Neither Nuwa nor Fuxi had anticipated this situation at all.
Nuwa could at least understand it. She had once seen Black Tortoise refuse an invitation from the Western Teachings, insisting on serving as an attendant under Xu Tong instead.
Fuxi, however, simply could not understand Black Tortoise's actions.
Despite his profound cultivation, Black Tortoise had no desire to contend with anyone. Worse still, he recoiled from Fuxi's invitation to become one of the Heavenly Court's Four Emperors as though it were a nest of snakes and scorpions!
Had Fuxi not been one of the Four Emperors himself, and known exactly what benefits that position offered, he might have begun to suspect that it was some sort of trap.
"Fellow Daoist Fuxi, if you've come to reminisce, you're more than welcome. But please don't bring this matter up again."
After hearing Black Tortoise's words, Fuxi felt utterly out of sorts.
Had he just invited Black Tortoise to become one of the Heavenly Court's Four Emperors, or had he invited him to his death?
"Master, a seat among the Heavenly Court's Four Emperors is a good thing. I currently hold one myself. If I didn't have more important duties waiting for me, this position wouldn't be opening up."
Fuxi wore a bitter smile, thinking he must have failed to explain the importance of the position clearly.
"Fellow Daoist Fuxi, never mind a seat among the Heavenly Court's Four Emperors. Even the position of Lord of the Heavenly Court holds no interest for me."
Seeing how determined Fuxi was to make him take that position, Black Tortoise could not help sighing.
"No matter what the position is, it means nothing to me."
"All I want now is to cultivate in seclusion in the Dao Field."
After Black Tortoise finished speaking, Fuxi fell silent
