Ch. 161Grab the Loot and Run
Key plot points and events
- Shin Uchiha studies a sealed chamber in Iwagakure’s Tsuchikage Building, knowing Ōnoki is racing back and will arrive within seconds. Rather than destroy the wall, Shin wants to test whether he can open the seal before the Tsuchikage gets there.
- He identifies the seal as an Eight Trigrams Seal combined with a Five Elements variation. Its safeguard is keyed to the caster’s chakra, which Shin correctly guesses is Ōnoki’s Dust Release.
- Using newly acquired Dust Release chakra, Shin disables the safeguard and retrieves a large, old earthen-yellow scroll. He erases the seal and escapes through his dōjutsu before Ōnoki arrives.
- Ōnoki bursts into the empty chamber and finds the scroll, seal, and even the familiar wall pattern gone. Furious at the apparent provocation, he fires a maximum-power Dust Release blast into the wall.
- Back at his mountain vantage point, Shin watches the blast and observes that his Wood Clone fighters have been defeated. The Iwagakure shinobi rush toward the Tsuchikage Building, and Shin makes another hand sign, setting up a new change on the battlefield.
Character developments and interactions
- Shin shows confidence, technical skill, and a taste for psychological mischief. He plans his escape carefully, uses Ōnoki’s pride and chakra signature to overcome the seal, and seems entertained by the Tsuchikage’s reaction.
- Ōnoki is portrayed as proud and fiercely protective of Iwagakure. Discovering the stripped chamber sends him into a rage, and he retaliates against the wall rather than pursuing Shin.
- Iwagakure’s shinobi follow Ōnoki’s urgent orders, defeating the remaining Lightning Release Armor Wood Clone and then rushing to support him.
- Shin and Ōnoki never meet face-to-face, but Shin’s theft and erased seal provoke Ōnoki into a conspicuous show of force.
Significant themes
- Cunning over force: Shin could have destroyed the wall, but instead uses knowledge of sealing and chakra to achieve his goal quietly.
- Pride and provocation: Shin deliberately leaves Ōnoki with an empty chamber, while Ōnoki’s wounded dignity drives his explosive response.
- Deception and misdirection: The clones occupy Iwagakure’s forces while Shin operates elsewhere, and their Wood Clone bodies conceal their true nature.
- Escalating conflict: The scroll’s theft and Shin’s final hand sign suggest that the confrontation is not over.
