Background / History

Childhood and acting career

Su Xiajing lost her mother when she was young. After Su Jiansen remarried, his work and the birth of her younger half-brother, Su Zhihao, left her increasingly neglected. Her stepmother, Wei Shufen, behaved differently in public and behind closed doors, while both Wei Shufen and Su Chuchu neglected or bullied her 5 34 137.

Xiajing entered the entertainment industry against her family’s wishes and began earning her own money while still attending school. After becoming a successful actress, she again defied opposition by retiring to marry Tang Beichen and have their child 5 15 51.

Fate in Tang Tang’s previous lives

In the earlier timeline, the Tang family patriarch arranged for newborn Tang Tang to be taken away. Xiajing was told her daughter had died, but insisted that the dead child was not hers. Even after a DNA test identified the child as Tang Tang, she demanded that the police be contacted; the family dismissed her objections as trauma 1 141.

Her health and mental state deteriorated after the loss. During lucid periods, she requested a divorce because she did not want to burden Beichen, but he refused. The family later brought home Tang Yue as an adopted daughter, temporarily helping Xiajing stabilize and cooperate with treatment. Tang Yue was actually Su Chuchu’s biological child 141.

Discovering Beichen’s affair with Chuchu became the final blow, and Xiajing died by suicide. In Tang Tang’s first life, Su Zhihao eventually told her about her mother and showed her photographs and recordings. Tang Tang repeatedly visited Xiajing’s grave at South Mountain Cemetery in later lives 137 138 141 148 150.

Protecting Tang Tang and ending the marriage

Tang Tang’s eleventh life begins at birth, while Xiajing is still alive. Xiajing wakes as the nanny and butler are about to remove her daughter, hears Tang Tang’s thoughts, and interrupts them. The baby’s warnings and Xiajing’s own visions of their suffering make her distrust the Tang household 1 2 5.

Immediately after childbirth, she asks Zhang Zhang to find a divorce lawyer and leaves the hospital for her own apartment rather than returning to Beichen’s home. She initially bars Tang-family visitors and remains guarded even toward relatives who may have known nothing about the abandonment attempt 3 4 9.

As Tang Tang’s thoughts identify Su Chuchu’s role in the remembered betrayal, Xiajing presses ahead with separation. She gives Beichen a new agreement and a one-week deadline. Both eventually sign a revised agreement transferring his assets to her, with finalization delayed until after his grandmother’s ninetieth birthday 33 37. Their divorce is confirmed in subsequent chapters 49 51.

After discovering that they can both hear Tang Tang’s thoughts, the former spouses discuss the previous lives openly. Xiajing refuses reconciliation: she cannot forget what happened or trust that Beichen would remain faithful under different circumstances. She nevertheless accepts shared responsibility for protecting their daughter 55 56.

Return to acting and production work

When Tang Tang is ten months old, Xiajing returns to acting and brings her daughter and Sister Wang to the set. Filming proves exhausting, and the hotel cannot provide the comfort of home. After completing the film, she retires again, citing her physical inability to cope 68.

She then starts a film and television company with Zhang Zhang, intending to remain an investor and spend more time with Tang Tang. A successful film makes the company prominent within two years. Expansion into further productions and talent management draws Xiajing into daily executive work, leaving her busier than she had been as an actress 68.

Despite Su Jiansen’s attempts to make amends, she declines his help, including assistance with starting the company. Their relationship remains strained years after her divorce 85.

Supporting Tang Tang’s other family

Xiajing accepts Tang Tang’s bond with Tang Xia, Xiao Wangqing, and Xiao Xiang, whom her daughter knows as family from previous lives. She becomes Xiao Xiang’s godmother and recommends him for a child acting role 82 84 110.

She handles the practical responsibilities Tang Tang tries to shoulder herself: explaining Xiao Xiang’s 300,000-yuan contract, arranging tutoring, and organizing a pre-filming examination. The examination discovers an early-stage benign tumor; Xiajing arranges surgery and helps provide a place for his recovery 83 85.

Her support also extends to the adults. She coordinates with Beichen about employment opportunities, encourages Tang Xia to consider a new career, and helps her prepare for an interview. Later, she brings the families together for New Year celebrations 110 114 115 118 124.

Rebuilding emotional closeness

Xiajing becomes troubled by Tang Tang’s tendency to treat maternal care as a debt. Rather than merely waiting for her daughter to become more trusting, she explains that Tang Tang may rely on her, ask for things, and enjoy a child’s privileges without repaying every act of care 115 116 117.

Their filming trip with Xiao Xiang becomes a family holiday as well as a work visit. During the trip, Tang Tang overcomes her discomfort with open affection and says, “Mommy, I love you.” Xiajing responds with an embrace and returns the sentiment 117 120.

Coma and finale

Xiajing continues caring for Tang Tang during a ten-year coma. When the family dreams of Tang Tang’s previous lives, she refuses Beichen’s help and continues massaging her daughter’s hands and feet. She rushes to greet Taoist Master Yunlong when he arrives and weeps when Tang Tang finally wakes 152.

By the finale, Xiajing and Lu Hengyuan are officially dating; he has remained by her side for ten years. She also helps Tang Xia and Xiao Wangqing establish their own shop. After Tang Tang awakens, Xiajing can no longer hear her thoughts and must rely on trust rather than supernatural insight 152.

Appearance

  • Striking beauty and elegance: Her appearance impresses Xiao Xiang, Tang Xia, and Lu Hengyuan; Tang Tang is captivated by her old production photographs 80 82 84 137.
  • Strong resemblance to Tang Tang: Su Zhihao and Xiao Xiang both remark on their likeness. In earlier lives, Tang Tang wears a mask partly to avoid being recognized as Xiajing’s lookalike 80 137 148.
  • Slender fingers: Described while she adjusts Tang Tang’s gold Longevity Lock 4.

Personality

Xiajing is stubborn and independent. Her decisions to enter acting, leave her successful career for marriage, and later pursue divorce all withstand opposition. She rejects the expectation that she must preserve the marriage or present herself primarily as the Tang family’s daughter-in-law 5 10 45.

Her protectiveness includes emotional care as well as physical safety. She wants Tang Tang to be carefree rather than prematurely responsible, supports her interests, and notices when gratitude conceals distance. Although she respects her daughter’s independence, she worries about Tang Tang withdrawing from other people and tries to strengthen her attachment to everyday life 46 101 106 116 117.

She also shows tact toward people uncomfortable accepting help. While shopping with Tang Xia, she chooses stores suited to Tang Xia’s budget and buys clothes alongside her, making the kindness easier to accept 121.
