Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Ghost Fire ingestion 134 Removes the fire-bearing heart from Li Jun’s corpse and swallows it, attempting to acquire Ghost Fire. This does not immediately establish control.
Temporary Ghost Fire containment 139 Uses the Substitute Death Ghost to transfer damage and continually restore his burning body. Privately recognizes that the containment could fail if the fire overwhelms it.
Water Ghost integration attempt 146 Cuts open his arms, replaces his blood with paranormal lake water, and absorbs the purer Dead Water Core from Lin Shan’s corpse. His nature as a Different Kind lets him survive the process.
Stable three-power balance 147 The Substitute Death Ghost mediates between Water Ghost Blood and Ghost Fire. Ye Zhen emerges markedly stronger, with a yellow-green Ghost Domain incorporating Ghost Fire.

Appearance

Ye Zhen is introduced as a young man whose golden radiance pushes back the darkness around No. 7 Middle School 8.

  • Trench coat: Wears an expensive vintage trench coat and becomes furious when Yang Wudi’s spear damages it 10.
  • Battle attire: Also appears in a black battle robe and, during the Forum’s mobilization, a dramatic cape and bamboo hat 14 112.
  • Theatrical poses: Frequently rests a hand on his sword, raises his chin, or lets his cape flutter without wind 11 154.
  • Paranormal effects: During his unstable Ghost Fire acquisition, green flames pour from his eyes, ears, mouth, and nose. After achieving balance, he can draw those flames back into his body 139 147.

Personality

Ye Zhen is flamboyant, vain, and intensely competitive. He treats Yang Wudi’s name—meaning “invincible”—as a personal challenge and attacks him for daring to claim it. His desire to look impressive also drives genuine combat decisions: he seeks Ghost Fire partly because he imagines how striking a flame-wreathed sword would look 8 134.

Praise readily wins him over. Zhang Wei’s admiration turns his anger into enthusiasm, leading to an unconventional brotherhood. Beneath the grandstanding, he is fiercely protective of his companions: Yang Jian considers him reliable when it matters, and later entrusts both his own body and Lin Cheng’s life to him 14 15 145 177.

His judgment is uneven rather than uniformly foolish. He misreads the Ancient Sword’s awakening and initially tries to identify supernatural copies through shared memories, yet devises a useful safeguard for Feng Quan’s failing identity and cooperates in a calculated attack on Yang Jian’s impostor. He can also restrain himself when reckless action would endanger an ally 10 113 153 156 237.

After controlling Ghost Fire and Dead Water, Ye Zhen notices that his capacity for ordinary human compassion is fading. His loyalty remains strong, but his increasing emotional numbness exposes the cost of his supernatural development 177.

Abilities & Skills

Substitute Death Ghost

The Substitute Death Ghost transfers fatal attacks and damage to Ye Zhen’s figurines, allowing him to survive injuries that would ordinarily kill him 123 124.

  • Survives having his heart pierced by Yang Wudi’s Soul Breaking Spear 8 10.
  • Reverses the corpse changes inflicted by the Knocking Ghost’s attack 13.
  • Transfers corrosive ghost-smoke damage to figurines, which burn and melt in his place 123.
  • Substitutes a figurine for his death when Li Leping’s Ghost-Finding Ghost snaps his neck 124.
  • Limit: Li Leping’s layered assault destroys four figurines simultaneously and still leaves Ye Zhen seriously injured; death substitution is not absolute protection 124.

Ghost Domain

Ye Zhen’s original Ghost Domain manifests as golden light and can contest other paranormal domains 9 13.

  • Instantly transports a group across half of Dachang City to the Paranormal Forum headquarters 15.
  • After his three-power balance, becomes yellow-green and carries water-and-fire paranormal power 147 158.
  • Works alongside Yang Jian’s five-layer Ghost Domain to push against the Ghost Messenger’s black barrier 147.
  • Limit: The Ghost Messenger’s domain suppresses paranormal powers and makes even his Substitute Death Ghost operate sluggishly 139.

