Ch. 401Abandoning the mission
Plot points and events
- Kakuzu refuses to take the mission scroll Kakuzu offers, suspecting it could be trapped. Kakuzu has already declared the mission abandoned, so Kakashi lets him leave but remains wary.
- Kakuzu uses a clone’s Wind Release to clear a path through Zabuza’s mist; Zabuza deliberately does little to stop him. Kakashi and Zabuza follow at a distance to make sure Kakuzu does not threaten the Konoha group or Haku.
- Kakuzu finds Hidan badly beaten: his weapon is out of reach, and one arm is frozen in ice. Rather than help him fight, Kakuzu binds him with Earth Grudge Fear threads and announces their retreat.
- Hidan angrily resists, then begs Kakuzu to retrieve his scythe. Kakuzu sends a clone to recover it but leaves Hidan’s frozen arm behind.
- Sasuke prepares to chase the retreating pair, but Kakashi orders him to stop. Sasuke obeys reluctantly. Naruto challenges Kakashi’s decision, arguing that the attackers should be pursued while the Konoha side has the advantage.
Character developments and interactions
- Kakashi remains cautious around Kakuzu, then prioritizes preventing a reckless pursuit. He asserts authority over Sasuke but must answer Naruto’s objection.
- Kakuzu is pragmatic and controlled: he abandons the fight, restrains Hidan, and retrieves only what is necessary for their escape.
- Hidan is furious at losing the fight and initially refuses to retreat; concern for his scythe eventually overrides his defiance.
- Sasuke wants to press the advantage, but stops when Kakashi commands him to.
- Naruto questions Kakashi’s restraint, highlighting the group’s disagreement over whether to pursue.
- Zabuza quietly facilitates Kakuzu’s departure by allowing the mist to be cleared.
