Ch. 141Blood Magic
Plot points and events
- Aegon explores the ruined Targaryen stronghold, a vast Valyrian-era castle carved partly into the mountain. The decay and familiar Targaryen sigil make the place feel like a connection to his family’s distant past.
- At the main keep’s entrance, he checks in with the system and receives Valyrian High Blood Magic. The knowledge arrives as a painful flood of visions, runes, rituals, and dragon lore.
- The inheritance includes techniques for binding, strengthening, and healing dragons, but its most significant secret is a forbidden ritual to force dormant or “dead” dragon eggs to hatch using extensive blood offerings and magic.
- The ritual is dangerous and uncertain: an egg may be permanently ruined, and any hatchling is likely to be vicious and difficult to tame.
- Aegon sees this as a possible way to hatch the many ancient, dormant eggs he obtained from Torregar. He leaves the ruins resolved to consider the brutal route to acquiring dragons.
Character developments
- Aegon shifts from having no clear plan for his dormant eggs to possessing a concrete—if costly and risky—means of hatching them. He accepts the danger and moral darkness of the method as consistent with the perilous path he has already taken.
- His reaction to the inheritance is not horror or hesitation but cold determination, suggesting that power and the chance to reshape the balance of the world outweigh his concern for the price.
- King Ghidorah remains outside as Aegon’s watchful guard.
Significant themes
- Power and sacrifice: The ritual offers extraordinary power at the cost of blood, resources, and potentially the eggs themselves.
- Forbidden knowledge and moral compromise: Aegon gains a tool that violates the natural order and carries an inherent stain of cruelty and madness.
- Legacy and inheritance: The ruins and blood magic connect Aegon to the ancient Targaryen Dragonlords, while giving him a chance to revive their age of dragons.
- Risk and ambition: Aegon treats danger as an unavoidable part of pursuing his goals.
Character interactions
- Aegon orders King Ghidorah to wait outside; the dragon complies and keeps watch.
- Aegon interacts with the system to check in and receive the blood-magic inheritance. The chapter otherwise centers on his solitary exploration, his confrontation with the knowledge, and his decision about what it might make possible.
