Background / History
Abandonment and family betrayal
Tang Tang is the biological daughter of Tang Beichen and Su Xiajing. At birth, her paternal grandfather, Tang Zhilin, ordered her abandonment after a fortune-teller declared that she would bring disaster to the family. A sanitation worker found her and saved her life. She later learned that the story blaming a hospital doctor for switching and abandoning her was false 1 141.
Su Xiajing never accepted that her missing daughter was dead. Her grief and declining health developed into a severe mental breakdown. Tang Zhilin subsequently brought Tang Yue into the household as an adopted daughter. Tang Beichen began an affair with Su Xiajing’s sister, Su Chuchu, who eventually became his wife. Tang Tang’s post-death vision revealed that Tang Yue was Su Chuchu’s biological daughter 141.
Returning to the wealthy Tang household did not give Tang Tang a sense of belonging. She felt that the house and everything in it belonged to her father, while most relatives treated her as an outsider. Tang Ziyang was the notable exception among her cousins 38 138 139.
Earlier lives
Each rebirth initially returned Tang Tang to an earlier point in her life rather than to infancy. Across her first ten lives, she never survived to twenty-seven 20 145 147 148 151.
| Life | Documented experiences | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| First | Returns to the Tang family but feels alienated. Seeks photographs of her deceased mother and considers returning to school to escape the household 138 139. | After death, sees the truth behind her abandonment and her parents’ marriage 141. |
| Second | Awakens a year earlier in her rented apartment, retaining the revelations from her first death 141. | Dies young before her next rebirth 145. |
| Third | Returns at twenty-three. Learns from Su Zhihao, studies accounting, enters the Tang company, and builds professional connections to compete for the inheritance 145 146. | Drugged by Tang Yue’s fiancé and an accomplice; dies at twenty-four after falling down a stairwell while escaping their planned compromising recording 146. |
| Fourth | Returns at twenty-one. Studies for an accounting certification, exercises, and conceals her ambitions while preparing to turn Tang Yue and Tang Shengwang against each other 147. | Dies before twenty-four when an amusement-park pendulum ride crashes 1 147. |
| Fifth | Returns at twenty. Abandons revenge, avoids the Tang family, and plans to live in her adoptive family’s rural hometown 148. | Dies at twenty-one when the minibus carrying her home crashes into a ravine 1 148. |
| Sixth | Returns at nineteen and searches books, online communities, temples, and monasteries for an explanation of her repeated rebirths 149. | Her research does not produce an explanation 149. |
| Ninth | Encounters Taoist Master Yunlong at White Cloud Temple and begins returning for quiet companionship. Meets his lay disciple, Chu Yun 150 151. | Yunlong intervenes in her suicidal despair; the temple and Chu Yun provide moments of ordinary enjoyment 151. |
| Tenth | Returns while in eighth grade. Tells her adoptive parents about her previous lives, leaves school, grows vegetables at the temple, volunteers, and recites scriptures 151. | Collapses and reaches the hospital. When Yunlong asks whether she wants to live, she finally acknowledges that she does 151. |
Yunlong’s intervention
Repeated deaths gradually changed Tang Tang’s goal from revenge to survival, and eventually to finding a way to stop reincarnating. Yunlong was the first spiritual teacher she encountered who understood her predicament. She credits him with making her final two earlier lives comparatively peaceful 20 148 150 151.
Although she calls him “Master,” he repeatedly refuses to formally accept her as a disciple in her latest life. At the finale, Yunlong acknowledges his involvement in her repeated rebirths. Tang Tang does not blame him; she thanks him for saving her and allowing her to return to her loved ones 99 100 152.
Appearance
Tang Tang strongly resembles Su Xiajing. As a baby, relatives praise her bright eyes and unusually lively appearance; at five, Tang Xia describes her as a delicate, adorable child resembling a porcelain doll 58 72.
- Bright eyes — singled out by Tang Shengying when Tang Tang is barely over two months old 58.
- Chubby infant hands and feet — frequently used to grab relatives’ fingers, pat faces, and protest 12 39 54.
- Resemblance to her mother — pronounced enough that she wears a mask in her fifth life to avoid recognition through photographs or videos 148.
Personality
Tang Tang’s outward quietness conceals a blunt, sarcastic inner voice. She ridicules relatives, gives her cousins embarrassing nicknames, and openly rejects the authority of the grandfather responsible for her abandonment. As an infant, she is also comically vain, reasoning that everyone should appreciate the opportunity to hold her 16 43 133.
She likes gold, valuable gifts, good-looking people, sleep, and an undemanding routine. Her affection for Tang Xianqi includes both admiration for his kindness and appreciation of the diamond watch he gives her. She resists noisy gatherings and unwanted activities, sometimes pretending to sleep or hiding her physical development to avoid expectations 12 15 30 64.
Her apparent laziness and detachment coexist with considerable persistence. She studies and builds connections when pursuing the Tang inheritance, searches for spiritual answers after repeated deaths, and spends months trying to locate her former adoptive family. Tang Xiancheng eventually recognizes that she is not incapable of socializing: she is often simply uninterested, while becoming warm and persuasive around people she deeply loves 145 146 149 68 71 76.
Tang Tang is especially protective of Su Xiajing. Despite believing herself emotionally numb after ten lives, spending time with her mother strengthens both her affection and her anger at those who hurt her 22 34.
Repeated early deaths leave her reluctant to trust happiness or believe she has a right to survive. Her latest family’s affection gradually challenges that belief: she comes to miss her cousins’ company, enjoys being her mother’s daughter, and ultimately expresses relief that she has not died 98 99 101 152.
