Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
First Nine Great Wilderness Form 1 2 Mastered at age three after beginning training around age one. His strength, running, and jumping nearly matched an adult’s, allowing him to assist with hunting.
Second Nine Great Wilderness Form 2 Mastered at age five. Took over all hunting as the old man became too weak to travel.
Fourth Nine Great Wilderness Form 2 Mastered before age eight; few local fierce beasts remained dangerous to him. The third form’s completion is not separately described.
Fifth Nine Great Wilderness Form 2 Mastered at age eight by linking its nine movements into one uninterrupted sequence after a night of practice.
Complete mastery of the Nine Great Wilderness Forms 9 10 Confirmed after ten years of solitary training. Combined the Forms with extreme external conditioning to exceed ordinary human limits; even a novice cultivator might not defeat him.
Unexplained spiritual-energy absorption 16 Broke the copper box’s confinement formation through sheer force. Its released golden spiritual energy entered his body without injuring him.
Fusion with the Spirit-Devouring Beast 17 23 24 Gained exceptionally detailed inner sight and access to the beast’s vast divine sense. No conventional cultivation realm or acquired Spiritual Root is confirmed.

Wood Vein Spirit Fruit enhancement 29 33 Obtained the fruit from the mutated Golden-Eyed Eagle. Keeping it close supplies life energy and rapidly restores stamina.
Complete meridian awareness 40 Recognized the beast’s recurring routes as his major, extraordinary, and hidden meridians, gaining unusually comprehensive knowledge of his internal pathways.

Background / History

Liu Xing arrived on Connors Star as a newborn in an escape pod. The old man found him several years after becoming stranded there and raised him as his own child. Nothing identified the infant’s family; the old man only guessed that his parents had used the pod to save him during a space-travel accident. He named the boy Liu Xing because the pod had fallen like a shooting star 5.

After discovering that Liu Xing possessed an exceptional physique but no Spiritual Root, the old man taught him the Nine Great Wilderness Forms to prepare him for survival. Training began around age one. As the old man’s ruined cultivation and dwindling spiritual energy left him increasingly helpless, Liu Xing became their sole hunter and provider 1 2 4 5.

The old man also required him to memorize jade slips containing secret arts and other knowledge, destroying each slip once it had been learned. He concealed his own identity and past to prevent Liu Xing from attracting the powerful enemies who had driven him into exile 2 5 6.

The old man died when Liu Xing was eight. Unable to bury him in the soil, Liu Xing seated his body in a corner of their cave and built a stone grave around it. He kept vigil for a day and night before running hundreds of kilometers through the wilderness to vent his grief 6.

For the next ten years, Liu Xing lived alone and intensified his training without guidance. His reckless conditioning repeatedly pushed him past his physical limits, while the Forms, his constitution, and his will enabled him to endure. He eventually mastered the entire art, fulfilled his childhood ambition of catching the Spotted Mouse King, and finished memorizing and destroying the remaining jade slips 7 8 9.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall, straight, and powerfully built by his youth 7 14.
  • Face: Handsome, with firm, blade-carved facial lines and a lingering trace of childishness 7 21.
  • Clothing: Wears animal-hide clothing, including a short jacket whose lining conceals his Fire Vein Spirit Jade 13 20.
  • Smile: Trained by the old man to reveal precisely eight teeth, giving his smile a refined, friendly appearance despite his rustic clothing 22 25.

Personality

Liu Xing’s defining trait is persistence. He accepts painful training as necessary for survival and refuses to treat his lack of a Spiritual Root as an absolute limit. Initially determined to make external training surpass internal cultivation, he becomes interested in an internal path after experiencing the hidden workings of his own body 2 9 10 17.

His cheerful jokes often conceal distress. As a child, he hides his fear of the old man’s death behind hunting boasts and banter; years later, he still speaks to the stone grave and shares food with his deceased guardian 1 6 9.

Although inexperienced with other people, Liu Xing is observant rather than foolish. He deliberately presents himself as a harmless country bumpkin, conceals valuable discoveries, and learns quickly from Lu Xuanqing’s explanations. His affection for her does not immediately overcome his caution about revealing his secrets 13 24 25 30.

He is proud and ambitious, particularly resentful of powerful cultivators who dismiss mortals as insignificant. Nevertheless, he can suppress that pride when resistance would be suicidal, cooperating with Lu Xuanqing’s staged rejection rather than exposing them both 42 44.

Abilities & Skills

Nine Great Wilderness Forms and External Conditioning

An ancient martial art selected to draw out Liu Xing’s exceptional physical potential. Each of its nine forms contains nine increasingly difficult movements 2 5.

  • Develops superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and resistance to blows 5.
  • Enables powerful leaps exceeding a hundred meters and sustained high-speed travel 18.
  • Gives him precise control when throwing stones or massive boulders; he accurately targets the Icehorn Giant Bear from several thousand meters away 8 35.
  • Allows feats such as breaking the copper box’s formation core with thumb strength approaching a thousand jin and hurling the giant bear into the air 16 36.
  • Cannot directly harm a soul spirit composed of spiritual energy. His mortal body also remains vulnerable to extreme cold and overwhelming cultivator attacks 11 19 36.

