| Heavenly Dao Sage | 41 | Attains sagehood by creating the Human Race with Nine Heavens Breathing Soil. Receives 60% of the resulting Heavenly Dao merit and becomes a Sage before Laozi, Yuanshi, Zhunti, and Jieyin. |
Background / History
Creation of the Human Race
Nuwa discovers that creating a new race is her path to attaining the Dao, but her early attempts on Buzhou Mountain fail because she lacks suitable materials. Hongjun identifies the missing resource as the Nine Heavens Breathing Soil held by Xu Tong and eventually delivers it to her 34 35 41 43.
With Fuxi watching, Nuwa molds figures after Pangu’s Dao body. Each becomes a living human upon touching the ground. After shaping three thousand by hand, she uses a willow twig to scatter muddy droplets, rapidly creating many more. She declares the new people the Human Race, fulfilling her opportunity for sagehood 41.
Her success leaves her indebted to Xu Tong, whose soil made the creation possible. Houtu later recognizes his contribution from the merit that travels to Kunlun Mountain 41 43.
| Recipient | Share of creation merit | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Nuwa | 60% | Attains sagehood. |
| Human Race | 10% | Receives a share of the merit from its creation. |
| Willow twig | 5% | Becomes a Golden Whip, then disappears. |
| Xu Tong | 25% | Receives merit at Kunlun Mountain for providing the soil. |
All shares are explicitly described when humanity is created 41.
Fuxi’s First Recovery and Humanity’s Protection
When Fuxi’s true spirit is damaged, Nuwa accompanies Houtu to Xu Tong’s Dao Field to seek help. Her urgency makes her impatient with his refusal to appear, but his Divine Refining Pill ultimately restores Fuxi completely 51 53 60.
Nuwa also intervenes against the Demon Tribe’s slaughter of humans for the Witch-Slaying Sword. She orders the demons back to their Heavenly Court and challenges Di Jun when he hesitates to obey 69.
Her protection is not portrayed as consistent from humanity’s beginning. A later passage criticizes her for taking no Innate Human into Wa Huang Palace—not even as a servant whose presence would have demonstrated humanity’s access to her. It links this distance to her possession of only one-tenth of the Human Race’s fortune and an even smaller share of Human Path fortune 1039.
Mending the Heavens
Following Fuxi’s death during the Witch–Demon catastrophe, Nuwa prepares to retaliate against the Witch Clan. Houtu’s establishment of reincarnation interrupts her, and Hongjun directs the Sages to repair the collapsing world. He lends Nuwa the Qiankun Cauldron and orders her to refine Five-Colored Divine Stones to mend the heavens 80.
Before Hongjun can announce his intended solution for supporting heaven and earth, Nuwa installs four pre-forged Heavenly Pillars. Their placement stabilizes the world and removes the need to kill the North Sea Black Tortoise. Much of the resulting merit goes to Xu Tong, but Nuwa denies his involvement when Hongjun becomes suspicious 80 81.
Houtu explains that Fuxi died in the Eastern Emperor’s self-detonation, not at the Witch Clan’s hands. Nuwa drops her grievance and cooperates with Houtu over the defeated clans’ futures. After completing the heavenly repairs, she seeks Xu Tong’s advice about the displaced demons; they are later settled in a small realm in the North Sea 81 82 106.
The Heavenly Sovereign and Kongtong Seal
Nuwa preserves Fuxi’s true spirit in the Qiankun Cauldron while awaiting the opportunity for his return predicted by Xu Tong. At the Purple Cloud Palace, she uses her authority as humanity’s Holy Mother to claim control over the Heavenly Sovereign’s appointment and teaching role, as well as one of the Five Emperor positions. When the other Sages resist, she threatens to abolish the teaching positions altogether 92 94.
She initially intends to give Xu Tong the Heavenly Sovereign’s teaching role as repayment for his favors. After he refuses further involvement, she appoints Black Tortoise instead and charges him with protecting Fuxi’s reincarnation 94 95.
Nuwa subsequently realizes that Fuxi could become a figurehead permanently confined to anchoring humanity’s fortune. She therefore delays the sovereign arrangements and seeks the Kongtong Seal, which can bear that responsibility instead 96 102 110 113.
After Fuxi enters reincarnation, Xu Tong supplies a single-use enhanced Treasure-Dropping Golden Coin. Nuwa accepts the risk of a feud with Laozi, secretly takes his Kongtong Seal, and sends it to Fuxi when he declares himself Heavenly Sovereign. Fuxi uses the seal to stabilize humanity’s fortune without personally remaining bound to that task 123 127 128 140.