Paranormal Punches and Physical Exorcism

Ye Zhen channels paranormal force through direct physical blows. He calls one casual strike an application of his “Prison-Suppressing Technique,” though no separate mechanism for that named technique is documented 14.

  • Suppresses Yang Wudi’s level-82 soul power on contact and caves in his chest with one punch 8.
  • Crushes the Knocking Ghost’s skull and interrupts its knocking attack without drawing his sword 13.
  • Beats the awakening entity within his sword back into dormancy with two punches 10.
  • Previously subdues the Name-Carving Ghost and seals it in a buried gold coffin 66.
  • Limit: Severe bodily damage does not necessarily suppress a powerful Ghost Handler; Li Leping restores his crushed chest immediately 123.

Ghost Fire and Water Ghost Blood

Ghost Fire resides at Ye Zhen’s heart, while paranormal dead water circulates through his veins. The Substitute Death Ghost acts as the vessel maintaining their balance 147.

  • Combines water and fire around his sword to deliver an attack carrying both ghosts’ suppression 156.
  • Uses Ghost Fire as a sheath around the Ancient Sword without releasing its certain-death curse 177.
  • Withstands a Ghost Bride contact attack through Ghost Fire’s suppression followed by death substitution 231.
  • Cost: His acquisition nearly kills him, and continued control erodes his humanity 145 146 177.

Tactical Observation

Despite his preference for overwhelming force, Ye Zhen sometimes exploits supernatural rules rather than simply ignoring them.

  • Advises Feng Quan to wear conspicuous clothing printed with his name, encouraging others to say it and reinforce his endangered identity 113.
  • Coordinates a feigned confrontation with Yang Jian to make a copied Yang Jian lower his guard 156.
  • Accepts Yue Yan’an’s warning not to attack Renxin’s duplicates while Yang Jian is vulnerable 237.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Ancient Sword / Certain-Death Sword: A paranormal weapon whose rules make touching it fatal and looking at it trigger a tearing attack. Yang Wudi dies after glancing at its hilt. Its effect reaches viewers through the Sky Screen before the screen’s laws interrupt it 10 11.
    • Li Leping survives its attack by using the Forgetting Ghost to erase the fact that he was injured 124.
    • Ye Zhen keeps its paranormal activity dormant through force and later surrounds it with Ghost Fire 10 177.
  • Figurines: Serve as substitutes that receive his damage or death; multiple figurines are destroyed during his fight with Li Leping 123 124.
  • Custom earpiece: Connects him to Lin Cheng and Forum operations. Its ordinary, non-paranormal nature becomes important when distinguishing Yang Jian from a supernatural copy 12 112 156.
  • Ghost Flower: Collects the dormant black flower after learning that its illusions had made him repeatedly punch empty air 67.

History / Major Arcs

No. 7 Middle School

Lin Cheng sends Ye Zhen to help Yang Jian contain the Knocking Ghost. Ye Zhen objects to the idea of teaming up, insisting that he and his sword can defeat any enemy alone 6.

At the school, he encounters the fleeing Yang Wudi and attacks him over his name. Yang Wudi retaliates by piercing his heart, but Ye Zhen remains standing. He then exposes the Ancient Sword, killing Yang Wudi through its gaze-triggered rule. The same weapon threatens the Douluo Continent’s viewers, with Chen Xin suffering severe backlash before the Sky Screen cuts off the attack 8 10 11.

Ye Zhen nearly fights Yang Jian until Lin Cheng intervenes. He subsequently overpowers the Knocking Ghost, but fails to contain it before it recovers and escapes. Lin Cheng suspects outside interference, while Ye Zhen claims the ghost fled in fear 12 13.

After killing Fang Jing, Ye Zhen bonds with Zhang Wei through mutual praise. He transports the group back to the Forum and later guides newcomers through the Ghost Mirror’s resurrection system, punching back a ghostly hand that tries to drag Ning Rongrong inside 14 15 17.

Fushou Garden

Ye Zhen claims Fushou Garden cemetery as his territory and reports subduing supernatural entities buried there. He also recounts failing to control a luck ghost, which became dormant after Zhang Wei drew it into a game 65.

