Background / History
The Wu Household began with an exceptionally gifted blacksmith. Five hundred years earlier, the leader of the Heavenly Dragon Way recognized his aptitude and accepted him as a disciple. After several years of cultivation, he became one of the world’s few Ninth-Rank experts and established the household’s foundations 19.
The founder passed down the Nine-Dragon Divine Fire Art and devised the Eighty-One-Form Chaotic Wind Hammer Method through an Enlightenment experienced while working metal. He also developed a method of using fire-element internal energy to remove impurities from artifacts, establishing the technical foundation of the household’s reputation 19 31.
Over the following centuries, the clan expanded its business while maintaining the Heavenly Dragon Way’s protection. It offers a considerable portion of its earnings to the sect and regularly sends outstanding younger members to become its disciples. The sect provides backing rather than intervening in every dispute, so the household also maintains its own martial strength 19.
Organization and Recruitment
Leadership and Membership
| Position or Group | Function and Access |
|---|---|
| Household head | Always bears the surname Wu. In each generation, one direct heir receives the complete Nine-Dragon Divine Fire Art and becomes head 28 34. |
| Elders | Include powerful experts with other surnames. Fourth-Rank cultivation is the basic qualification for elder status 28. |
| Inner disciples | Selected for advanced instruction; even core inner disciples do not receive the complete Nine-Dragon Divine Fire Art 22 34. |
| Master craftsmen / elite disciples | Learn introductory cultivation and the first nine hammer forms. Those unable to advance further as disciples become a skilled backbone of the ironworking business 19. |
| Instructors | Retired craftsmen teach apprentices and identify promising recruits; elite disciples also receive instruction in martial principles 19 22. |
| Ordinary apprentices | Initially learn conventional smelting. Exceptional aptitude can earn a recommendation to a larger ironworks and access to advanced training 17. |
| Branch stewards | Manage commercial affairs. At Green Ram Market, the steward oversees sales but has no authority over rear-workshop instruction 20 22. |
Selection Assembly
- Apprentices receive three opportunities to participate in the Selection Assembly 20.
- Selection proceeds through multiple rounds: Old Xing did not pass the second round and therefore never became an inner disciple 22.
- Old Xing and Qin Xuanlong both plan for Zhou Bao to enter at age ten; the supplied events do not show him taking the examination 19 24 28.
- An outstanding candidate may attract an elder’s attention and become a personal disciple, gaining access to the household’s upper ranks 28.
- Forging is compulsory for both recruited disciples and blood descendants, including the main family’s young masters, because it deepens their understanding of the hammer art 20.
Affiliated Families and Internal Factions
The founder’s three disciples established the Ma, Lin, and Xu households within the organization. After centuries of change, the Ma Household disappeared, the Lin Household declined, and the Xu Household grew stronger. Despite this multi-family structure, leadership remained with the Wu surname 28.
Relations between the main family and collateral branches are increasingly delicate. The rivalry between the First Madam and Second Madam reaches into minor branch establishments and may affect the choice of the next household head 19 20.
Business and Holdings
Commercial Reach
| Measure | Documented Extent |
|---|---|
| Cloud Province ironware trade | Controls approximately 70% 17. |
| Cloud Province iron military equipment | Supplies approximately 90% 17. |
| Branch network | A Wu Ironworks in every small town in Cloud Province 17. |
| Products | Sabers, arrows, bows, armor, kitchen knives, spatulas, and other ironware 17 24. |
| Outside markets | Holds a respectable market share beyond Cloud Province 17. |
| Specialist capacity | Maintains enough grand Master Artisans to fulfill the limited demand for highly demanding custom weapons 24. |
Smithing Specializations
| Specialization | Standards and Standing |
|---|---|
| Civilian ironware | Everyday implements; lower standing than military-equipment work 24. |
| Military equipment | Weapons and armor requiring strict quality control; handled by experienced Artisans or Master Artisans 24. |
| Martial-world weapons | Ranges from ordinary sharp, sturdy weapons to elaborate commissions requiring grand Master Artisans 24. |
Green Ram Market Branch
- Occupies the town center, combining a storefront with a rear workshop; it is Green Ram Market’s largest establishment but among the household’s smallest, lowest-tier branches 17 24.
- Handles ordinary civilian ironware and ordinary martial-world weapons, rather than specialized military production 24.
- Its principal customers are martial artists using the town to replenish equipment before entering the mountains. Local purchasing power is limited, and Wu ironware costs roughly 10–20% more than products from ordinary smithies 17.
- Employs one Master Artisan who normally serves as an instructor rather than forging personally 24.
- Pays weapon smiths twice the wages of civilian-ironware smiths 24.
- Provides meat at every meal even to apprentices, supporting the physical demands of smithing 17.
