Background / History

Zhang Wei and Yang Jian have known each other since childhood. Zhang Wei initially considered Yang Jian too quiet and boring, but after the paranormal resurgence he came to admire him and dreamed of fighting beside him like a martial-arts hero 210.

During the No. 7 Middle School disaster, Zhang Wei is trapped in a classroom with surviving students. His attempt to reassure them ends with a joke about starving to death. When Yang Jian arrives, he clings to his leg in tearful relief; Yang Jian subsequently evacuates him and the others through his Ghost Domain 9 10.

After leaving the school, Zhang Wei befriends Ye Zhen through enthusiastic praise. He turns an offer to become Ye Zhen’s underling into a brotherhood arrangement, calling him “Big Brother” publicly while asking to be called “Brother Wei” privately. Yang Jian tolerates the arrangement because Ye Zhen’s strength and protectiveness could keep Zhang Wei safe 14 15.

Appearance

Zhang Wei favors conspicuous clothing and accessories, including a sequined jacket, flashy sunglasses, and a thick gold chain 193 224.

  • Carries two solid-gold Desert Eagles and a special card case 193.
  • Wears a crystal Deceiving Ghost necklace before it is destroyed in the Sword Dojo 193 208.
  • Later wears a uniform bearing the Paranormal Forum’s emblem 224.
  • After his transformation, transparent sword light briefly flashes through his eyes, and his chest wound disappears without leaving a scar 215.

Personality

Zhang Wei is irreverent, boastful, and shamelessly theatrical. He cracks bleak jokes during emergencies, gives himself grandiose titles, and trades extravagant compliments with Ye Zhen even during dangerous standoffs. His flattery is also practical: it wins Ye Zhen’s friendship, protection, and a promise of collectible figurines 9 15 46 120.

His bravado does not mean he never feels fear. He panics when he believes he has been struck by lethal sword energy and experiences lingering terror after escaping supernatural marriage restraints. Once he realizes he has survived, however, fear quickly gives way to insults and defiance 208 233.

Beneath his clowning, Zhang Wei is loyal and wants to be useful. He stops a robber before answering a Forum deployment order, helps remind Feng Quan of his identity, and shields Yang Jian from the Asura God’s attack without hesitation. At the brink of death, he speaks sincerely about how much their adventures have meant to him 113 210 215.

His ghosts increasingly influence his behavior. Lin Cheng notices the Luck Ghost subtly altering him, and Zhang Wei later admits that he has begun lying compulsively. Becoming a Different Kind removes the threat of revival, but not these changes to his personality 187 224.

Abilities & Skills

Luck Ghost

  • Probability-based protection: Paranormal threats repeatedly miss or avoid him through improbable circumstances. In ruined Dajing City, he wanders through dangerous locations unharmed 176.
  • Attack diversion: His luck redirects Chen Xin’s sword energy onto the Deceiving Ghost necklace rather than his body 208.
  • Luck Ghost Domain: Can cover an entire city; he extends it over Dajing City to support Lin Cheng 176.
  • Power amplification: Strengthens the Deceiving Ghost, reducing the rigorous logic previously needed to distort reality 204.
  • Dangerous gambles: When the Ghost Sword’s strike appears unavoidable, the Luck Ghost steers events toward an extremely unlikely survival outcome rather than a successful dodge 213.
  • Nonhuman priorities: Lin Cheng suspects it drew Zhang Wei toward the cursed love letter because a powerful supernatural source represented good fortune for the ghost, not necessarily safety for its host 225.

Deceiving Ghost

Initially used through a supernatural necklace, the Deceiving Ghost later becomes part of Zhang Wei’s internal supernatural balance 193 213 224.

  • Reality distortion: His theatrical “Buddha’s Palm” causes a real granite mountain, roughly the size of a small car, to fall onto Zhang Long 204.
  • Physical restoration: Removes corpse spots and repairs rotting flesh after Zhang Wei escapes the Marriage Document’s control 233.
  • Curse reversal: His claim that Renxin never touched him becomes reality, undoing the Ghost Glove’s attempt to turn him into a Ghost Slave 237.
  • Persuasive influence: Combined with the Luck Ghost’s charm, it helps make his exaggerated claims convincing to an ordinary woman 224.
  • Behavioral cost: Its influence contributes to his compulsive lying 224.