When Lin Cheng visits, Ye Zhen retrieves the buried Name-Carving Ghost and asks to borrow the Coffin Nail to address A Wu’s approaching ghost revival. Luo Qian later offers him an inheritance of grave soil, but Ye Zhen refuses 66 67.

Dajing City and the Training-Base Crisis

After receiving Lin Cheng’s highest-tier order to destroy the Circle of Friends, Ye Zhen assembles the Dahai branch’s Ghost Handlers. In Dajing City, he joins Yang Jian’s confrontation with Headquarters captains and battles Li Leping, escalating from punches to the Ancient Sword. Li Leping’s combination of concealment, lethal targeting, and oblivion inflicts unusually severe damage on him 112 113 119 123 124.

Ye Zhen then pursues Ghost Fire from Li Jun’s corpse and swallows its source. Unable to establish lasting control, he demands Lin Shan’s Water Ghost. The confrontation leaves Lin Shan dead and Ye Zhen trapped beneath a paranormal lake, close to losing consciousness 134 139 140 145.

Yang Jian’s Ghost Dream restores his focus. Ye Zhen asks him to withdraw the Fierce Dog, then deliberately absorbs the Water Ghost’s source. He emerges with a stable balance of death substitution, dead water, and Ghost Fire, and immediately cooperates with Yang Jian against the Ghost Messenger’s domain 145 146 147.

Wish-Granting Ghost and the Ruined City

Ye Zhen recognizes the Wish-Granting Ghost as an intelligent S-rank threat capable of long-range rewinding, recalling an earlier encounter alongside Lin Cheng. He helps Yang Jian strike an impostor, but the ghost’s ultimate target proves to be Ye Zhen himself. A duplicate gains his powers, death-substitution rules, and thought patterns, leaving the two unable to kill one another 153 156 158.

Later, Ye Zhen guards Yang Jian, Lin Cheng, and Zhang Lei during their consciousness struggle on a rooftop in ruined Dajing City. He blocks Yue Yan’an from approaching them and treats even her gaze as a possible attack. Afterward, Lin Cheng assigns her to Ye Zhen’s team 177 185 186.

Convoy and Ghost Bride Operation

Ye Zhen protects A Wu’s convoy while Lin Cheng is away. A Wu finds his theatrics exasperating but recognizes that his confidence reassures those traveling through the apocalypse 208.

During the Ghost Bride operation, Ye Zhen survives a certain-death contact attack and later holds back against Renxin’s duplicates to avoid endangering Yang Jian. After the mission, he leaves with Zhang Wei to catch up on anime, telling Yang Jian to contact him if needed 231 237 241.

Relationships

  • Lin Cheng — Superior and trusted ally. Lin stops his confrontation with Yang Jian, directs his missions, and later places Yue Yan’an on his team. Ye Zhen trusts Lin to handle major threats while pursuing Ghost Fire 12 112 134 186.
  • Yang Jian — Rival turned dependable combat partner. Ye Zhen calls him “Little Yang”; their early hostility develops into rescue, coordinated deception, and responsibility for one another’s lives 12 145 146 156 177.
  • Zhang Wei — Close friend and self-declared brother. They agree that Zhang Wei will call him “Big Brother” publicly, while Ye Zhen calls Zhang Wei “Brother Wei” privately 15. They continue sharing theatrical praise and leave together after missions 120 241.
  • A Wu — Forum colleague and operational partner. Ye Zhen seeks help for A Wu’s ghost revival, while A Wu manages deployment and warns him about convoy dangers 66 113 208.
  • Yue Yan’an — Initially a suspicious stranger, later his assigned teammate. Her caution helps prevent a dangerous attack during Yang Jian’s vulnerable merger 177 186 237.
  • Feng Quan — Fellow Forum combatant whom Ye Zhen helps resist supernatural identity loss through a name-bearing cape 113.
  • Ning Rongrong — Newcomer whom he transports and guides through the Ghost Mirror; he protects her when her reflection attacks 15 17.
  • Luo Qian — Cemetery master who offers him the grave-soil inheritance. Ye Zhen declines 67.