Alliance Against Hongjun
Nuwa’s trust in Hongjun weakens after the Heavenly Pillar incident. She increasingly turns to Xu Tong, whose guidance she sometimes interprets as more deliberate and profound than he intended 95 96 102.
Xu Tong eventually tells Nuwa and Houtu that Hongjun has not completed Dao Integration and is working to bring the world under his control. The three agree to obstruct that process. Their strategy includes delaying the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, acquiring the Kongtong Seal, and coordinating Witch–Human marriages without creating a separate race that would divide humanity’s fortune 112 113.
Xu Tong also provides uncontaminated primordial violet qi to replace Hongjun’s strands gradually and discreetly. Nuwa completes the replacement, but her soul remains anchored to the Primordial World. After Xu Tong becomes a Dao Integrator, he addresses this remaining vulnerability; by the time Fuxi cultivates in the Chaos Bead world, Nuwa’s soul is anchored there instead 112 113 395 403.
Investiture and the Mirror Reflection
During preparations for the Investiture Calamity, Nuwa becomes concerned about Lingzhuzi’s approaching life-and-death tribulation. She also helps locate Jiang Ziya discreetly through Houtu’s Underworld records, then passes the information to Fuxi and the Heavenly Court 164 166.
For the Journey to the West, Tathagata uses a mirror containing Nuwa’s reflection. He erases that reflection’s memories, gives her a mortal identity, and places her on Tang Sanzang’s route as a female bandit in his trial of love. This reflection becomes Nüyin, rather than being Nuwa’s true body 273 338.
Upon returning to the Primordial World, Nuwa learns what happened and is furious at Tathagata’s unauthorized use of her mirror. Tang Sanzang’s grief nevertheless moves her to restore Nüyin to him. She later confronts Tathagata, inflicts superficial injuries, and accepts his explanation that she was the most suitable participant in Saint Tongtian’s Love Calamity 338 341.
Teaching in the Three Extremes
Xu Tong later draws Nuwa out of her isolation in the Thirty-Three Heavens and entrusts the Three Extremes to her. She descends among mortals, distributes immortal pills, and begins teaching the Way of Human Harmony, emphasizing everyday necessities, family harmony, longevity, and freedom from illness 649 662 666.
At a public Dao discussion, she makes spiritual-energy revival conditional on humanity acknowledging and atoning for Qin Shi Huang’s Burning of Books and Burying of Scholars. She then uses the Landscape, Rivers, and Society Diagram to make plants and crops flourish, providing immediate material relief 671.
Nuwa and Houtu defend the region against Wutian for six months, but their formation and supporting forces become exhausted. Nuwa sends disciples to learn from Xu Xian’s teachings and joins other Daoist leaders in seeking Wutian’s weakness and a lasting solution through reincarnation 677 679.
As the defenses fail, Nuwa approaches Hongjun again. He proposes resurrecting Pangu as a way to restore order and reunite her with Fuxi, who has become lost in the Human Path. Nuwa accepts the Chaos Bottle, withdraws her diagram, and leaves to gather resurrection materials 663 685.
Later Activities
Nuwa subsequently joins Xu Tong’s world-creation efforts and attends the Mount Hua Dao debate 695 700. In later discussions, she openly exposes a Buddhist Sage’s attempt to absorb powerful prisoners and their followers under the pretext of helping them 879.
She also learns that the Western Lands Sages were responsible for the scheme behind King Zhou’s insulting poem. Cheng Tang’s visit to Wa Huang Palace after the Investiture war had revealed the deception to her 900.
Appearance
Nuwa’s innate form combines a human head with a snake’s body 1022.
- Frequent transformations: Described as undergoing seventy-one transformations in a day 1022.
- Expressive demeanor: Often smiles radiantly around Xu Tong; her later youthful, admiring manner leaves him privately embarrassed 342 953.
- Mount: Arrives at Kunlun Mountain riding an immortal crane 110.
Personality
Nuwa’s strongest personal commitment is to Fuxi. She urgently seeks treatment for his damaged true spirit, preserves him after his later death, and risks conflict with Laozi to prevent his Heavenly Sovereign position from costing him his freedom. She is equally sensitive to the survival of the people close to her in Wa Huang Palace 51 92 127 164.
Her gratitude toward Xu Tong develops into deep trust and unspoken affection. She repeatedly seeks to repay karmic debts, worries about taking his generosity for granted, and becomes unusually tolerant of his blunt refusals and lack of ceremony 95 102 108 341.
Nuwa can be forceful and politically calculating. She uses her authority over humanity to pressure other Sages, conceals her appointment of Black Tortoise, and refuses to spend her own merit and fortune to strengthen Lu Ya. Among mortals, however, she teaches patiently and ties spiritual instruction to food, shelter, health, and family life 94 110 151 666.
