Background / History

Xu Tong had read numerous Primordial World novels before transmigrating. He awakens on Kunlun Mountain as Tongtian before sagehood, initially delighted at becoming one of the future Six Heavenly Sages. That excitement disappears when he recalls the destruction of the Interception Sect during the Investiture Calamity and Tongtian’s subsequent imprisonment by Hongjun 1.

He concludes that merely refusing to establish the Interception Sect would not guarantee safety: without transcending the Heavenly Dao, he might still be forced into its tribulations. He therefore rejects Hongjun’s sermons, primordial violet qi, and the conventional route to Heavenly Dao Sagehood. His first system choice grants the Heaven-Earth Origin Art, allowing him to pursue independent cultivation while remaining on Kunlun Mountain 1 2.

Personality

Xu Tong’s caution is deliberate rather than aimless. He repeatedly sacrifices immediate opportunities—including rare treasures, public recognition, and assistance to others—to avoid karmic obligations and the Heavenly Dao’s arrangements. Even after proving his Dao, he refuses to display his strength because Hongjun remains more powerful 3 6 20 26.

His courteous exterior conceals a sarcastic and distrustful inner voice. He avoids openly breaking with Laozi and Yuanshi, instead using their concern for reputation to redirect them. He also gives deliberately vague answers when Laozi probes his cultivation method 7 16 17.

When he possesses leverage, Xu Tong becomes an assertive negotiator. He exploits Hongjun’s urgent need for the Nine Heavens Breathing Soil, counters intimidation with creation merit, and demands compensation rather than surrendering the material. His willingness to guide Houtu likewise balances practical gain with caution about revealing heaven’s secrets 37 38 39 45.

Abilities & Skills

Heaven-Earth Origin Art and Proving Dao by Force

Pangu’s cultivation method forms the foundation of Xu Tong’s independent path 2.

  • Draws Heaven and Earth Spiritual Energy into his body and rapidly breaks his initial cultivation bottleneck 2.
  • Allows advancement without severing the three corpses 3.
  • Develops a powerful physical body alongside cultivation of the Force Great Dao 45.
  • Ultimately enables him to prove his Dao as a Primordial Daluo Golden Immortal without primordial violet qi 26.

Force Great Dao

Also described as the Great Dao of Strength, this is Xu Tong’s chosen foundational Dao. The system grants its seed after he refuses Hongjun’s primordial violet qi 12 13.

  • Provides a source of comprehension independent of the Heavenly Dao’s restrictions 13.
  • Accelerates his breakthrough to late-stage Quasi-Sage 13 15.
  • Enables him to sever the violet qi’s attempted connection and send it far away 14.
  • Forms the foundation of the combat strength that places him above ordinary Sages after proving his Dao 26.

World Evolution and Law Comprehension

Xu Tong combines the Chaos Bead, World Tree Sprout, and Force Great Dao Seed to establish a developing world of chaos 25.

  • The combination fulfills the conditions needed for world formation 25.
  • The three thousand worlds offer repeated opportunities to observe the evolution of heaven and earth and comprehend Great Dao laws 25 26.
  • Understanding the evolution of all three thousand worlds enables his Primordial Daluo Golden Immortal breakthrough 26.
  • Further growth remains limited by the small number of laws within the Chaos Bead; he intends to use the Five Directions Banners to expand them 43.

Formations and Concealment

Tongtian possesses a profound understanding of formations, which Xu Tong strengthens through the Chaos Bead 10.

  • Creates layered restrictions that alert him to probing or intrusion 10.
  • Uses the Sage Dao Field to obstruct observation even by a Saint 8.
  • At thirty-percent refinement of the Chaos Bead, combines its concealment with the Dao Field to resist Hongjun’s Jade Disc of Creation 28.
  • By nearly forty-percent refinement, makes Hongjun’s unaided divination attempts still less effective 34.

One Qi Transforms into Three Pure Ones

The system grants this divine ability at full mastery when Hongjun visits Kunlun Mountain 35.

  • Creates three physical avatars, which Xu Tong initially keeps at peak Quasi-Sage level 35.
  • Two resemble Laozi and Yuanshi; the third most closely resembles Xu Tong’s Tongtian identity 35.
  • Sends the Tongtian-like avatar to negotiate with Hongjun, keeping his true body and cultivation concealed 35 36.
  • Successfully deceives Hongjun, who finds nothing unusual when examining the avatar 36.

Creation Merit and the Merit Golden Wheel

Xu Tong retains Tongtian’s immense creation merit rather than spending it to increase his cultivation, contrary to his brothers’ assumptions 5 15.

  • Can manifest the merit as a radiant Merit Golden Wheel 37.
  • Transfers his creation merit to the negotiating avatar as a deterrent against Hongjun 37.
  • Uses the prospect of Heavenly Dao punishment to make attacking him appear too costly 37 40.
  • The avatar’s protection is partly a bluff: destroying it would not equal killing his true body, so the punishment would be less severe than Hongjun fears 37.
  • Receives merit from Nuwa’s creation of humanity through his contribution of the Nine Heavens Breathing Soil 43 44.