Heightened Senses and Spiritual Awareness

His physical training sharpens his senses, while an innate spiritual awareness lets him inspect jade slips even without conventional cultivation 2 10 15.

  • Hearing and eyesight become dozens of times keener than those of an ordinary person 10.
  • Can wake immediately when an unfamiliar disturbance approaches his cave 10.
  • Possesses a firm will and naturally powerful spiritual awareness that would make possession difficult for an ordinary cultivator—not impossible for every opponent 15 50.
  • After bonding with the beast, experiences inner sight detailed enough to observe cellular growth, division, and death; this vision fades when the beast sleeps 17.

Spirit-Devouring Beast Bond

The rabbit-like yellow phantom released from the copper box fuses with Liu Xing’s divine sense and resides within his body. Their connection grants abilities that normally require a Nascent Soul cultivator to sustain the beast at enormous personal cost 17 23 24.

  • Treasure detection: Shares discoveries that lead him to Fire Vein Spirit Jade and Wood Vein Spirit Fruit 18 19 29.
  • Remote observation: Its divine sense covers a radius of a thousand li and can follow cultivators beyond the planet’s surface 45 46.
  • Eavesdropping: Lets him hear supposedly private voice transmissions between Lu Yangong and Sun Yanbo 46.
  • Danger warnings: Alerts him to hostile intent and to Sun Yanbo targeting him with divine sense 43 44 50.
  • Protection: The beast consumes the dragon-shaped soul spirit and later swallows the giant bear’s freezing breath 19 36.
  • Internal mapping: Its movements reveal even hidden meridians within his body 40.
  • Limits: He cannot reliably summon or command it. It often sleeps or ignores him, and the Nascent Soul duel’s destructive force makes its divine sense retreat 23 24 40 47.

Hunting, Deception, and Learned Knowledge

  • Wilderness survival: Eighteen years on Connors Star give him extensive knowledge of its terrain, predators, and abnormal animal behavior 31 50.
  • Cooking: Prepares game effectively; Lu Xuanqing repeatedly praises his roasted Grass Deer 30.
  • Feigning weakness: Uses a naïve persona to lower the Five Uglies’ leader’s guard, then strikes during a distraction 13 14.
  • Information control: Mixes truth with concealment and removes evidence of the eagle’s transformation to protect his treasures 24 28 30.
  • Memorized teachings: Retains the old man’s secret training methods and formulas, though memorization initially far exceeds his understanding 5 9 10.
  • Language: Speaks fluent, standard Federation language despite growing up outside human society 22.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Fire Vein Spirit Jade — A red, pigeon’s-egg-sized treasure recovered from Sky-Peak Volcano. Concealed against his body, it improves his physical condition and contains enough energy to sustain the Spirit-Devouring Beast for roughly six months to a year 19 20 25.
  • Wood Vein Spirit Fruit — A glowing green fruit recovered from the Golden-Eyed Eagle’s body and kept beside the fire jade. Rapidly replenishes his stamina; he conceals its existence from Lu Xuanqing 29 30 33.
  • Small Copper Box — The formation-sealed container removed from Lu Xuanqing’s necklace. Liu Xing breaks it open and later shows her the emptied box 16 22 23.
  • Jade slips — Former repositories of the old man’s teachings. Liu Xing memorizes their contents and destroys them as instructed; their knowledge survives in his memory 2 6 9.
  • Stones and boulders — Improvised ranged weapons used against Spotted Mice, the Golden-Eyed Eagle, and the Icehorn Giant Bear 8 28 35.

Relationships

  • The old man — Adoptive guardian and teacher, who treats Liu Xing as a beloved grandson. Liu Xing preserves his teachings, maintains his stone grave, and risks confronting the giant bear partly to protect his resting place 5 6 9 35.
  • Lu Xuanqing — Rescued cultivator, companion, and guide to the outside world. Their guarded cooperation develops into warm friendship with possible romantic potential, but not an established romance. She later stages a cruel rejection to conceal his importance from her captors 14 25 30 40 44.
  • Spirit-Devouring Beast — Resident spiritual companion whose discoveries and interventions repeatedly benefit him. Liu Xing persistently tries to befriend it despite its aloofness 17 19 29 40.
  • Eldest Brother of the Five Uglies of Meng Mountain — His first cultivator kill. Liu Xing exploits the severely wounded man’s arrogance and distraction rather than defeating him in a direct contest 14 15.
  • Bai Hengqiu — An overwhelmingly powerful visitor whose contemptuous bearing angers Liu Xing. Liu Xing follows Lu Xuanqing’s warning not to challenge him 42 44.
  • Lu Yangong — A dangerous elder whose concealed hostility Liu Xing detects. Liu Xing secretly monitors him after Lu Xuanqing is taken away 43 44 45.
  • Sun Yanbo — Initially seen as a possible rescuer for Lu Xuanqing and a route off Connors Star. Their first meeting turns hostile when the dying cultivator attempts to possess Liu Xing 47 49 50.
