Other-world Rankings

  • A later account identifies Duobao, Shakyamuni Tathagata as a first-tier Primordial Origin Golden Immortal and one of Buddhism’s four supreme masters of divine abilities 890.
  • The Medicine Lapis King Buddha Tathagata challenged by Bai Ze is a separately named Buddha, not Duobao Tathagata 888 969 970.

Background / History

Originally Daoist Duobao, Tathagata was Nuwa’s direct disciple and studied her Way of Creation. He later became the successor to Zhunti and Jieyin, receiving instruction from all three Sages 202 296.

During Buddhism’s founding, Duobao took ten steps in each cardinal direction and declared, “Throughout heaven and earth, I alone am supreme.” His clothing transformed into monastic robes, and he announced himself as the Buddhist Order’s Present Buddha. Zhunti and Jieyin immediately bowed to him despite their higher cultivation and status 192.

Tathagata established Spirit Mountain as a major power alongside Past Buddha Randeng and Future Buddha Maitreya. His declaration that every living being could seek enlightenment there allowed Golden Cicada to enter despite his reputation as a fierce beast 195.

Later-world Title Holder

The world Xu Tong explores from Jinshan Temple contains a current Tathagata whose power depends heavily on the Buddha Tathagata fruit position. He struggles to master that position fully and is secretly Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva’s disciple. These circumstances differ from Duobao’s earlier Sage ascension and should not be treated as a single uninterrupted cultivation record 609 623 632 633 641.

Appearance

  • Monastic robes: His Daoist attire changes into Buddhist robes when he becomes the Present Buddha 192.
  • Solemn bearing: Appears with a sacred, majestic countenance within his Buddha Realm 204.
  • Radiant golden form: Awakens from the Lotus Throne as a great golden Buddha; after reaching Sagehood, he can transform from an apparently fleshly body into a Buddha shining with golden light 332 414.
  • Towering manifestation: During the Heavenly Mountain sermon, his immense figure resembles a mountain summit, with a radiance compared to the sun 652.

Personality

Tathagata is a sincere seeker of the Dao with a steady foundation and an unwavering will. He accepts criticism when it can advance his cultivation: after Tang Sanzang exposes the weaknesses of his Buddha Realm, he eagerly requests guidance rather than defending his work 204 336.

His devotion coexists with meticulous planning. Xu Tong considers him someone who prepares before acting, while Black Tortoise remembers that the troubles he caused at Wa Huang Palace never seemed to endanger him personally. His reincarnation scheme preserves his body and power even while enemies believe he has abandoned Spirit Mountain 296 303 332.

He is also proud and uncompromising. After defeating Zhunti and Jieyin, he refuses shared rule over the Western Lands because his Dao demands sole supremacy. His resentment toward their restrictions makes the confrontation personal as well as political 416.

In the later-world accounts, Tathagata increasingly uses compassionate rhetoric to pursue institutional power. His relief campaigns, recruitment efforts, compromising information, and proposed imperial administration all serve his attempt to restore Buddhist influence 650 666 699 703.

Abilities & Skills

Buddha Realm

Tathagata combines Nuwa’s Way of Creation with Buddhism’s Heart-Questioning Technique, incorporating his accumulated understanding of the Dao into a constructed realm 202.

  • Mental immersion: Tang Sanzang loses his memories and power while immersed in the realm; the accompanying avatars remain unaffected 202 204.
  • Early limitation: Its events follow the participant’s mental logic rather than developing independently, allowing Tang Sanzang to recognize the deception 204.
  • Portable domain: After Sagehood, wherever Tathagata stands can become his Buddha Realm, removing his dependence on Spirit Mountain’s location 414.
  • Realm transformation: He can dissolve his body into the domain and oppose another Sage’s manifested world directly 414.
  • Independent development: Pagodas representing his own Dao make the realm self-sustaining and capable of growth, though it has not yet become a true world 416.
  • Spiritual risk: Damage to these manifested realms can seriously injure their creators because the worlds embody their understanding of the Dao 415.

Soul Division and Reincarnation

Rather than reincarnating his entire being, Tathagata sends only half his soul into multiple rebirths while sealing his original body within Spirit Mountain 332.

  • The missing half of his soul forces his original body into slumber 332.
  • His preserved power is linked to Spirit Mountain and sustained by its vitality and energy 330.
  • When the first reincarnation returns, all reincarnated fragments crumble into dust and return to him 332.
  • The process restores him with a qualitative increase in power rather than leaving him permanently weakened 332.

