are genuine deaths 272.
  • The Heavenly Dao can threaten a Sage’s position and immortality, although the Sages later reject its claim that their earned positions can be revoked arbitrarily 628 909.

Cultivation Beyond the Threshold

Merit, Fortune, and Faith

  • Laozi’s progress depends on Human Sect fortune and heavenly merit after he spends his Heaven-Opening Merit 272.
  • The Western Sages owe borrowed merit, making sect growth and repayment urgent concerns 278 348.
  • Buddhist faith can become merit that supports advancement, as demonstrated by Jieyin’s Second Tier breakthrough 636.
  • Sage positions can enhance insight without instantly providing a stable foundation. Fuxi’s rapid rise to the Fourth Heaven leaves his understanding behind his power 907.
  • Powerful organizations matter: the Demon Race’s widespread membership gathers resources on a scale that individual Sages cannot match 362.

The Nine Heavens Barrier

  • Advancement requires both enough refined power and an opportunity—a weak point in the realm barrier that the cultivator can force open 815.
  • At the Ninth Heaven, Sage Power must be tempered as far as the individual can manage before attempting the Heavenly Dao Realm. There is no universal fixed measure of sufficient refinement 815.
  • Tribulation lightning is destructive but also tempers the body. Daochen advises Saint-level cultivators to delay breakthroughs until outside his realm and endure the lightning physically rather than rely on external protection 1070.

History and World Role

Establishment of the Sage Order

Hongjun’s attainment and Purple Heavens Palace lectures establish Sagehood as the central ambition of the Primordial World’s great cultivators. Daochen initially fears that Dijun and Taiyi’s inability to obtain destined Sage seats will drive them to seek fortune through the War of the Liches. He instead helps them secure meditation cushions and become Hongjun’s registered disciples, changing their original prospects without guaranteeing attainment 1 10.

Nüwa’s creation of humanity produces the first new Sage breakthrough since Hongjun and Yangmei. Daochen follows through his independent route, and the Three Pure Ones’ sect-founding ascensions mark the beginning of the age of Sages 237 250 274.

Competition for Humanity

Sage-led sects compete for followers, fortune, and merit. Humanity becomes especially valuable because its fortune is divided between Nüwa and Daochen, while its rise offers teaching and religious opportunities to the other Sages 271 278 328.

Hongjun channels that rivalry into disciples’ participation in the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors era. Teaching appointments become bargaining assets, allocated through alliances and intimidation rather than equal division 474 479 482. Restrictions on direct Sage interference also encourage proxy conflicts through disciples 628 639.

Independent Sagehood and Shifting Loyalties

The Human Path ends the Heavenly Dao’s monopoly over Sage positions. Fuxi establishes it through humanity’s collective convictions, then helps Xuanyuan and Shennong become specialist Sages. Its protection prevents Hongjun from imposing Heavenly Punishment on their ascensions 907 917 918.

Sage status nevertheless does not guarantee freedom. Fate controls several Sages and exploits their desire to establish realms of their own 903 913. Conversely, the Sages defy the Heavenly Dao’s threats to protect Daochen during a dangerous breakthrough, demonstrating that their loyalties can outweigh fear of losing their positions 909.

Expansion Beyond the Early Elite

Collective breakthroughs and the lifting of Heavenly Dao suppression broaden access to the Saint Realm 970 986. Daochen’s instruction and shared resources further accelerate advancement; by the ninth year of preparations for the Gate World War, Saint Realm experts exceed one hundred thousand, while all two thousand selected trainees have reached the higher Heavenly Dao Realm 1070 1469.
