Background / History

The Heavenly Demon Sect dispatched two Nascent Soul Realm experts to capture the Spirit-Devouring Beast. One fought a competing righteous Nascent Soul cultivator, leaving both combatants badly injured; the other exhausted his spiritual energy creating the Small Copper Box that imprisoned it. With both sect experts needing recovery, the injured Lu Xuanqing was entrusted with transporting the beast home 24.

The Five Uglies of Meng Mountain, who accompanied Lu Xuanqing and piloted her spaceship, betrayed her to seize the beast. She killed three of them before the ship crashed on Connors Star. After her desperate final attack against the survivors, Liu Xing killed the remaining eldest brother and took her to his cave 13 14 24.

While examining the unconscious Lu Xuanqing, Liu Xing discovered the copper box beneath her clothing and broke its confinement formation. His body absorbed the released golden spiritual energy without injury. The beast then emerged, entered him too quickly for him to evade, and merged with his divine sense. Its initial intrusion caused a violent shock, but it subsequently settled in his lower abdomen and slept 16 17 23.

Lu Xuanqing could not explain this bond. She later speculated that Liu Xing had absorbed the formation’s stored energy and that his body had effectively replaced the copper box as the beast’s enclosure. This remained an explanation she proposed, not a confirmed account of why it chose him 30.

Appearance

  • Manifests as a tiny, yellow, rabbit-shaped phantom rather than a flesh-and-blood animal 16 19 23.
  • Has a small, three-lobed mouth capable of swallowing spiritual entities much larger than itself 19.
  • Appears in a flash of yellow light when emerging from Liu Xing’s body 36.

Personality

The beast possesses intelligence comparable to a human’s and communicates emotions and simple messages through divine sense. Nevertheless, it usually sleeps, ignores Liu Xing’s attempts to speak with it, and follows its own interests rather than his requests 24 40.

Its strongest reactions concern food and treasures: it expresses hunger, satisfaction, agitation, and eagerness to obtain valuable sources of spiritual energy. It becomes frenzied when confronting the Icehorn Giant Bear, but is not persistently demanding; when Liu Xing refuses to take the Water Vein Spirit Jade, it eventually abandons its urging and returns to sleep 17 19 29 35 38.

Abilities & Skills

Spiritual-Energy Devouring

The beast survives by consuming immense quantities of spiritual energy. This feeding ability also allows it to swallow spiritual entities and energy-based attacks 23 36.

  • Soul-spirit consumption: Swallows the dragon-shaped soul spirit in Sky-Peak Volcano whole, drawing it into its mouth as though into a vortex 19.
  • Attack absorption: Consumes the Icehorn Giant Bear’s freezing breath because its power derives from spiritual energy, creating an opening for Liu Xing to attack 36.
  • Survival requirement: Can die if deprived of sufficient spiritual energy. Liu Xing’s Fire Vein Spirit Jade alone contains enough to sustain it for approximately six months to a year 22 25.
  • Not complete cold protection: Its intervention stops the bear’s breath attack, but Liu Xing still suffers extreme cold when touching the bear 36 37.

Treasure Detection

Its divine sense covers a radius of one thousand li and detects even minute unusual fluctuations in spiritual energy. This makes it a natural seeker of spirit veins and Innate Supreme Treasures 23 46.

  • Detects treasures hidden underground and sources whose energy is concealed from ordinary cultivators, including spirit jade 20 29 38.
  • Can identify a treasure-bearing creature without directly seeing the object inside it 27 29.
  • Responds differently to treasures of different value. Its mild appreciation of Sun Yanbo’s Overlord Sword leads Liu Xing to judge it less valuable than the spirit treasures already discovered 46.
  • Limitation: Its scans cannot readily penetrate flesh and blood. The Golden-Eyed Eagle must fly nearby before it detects the fruit inside, and Liu Xing must open the corpse to reveal it 29.

Shared Divine Sense and Surveillance

Through their merged divine sense, Liu Xing can perceive the beast’s discoveries as detailed scenes beyond his own body 23 45.