- Uses some ordinary customers’ orders as apprentice practice 17.
Martial Arts and Craft Skills
Nine-Dragon Divine Fire Art
The household’s principal ancestral cultivation art originated in the Heavenly Dragon Way 19 34.
- Draws in fire-element spiritual energy and converts it into internal energy 31.
- Provides introductory practitioners with control over fire-element energy useful in metalworking 19.
- At its pinnacle, combines with earthfire origin baleful energy to condense nine fire dragons, forming nine-dragon divine fire mystic astral energy 34.
- Its complete inheritance is restricted to one direct heir per generation; ordinary instructors know only foundational techniques 31 34.
Eighty-One-Form Chaotic Wind Hammer Method
Created by the founding ancestor through smithing Enlightenment, this hammer art serves both combat and craftsmanship 19 22.
- Its first nine forms are taught as the Nine-Form Hammer Technique, also called the Nine-Form Wild-Wind Technique 19 28.
- Practicing the forms greatly improves forging skill 19 22.
- The first nine forms contain almost all the method’s essence. At complete mastery, they combine into its final killing move, Heaven-Breaking Hammer 22.
- The full eighty-one-form art is also described as the Wild Cloak Hammer Technique 20.
Artifact Refining
The founder adapted the Nine-Dragon Divine Fire Art to refining artifacts, giving the household a distinctive advantage over ordinary smiths 31.
- Fire-element internal energy expels impurities more effectively than conventional coal or charcoal flames 31.
- The resulting artifacts have superior strength and toughness 31.
- The method is intricate enough to demand study comparable to advanced martial arts; Old Xing and Qin Xuanlong possess only introductory knowledge 31.
Body Tempering and Supporting Instruction
- Young clan members receive medicinal preparations that cleanse their sinews, bones, and meridians and improve their cultivation foundations 20.
- The household possesses specialized skin-training and bone-tempering fist techniques. Old Xing knows a second-rate bone-tempering art despite not being an inner disciple 22.
- Elite instruction explains martial principles rather than merely teaching movements 22.
- Zhou Bao learns the commonplace Land-Flying Technique at the ironworks 36.
Documented Martial Strength
| Figure or Requirement | Rank / Realm | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Founding ancestor | Ninth Rank, Sinew Transformation | Established the household and its martial inheritance 11 19. |
| Strongest contemporary elder | Newly attained Seventh Rank, Sinew Transformation | His presence deters threats against the lineage 26. |
| Elder eligibility | Fourth Rank, Bone Tempering | Minimum cultivation qualification, not automatic appointment 28. |
| Qin Xuanlong | Third Rank, Skin Training | A branch master smith whose understanding remains below that of high-rank experts 35. |

Story Role / Major Events
Zhou Bao’s Apprenticeship
Zhou Bao enters the Green Ram Market ironworks chiefly because its meals provide the meat needed for martial training. His hammering Enlightenment and existing fire-element inner qi draw Old Xing’s attention, earning him personal instruction and a route toward household selection 17 18 19.
After Old Xing’s death, Qin Xuanlong continues his training. Zhou Bao becomes a qualified blacksmith, sends earnings home, and develops craftsmanship comparable to an ordinary Master Artisan’s while preparing for selection 23 24 28.
Dragon-Subduing Grass and the Murder Cover-Up
The Second Madam’s request for three stalks of dragon-subduing grass draws Steward Fang, Steward Lin, and Old Xing into the rivalry between the household’s leading women. The herb can multiply a medicinal preparation’s effectiveness, but knowledge of its location leaves the men feeling unable to remain neutral 20.
Old Xing and Steward Lin are subsequently murdered. After their replacements arrive, the investigation is suppressed: the deaths are attributed to roaming bandits, and evidence of alleged embezzlement is produced against the victims. Zhou Bao suspects a household cover-up, but neither the murderer nor a confirmed connection to the herb mission is revealed in the supplied events 23.
Drugged Guard Dogs
Zhou Bao secretly tests Soul-Dazing Pills on the ironworks’ dozen or so wolfdogs. Their prolonged unconsciousness puts the branch on high alert and prompts a half-month investigation. His medicine purchases are examined, but the ordinary ingredients clear him of suspicion. The dogs ultimately die of thirst without waking 27 28.
The Complete Ancestral Art Outside the Household
After abducting Zhou Bao, Blood Wuya gives him a complete manual of the Nine-Dragon Divine Fire Art, including its astral-energy method. This grants a low-ranking Wu blacksmith access to an inheritance normally reserved for the household’s future head 33 34.
The gift does not represent cooperation with the Wu Household: Blood Wuya is using Zhou Bao for his own recovery and intends to kill him to prevent his martial secrets from spreading 35 42 45.
