A few days later, Son Goku, Yamcha, Krillin, and Master Roshi, disguised as Jackie Chun, successfully made it into the quarterfinals.
Then, just as in the original story, all four defeated their opponents and advanced to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Son Goku defeated Krillin, while Jackie Chun defeated Yamcha, bringing the two of them together in the final.
In the final, Son Goku easily defeated Jackie Chun and won the twenty-first World Martial Arts Tournament.
After treating everyone to a huge meal, Son Goku spent every last bit of his newly won prize money in the blink of an eye.
Son Goku's response was, "I'm not interested in money."
Afterward, Master Roshi and Krillin returned to Immortal Island, Bulma went home, and Son Goku returned to Mount Paozu to continue training.
After training on Mount Paozu for several months, Son Goku set off once again in search of the Dragon Balls.
A month later, having gathered all seven Dragon Balls, Son Goku wished for Shenron to grant him the ability to survive in space. Naturally, this wish posed no difficulty for Shenron.
Once his wish had been granted, Son Goku took a moment to feel the changes in his body, then went to Korin Tower to visit Korin.
Korin was delighted to see Son Goku. After giving Korin a large vat of live fish, Son Goku planned to drink the Ultra Divine Water to unlock his potential.
Although the Ultra Divine Water was poisonous and might cause heart disease, Son Goku still intended to give it a try. At worst, he could simply wish for Shenron to remove the toxins from his body when the time came.
Korin tried to talk him out of it, but when he saw that Son Goku was determined to drink it, he agreed.
After drinking a cup of Ultra Divine Water, Son Goku immediately felt unbearable pain throughout his body. His energy erupted involuntarily, and violent winds, torrential rain, and thunder and lightning swept through the area below Korin Tower. Korin was stunned by the energy pouring from Son Goku.
Kami, up at Kami's Lookout, was equally shocked.
A short while later, Son Goku recovered and reined in his energy. Feeling the vigorous power coursing through his body, he was overjoyed. By his rough estimate, his strength had increased by nearly a third.
After thanking Korin, Son Goku prepared to leave, only for Korin to tell him that Kami wanted to see him.
So Son Goku flew toward Kami's Lookout.
A short while later, Son Goku arrived at Kami's Lookout, where he saw a man who looked Indian and a strange green-skinned man.
Of course, Son Goku knew that these two were Mr. Popo and Kami, but he pretended not to recognize them and asked, "Hello, which of you is Kami?"
The green-skinned man said, "I am Kami. Beside me is my servant, Mr. Popo."
Son Goku replied, "Hello, Kami. Hello, Mr. Popo. What did you want to see me about?"
Kami said, "Just now, here at the Lookout, I sensed the energy you released and realized that your strength had surpassed everyone else's. That is why I wish to invite you to succeed me as Kami, maintain world peace, and protect Earth."
Son Goku said, "I'm sorry, Lord Kami, but I like being free and having no restraints. I don't want to be tied down. Please understand."
Kami said, "Goku, won't you reconsider? I have a premonition that a demon will soon appear and threaten humanity. Earth's martial artists will be powerless against him. Only you will be able to save Earth and preserve world peace."
Son Goku said, "Don't worry, Lord Kami. I'll step in when the time comes, but you'll have to find someone else to take your position!"
Hearing this, Kami stopped trying to force Son Goku to take his position and said to him, "Very well, young man. I leave the task of protecting Earth and maintaining world peace to you. If there is anything you need, you may ask me."
Son Goku said, "Is there anywhere here at Kami's Lookout where I can train? I'd like to continue my training."
Kami replied, "There is a place here called the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. However, its gravity is ten times that of the outside world. A year spent inside is only a day outside, but its environment is extremely harsh. I don't know whether you will be able to adapt."
Son Goku said, "That's perfect. Ten times gravity won't be a problem."
Kami agreed and had Mr. Popo lead Son Goku into the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, warning him that he could only stay inside for two years. Otherwise, he would never be able to get out.
Son Goku nodded in agreement, set the gravity on his weighted clothing to zero, and only then entered the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
The instant he stepped inside, Son Goku's body sank, and he nearly fell over. After steadying himself, he began training.
Besides basic training, Son Goku also began taking advantage of his Saiyan traits. Every few days, he injured himself, then ate a Senzu Bean to recover, causing his power level to soar.
After spending two years inside this way, Son Goku left the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and began adjusting the gravity multiplier on his weighted clothing.
He started at normal gravity and increased it until he reached twenty times gravity. Only then did Son Goku feel it was about right and stop adjusting it. Although he did not know his exact power level, Son Goku in the original story had reached a power level of ninety thousand after adapting to a hundred times gravity. Since he could now handle twenty times gravity, he estimated that his power level was around eighteen thousand.
Delighted by this thought, Son Goku said goodbye to Kami and Mr. Popo and left Kami's Lookout. He visited Korin again on his way past Korin Tower, then headed straight back to Mount Paozu.
Three years later, the twenty-second World Martial Arts Tournament took place as scheduled.
After saying goodbye to Son Gohan, Son Goku hurried off to compete in the tournament. There, he saw not only Master Roshi, Krillin, Yamcha, and Bulma, but also Tien Shinhan, Chiaotzu, and Master Shen of the Crane School.
In the end, Son Goku won the World Martial Arts Tournament without any suspense.
After receiving his prize money, Son Goku invited everyone out for a meal. During that time, one of King Piccolo's underlings tried to steal the Four-Star Dragon Ball, but Son Goku dealt with him effortlessly, allowing Krillin to escape disaster as well.
After the meal, Son Goku sought out the original King Piccolo and beat him until he was gravely injured and on the verge of death, allowing him to spit out a Demon Egg.
Then Son Goku returned to Mount Paozu.
Afterward, Son Goku obtained Kami's spaceship and asked Bulma's father to help repair it. Dr. Brief agreed without hesitation.
Son Goku used this time to gather the Dragon Balls, then wished for Shenron to teach him the Namekian language.
Once Dr. Brief had repaired the spaceship, Son Goku took it to Planet Namek.
A month later, Son Goku arrived on Planet Namek. After asking around, he found the Grand Elder's home.
Nail welcomed him and brought him to meet the Grand Elder, whom Son Goku then told why he had come.
While unlocking Son Goku's potential, the Grand Elder learned what would happen to Planet Namek in the future. He asked Son Goku to come to Planet Namek's aid when the time came, and Son Goku readily agreed.
Afterward, the Grand Elder ordered his people to gather the seven Dragon Balls and helped Son Goku make his wishes.
Son Goku's first wish was to learn the Yardratians' Instant Transmission.
His second wish was to remove the remaining toxins from the Ultra Divine Water from his body.
His third wish was to master the method of cultivating divine power.
All three wishes were quite simple for Porunga, and he granted them in moments.
Son Goku felt many new training methods appear in his mind, while his body felt lighter and more at ease. He knew that his wishes had been granted.
Then he said goodbye to the Grand Elder and returned to Earth aboard the spaceship.