  • Undetectable tracking: Maintains a faint thread around Lu Yangong that even his Nascent Soul Realm perception fails to notice 44 45.
  • Multiple targets: Divides its divine sense into separate strands to monitor Lu Yangong and Sun Yanbo simultaneously 46.
  • Intercepted transmissions: Detects the spiritual energy used in secret voice transmission, allowing Liu Xing to hear conversations in the vacuum of space 46.
  • Concealment detection: Locates the weakened Sun Yanbo despite his having withdrawn his spiritual energy so thoroughly that another Nascent Soul expert should not have found him 50.
  • Limit under overwhelming force: The destructive clash between Lu Yangong and Sun Yanbo forces its divine sense to retreat 47.

Mental Communication and Warnings

The beast sends simple messages and emotional impressions directly to Liu Xing rather than speaking aloud 17 24 40.

  • Communicates hunger, fullness, satisfaction, and directions toward desirable spiritual-energy sources 17 18 19 29.
  • Alerts Liu Xing to Lu Yangong’s murderous intent toward Lu Xuanqing 43 44.
  • Warns him when Sun Yanbo locks divine sense onto him 50.
  • Does not reliably answer questions or obey instructions; Liu Xing initially cannot summon it from his body 23 40.

Internal Meridian Exploration

Its movements through Liu Xing’s body follow fixed routes encompassing the twelve primary meridians, eight extraordinary meridians, and special hidden meridians 40.

  • Its initial activity gives Liu Xing exceptionally detailed inner sight 17.
  • Repeatedly traversing these routes allows him to memorize his complete meridian network despite lacking a foundation in internal cultivation 40.
  • This knowledge is an incidental benefit of the beast’s movements, not deliberate instruction 40.

Ecology and Containment

Rarity and Natural Habitat

  • Spirit-Devouring Beasts are extraordinarily rare; their total number in the universe is stated not to exceed three 23.
  • They normally inhabit rich natural spirit veins or locations containing powerful Innate Supreme Treasures 23.
  • They consume a location’s spiritual energy until too little remains to support them, then seek another source 23.
  • Their title as sovereigns of demon beasts derives from their unique traits, not overwhelming combat power 23.

Capture and Use

Method Requirements and consequences
Sealed vessel Capturing an incorporeal beast requires favorable circumstances, Nascent Soul Realm cultivation, and a vessel formed from enormous quantities of spiritual energy 23.
Small Copper Box Its Golden Light Spirit-Locking Formation conceals the stored energy. Forcing it open releases an attack that even a Golden Core expert would struggle to withstand 16 23.
Conventional host A Nascent Soul cultivator imprisons the beast within their body and shares its divine sense, but must devote all cultivation and newly accumulated spiritual energy to feeding it—effectively sacrificing their cultivation 23.
Liu Xing’s bond A mortal without an innate spiritual root gains shared divine sense without sacrificing a Nascent Soul expert. The mechanism remains unexplained 23 24 30.

No proper method of taming the beast is known. Even a Nascent Soul host cannot command treasure searches at will and ordinarily must wait for it to become hungry and search on its own 23 24.

Relationships

  • Liu Xing — Host and divine-sense partner. He conceals the full extent of their connection, regards it as his greatest secret, and persistently tries to befriend the aloof beast 29 40.
  • Lu Xuanqing — Former escort responsible for returning it to the Heavenly Demon Sect. She worries about its survival and later helps conceal it from powerful visitors 24 25 42.
  • Heavenly Demon Sect — Captor seeking new spiritual lands through its treasure-finding ability. Liu Xing’s bond offers a way to use it without sacrificing one of the sect’s three Nascent Soul experts 24.
  • Lu Yangong — Seeks possession of the beast as a means to establish influence beyond the sect. Being expected to sacrifice his cultivation as its host contributes to his resentment and betrayal 45 47.

Sect Conflict and Covert Observation

  • Strategic importance: The Heavenly Demon Sect seeks the beast to locate spiritual-energy-rich territory, countering the disadvantage of demonic factions whose planets are poorer than those occupied by righteous sects 24.
  • Protection through deception: Its warning about Lu Yangong helps Liu Xing and Lu Xuanqing recognize the immediate threat. Their staged falling-out allows Liu Xing to leave without revealing his importance 43 44.