Artifact Forging and Indirect Guidance

Xu Tong has also studied alchemy and artifact forging, though these are not his primary specialties 45.

  • Forges four Heavenly Pillars from Nine Heavens Breathing Soil and Pangu’s blood essence 45.
  • Gives Houtu indirect guidance linking merit, fortune, and reincarnation to attaining the Dao without a primordial spirit 45.
  • Withholds a complete explanation to reduce the risk of disrupting fate or giving Hongjun grounds to act against him 45.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

Cultivation and Defensive Resources

  • Chaos Bead — An intact supreme Chaos treasure used for concealment, restrictions, and internal world development. Refined to thirty percent by the third sermon and nearly forty percent before Hongjun’s personal visit 10 25 28 34.
  • Sage Dao Field — System reward chosen instead of Pangu Jade Marrow or Pangu Blood Essence. Shields his retreat from observation and works alongside the Chaos Bead 8 24 28.
  • Force Great Dao Seed — Independent source of law comprehension; stored inside the Chaos Bead 13.
  • World Tree Sprout — Reward for refusing to join his brothers’ revenge campaign; becomes a central resource for world evolution and cultivation 15 16 25.

Treasures and Materials

  • Immortal Slaying Formation Diagram — Obtained by declining the Buzhou Mountain gourd opportunity. Incomplete without the Four Immortal-Slaying Swords, which Xu Tong does not possess 3.
  • Primordial Golden Dou — Seclusion reward that he briefly examines before storing away; he considers it less valuable than the treasures he could have pursued 5.
  • Apricot-Yellow Plum — Innate spiritual root awarded for refusing to fight Di Jun and Taiyi 6 7.
  • Twelve-Grade World-Destroying Black Lotus — Contains an incomplete Law of Destruction. Xu Tong considers that law overly violent and inferior to his chosen Law of Strength 20.
  • Twelve Divine Refining Pills — Can nourish and potentially form a primordial spirit. Stored for future use because his own Pangu-derived primordial spirit is already powerful 26.
  • Nine Heavens Breathing Soil — Crucial material for Nuwa’s creation of humanity. Xu Tong lends it through Hongjun but secretly retains a small portion 28 40 43 44.
  • Pangu Blood Essence — A drop received from Houtu in payment for guidance. Used for forging rather than absorbed, since Xu Tong doubts that another being’s blood would benefit his cultivation in the long term 45.
  • Four Heavenly Pillars — Thumb-sized artifacts forged from the retained soil and Pangu’s blood essence. Can expand through activation of laws to support heaven and earth; not yet deployed in the provided events 45.
  • Merit Creation Pool — Reward for declining to rescue Fuxi or warn Nuwa. Xu Tong regards it as nearly useless to him 47.

Promised Compensation

  • Complete Innate Five Directions Banners — Hongjun agrees to obtain all five as payment for borrowing the breathing soil. Xu Tong plans to derive their laws within the Chaos Bead; delivery is still pending when he discusses this plan 39 40 43.
  • Hongjun’s karmic debt — Secured as the other part of the breathing-soil agreement 39.

Relationships

  • Laozi — Eldest brother among the Three Pure Ones. Initially respects Xu Tong’s seclusion, but later probes his cultivation secrets and supports pressure to involve him in revenge. Xu Tong preserves outward courtesy while withholding information 1 15 16 17 24.
  • Yuanshi — Second elder brother. Repeatedly demands his help against Di Jun and Taiyi in the name of lineage and reputation. Xu Tong considers these demands self-serving and redirects him toward pursuing Sagehood 7 16 17.
  • Hongjun — Principal threat to Xu Tong’s independence. Attempts to recruit, investigate, tempt, and intimidate him; Xu Tong refuses discipleship and uses concealment, merit, and bargaining leverage to resist him 10 13 28 35 37 40.
  • Houtu — Seeks his knowledge of attaining the Dao. Exchanges Pangu’s blood essence for indirect guidance on merit and reincarnation, leaving with increased cultivation and sincere respect 44 45.
  • Nuwa — Indirect beneficiary of his breathing soil, which enables her creation of humanity and earns him a share of merit. He later refuses to warn her about Fuxi’s danger, fearing further obligations 43 44 47.
  • Di Jun and Eastern Emperor Taiyi — His brothers’ adversaries, whom he consistently refuses to fight. Di Jun initially assumes his absence from the sermons means weakness, then witnesses evidence of his superior Quasi-Sage cultivation 6 7 14 15.
  • Hong Yun — Xu Tong refuses to intervene in the plot against him or seize his violet qi. Hong Yun’s death reinforces Xu Tong’s belief that promised Sagehood is no substitute for personal strength 19 20 24.
  • North Sea Black Tortoise — Potential beneficiary of Xu Tong’s Heavenly Pillars, which may eliminate the future need to use the tortoise’s limbs to support the heavens 45.