Secret Incarnations

Tathagata creates identities that conceal his involvement from other members of the Buddhist Order 350.

  • Moonlight Bodhisattva and Sunlight Bodhisattva: Secret incarnations used to learn what Spirit Mountain’s Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are thinking; even his former disciple Wutian does not know their origin 350.
  • Heavenly Court avatar: Holds a seat among the Four Emperors while Tathagata himself remains associated with Spirit Mountain 400 405.
  • Bodhi Seed avatars: In later-world accounts, he fashions fallen Bodhi Seeds into multiple Randeng manifestations and keeps them hidden within his body 660.

Tathagata Divine Palm

A destructive palm technique used in the later-world storyline 650 652.

  • His attack on Empress Suyin devastates Heavenly Mountain, although she escapes 650.
  • He summons the palm while announcing the opening of a passage to a parallel world 652.

Formations and Territorial Control

  • Realm-Guarding Array: Can activate Western Heaven’s protective formation while away from the realm 661.
  • Realm compression: Shrinks the Western Heaven Buddhist Realm and relinquishes half its territory to accommodate Kunlun’s return 662.
  • Forest of Obsession: Creates a mysterious magical array that spreads throughout the Primordial World; Zhu Bajie publicly exposes his involvement 702.

Bodhi Incense

In the later-world accounts, Tathagata uses Bodhi Seed fragrance for conversion, territorial expansion, and covert cultivation 660 667.

  • Lighting Bodhi Seeds in oil lamps produces a sacred aura capable of converting even a being such as Sun Wukong 660.
  • Buddhist followers carry Eternal Lamps and incense into other territories, claiming places reached by the fragrance 667.
  • The incense makes Laozi, Yuanshi, and Tongtian drowsy and inactive 667.
  • Tathagata secretly copies traces of their auras. Surpassing Wutian or the Sages is presented as a possibility, not a confirmed result 667.

Cosmic Cultivation

  • Ten Thousand Origins Returning to the Source: A cultivation path he leaves Heavenly Mountain to pursue, intending to become the strongest active expert while Sages remain outside the world 670.
  • Myriad Transformations: Scatters manifestations as streaks of light through the cosmos to seek enlightenment, temper his bodies, and strengthen himself 679.
  • Zhunti and Jieyin accompany him through the stars to study the Primordial World and the scars left by major battles 679.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Lotus Throne — Conceals his sealed body and preserved power during the reincarnation scheme. Wutian unknowingly sits above him until his awakening 331 332.
  • Bai Ze’s horn — Given to him by Zhunti’s manifestation to locate Bai Ze in the East Sea 210 211.
  • True Scriptures — Hands the pilgrimage scriptures to Xu Tong before resuming his confrontation with Wutian 332.
  • Compromising “True Scriptures” — In the later Mount Hua storyline, claims to possess a volume recording the assembled powers’ dark sides and uses it as leverage 699.
  • Bodhi Seeds and Eternal Lamps — Instruments of avatar creation, conversion, and incense-based expansion 660 667.
  • Pangu’s Soul-Summoning Banner — Possesses the Heavenly Eye Divine Ability, allowing it to see through the Primordial World. Xu Tong recognizes its components as Pangu’s eyes 703.
  • Heavenly Inquiry Stele — Records questions Tathagata cannot answer and invites living beings to resolve them; inspired by Qu Yuan’s writings 708.

Relationships

  • Nuwa — Original master and source of his instruction in the Way of Creation. She later beats him over the affair involving Tang Sanzang and Nüyin 202 350.
  • Xu Tong / Golden Cicada / Tang Sanzang — His martial uncle, adviser, and nominal second disciple. Tathagata recognizes Xu Tong beneath Golden Cicada’s identity and feels uncomfortable accepting his bow. He credits Xu Tong’s warning with helping him choose the timing of reincarnation 195 204 338.
  • Zhunti and Jieyin — Teachers whose promised transfer of Spirit Mountain conceals a restriction on his path to Sagehood. He escapes that arrangement, then defeats them for control of the Western Lands 405 416.
  • Wutian / Jinnaluo — Former disciple turned enemy who drives him into apparent reincarnation. Tathagata defeats him after returning; later-world accounts instead depict cooperation in governing reincarnation 296 336 350 703.
  • Guanyin Bodhisattva — Administrator and subordinate who initially manages the pilgrimage trials. In the later-world storyline, she eventually leaves with Amitabha 202 254 703.
  • Fuxi — Accepts his request for a vacant Four Emperors seat; Tathagata’s avatar takes the position 400 405.
  • Bai Ze — Recruits him through the karmic debt owed to Zhunti and Jieyin, with possible admission to Spirit Mountain dependent on surviving the assignment 211.
  • Sun Wukong — Seals him for five hundred years and later retains the upper hand against him in battle 303 369.
  • Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva — Secret master of the later-world Tathagata. Their public disagreement conceals a coordinated political scheme 633.
  • Amitabha — In early accounts, the manifestation of Zhunti and Jieyin who advises him. In the later Mount Hua storyline, a leader connected to Phoenix who establishes a separate Buddhist community 210 701 703.
  • Queen Mother of the West — Tathagata initially yields territory to accommodate her restored Kunlun; later, her counterattack forces him to retreat into cosmic cultivation 662 670.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Journey to the West

Tathagata oversees the pilgrimage’s overall direction while Guanyin initially handles individual trials. He personally tests the pilgrims through his Buddha Realm, only to discover that Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing are manifestations of Xu Tong 202 204.

As stronger pilgrims invalidate earlier arrangements, he assumes more of the logistical burden. He recruits Bai Ze and later approves Amitabha’s proposal to have Guanyin delay the travelers while a suitable opponent is found, preserving the required eighty-one trials 210 211 254.

Wutian’s Takeover and Tathagata’s Return

Wutian’s return appears to force Tathagata into reincarnation, leaving Spirit Mountain open to occupation. Xu Tong suspects that the pressure has instead provided an opportunity for a carefully prepared cultivation plan 293 296.

The search for his rebirth produces the uncertain case of Li Goudan, whose resemblance and Buddhist aura do not establish him as the sole true reincarnation. Underworld records reveal that Tathagata has more than one rebirth 322 323 325.

His eventual awakening exposes the full mechanism: the original Tathagata never left Spirit Mountain, and his returning soul fragments complete him. After giving Xu Tong the True Scriptures, he fights and gravely injures Wutian 332 336.

Sagehood and the Western Lands

Tathagata seeks a Heavenly Court position because he believes Spirit Mountain prevents further advancement. His avatar becomes one of the Four Emperors, but Tathagata ultimately finds a way to ascend through Spirit Mountain itself 400 405.

Zhunti and Jieyin then attack to reclaim the Western Lands and their spiritual fortune. Tathagata defeats their combined Land of Ultimate Bliss, rejects a proposal for shared rule, and gravely injures both. He cannot kill them, but the Western Lands’ Fortune transfers entirely to him 414 415 416.

Later-world Buddhist Crisis

The later-world Tathagata holds greater nominal authority than effective control: only about one-fifth of the Buddhist Order is loyal to him, while roughly one-third follows his secret master Mahasthamaprapta. His incomplete mastery of his fruit position also weakens his ability to use his power 632 633.

When Fahai—Xu Tong’s assumed identity—demonstrates the ability to destabilize Buddhist fruit positions, Tathagata treats him as a threat to the Order’s foundations. He sends Tiger-Taming Arhat because the Arhat’s strength comes primarily from personal cultivation rather than bestowed Buddhist authority 636.

Following the Heavenly Court’s assault on the Pure Land, he attempts to recover influence through funeral rites, public preaching, cultivation offers, territorial compromise, and Bodhi Incense 650 652 662 666 667.

Mount Hua Debate and the Six Paths

After cosmic cultivation and an agreement with Hongjun, Tathagata returns to organize Buddhism’s six paths of reincarnation. He instructs Six-Eared Macaque and Golden Sun Wukong to strike the Heavenly Court’s Wukong at a decisive moment 693.

At Mount Hua, he uses compromising information to pressure participants, but Amitabha’s independent movement draws away Xuanzang, Guanyin, many Buddhists, and members of Wutian’s Demon Gate. Tathagata continues despite the schism, presenting Pangu’s Soul-Summoning Banner and an imperial system modeled on the Great Tang and Great Song 699 701 703.

He and Wutian subsequently target Qin Shi Huang’s Mausoleum to seize the Ghost Path, recruiting Qu Yuan and the resurrected Lord Chunshen for the campaign 708.