Ghost Sword Fusion and Different Kind State

  • Living scabbard: The Deceiving Ghost makes the Ghost Sword mistake Zhang Wei’s body for a replacement scabbard, allowing it to merge with his stopped heart 213.
  • Revival-free balance: After awakening, he no longer needs to fear his Vengeful Ghost reawakening 215.
  • Belief-linked defense: His taunt causes the Asura God to doubt whether his attack can hurt him. The Asura Blood Sword turns into cotton on impact, leaving Zhang Wei untouched 215 216.
  • Combined supernatural force: The Ghost Sword and Luck Ghost reinforce his Deceiving Ghost when he negates Renxin’s curse 237.
  • Paranormal striking power: The gust from an otherwise undisciplined punch cuts Renxin’s cheek 239.
  • Limits: His unusual balance makes him exceptionally difficult to kill, but does not prevent supernatural captivity or distorted consciousness 225 232 233.

Ghost Cards

  • Uses cards supplied by Yang Jian to obtain temporary supernatural effects 109 128.
  • The Spring-Loaded Clown Ghost Card assists him during his repeated clashes with Li Jun; its ten-minute effect eventually expires 123 128.
  • A later, unnamed card releases a powerful repulsive force when Renxin’s Ghost Glove approaches him 239.
  • Draws are hazardous: previous users have experienced instant death, supernatural outbreaks, or brief protection. Yang Jian chooses the item specifically because Zhang Wei’s luck makes him suited to its risks 109.

Firearms and Improvisation

  • Expertly spins and handles his paired golden pistols, although “greatest sharpshooter” is his own claim 46.
  • Kills Wang Yue immediately after surviving his supernatural rope attack 53.
  • Fires at Zhang Han; the Tattoo Ghost blocks the bullet, but fragments still cut Zhang Han’s face 53.
  • Runs out of ammunition during the Cockroach Club confrontation 53.
  • Uses role-play and provocation to exploit an opponent’s behavior, most notably by answering Zhang Long’s Sun Wukong delusion with a Buddha persona 204.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Two golden Desert Eagles — Solid-gold pistols used with special bullets against Ghost Handlers 53 119 193.
  • Ghost Cards and card case — Drawn from a box given to him by Yang Jian; the case is worn at his waist 128 193.
  • Crystal Deceiving Ghost necklace — Made by Yang Jian following Lin Cheng’s suggestion. Destroyed when Chen Xin’s sword energy absorbs the ghost inside it 193 208.
  • Ghost Sword — Fuses with his heart rather than remaining a separately carried weapon 213 215.
  • Custom earpiece — Receives mission orders and later provides Yang Jian and Ye Zhen with a means of tracking him when he disappears 113 225.
  • Blood-red love letter — Found in ruined Dajing City and addressed to someone named Zhang Wei. Later identified by Yang Jian as an anchor for a dangerous curse 176 225.

Relationships

  • Yang Jian — Childhood friend, rescuer, and field partner. Gives Zhang Wei supernatural tools and vows to bring him back even at an enormous cost. Zhang Wei reciprocates by protecting him from the Asura God 9 109 193 210 215.
  • Ye Zhen — Sworn “Big Brother,” protector, and the person who makes him a Ghost Handler. Their friendship centers on mutual praise and theatrical bravado 15 61 120.
  • Lin Cheng — Paranormal Forum leader. Recognizes Zhang Wei’s emotional importance to Yang Jian and warns that his ghosts’ influence can make apparent good fortune dangerous 187 224 225.
  • Hu Liena, Yu Tianheng, and Yan — Mission companions during the Cockroach Club operation. Initially doubt him, then reassess him after witnessing his firearms kill a Ghost Handler 45 46 53.
  • Yan Li — Ally during the club infiltration and later deployments; contains Wang Yue’s Ghost Rope after Zhang Wei kills its handler 49 53 113.
  • Feng Quan — Fellow Forum operative. Zhang Wei’s spontaneous use of his name helps interrupt the identity loss caused by Feng Quan’s ghost 113.
  • Huang Ziya — Believes his boast that he can protect her, although he has no active Ghost Card at the time 137.
  • Renxin — Enemy whose Ghost Glove nearly enslaves him. Zhang Wei reverses the curse and confronts him directly 236 237 239.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Cockroach Club Operation

As the Forum’s backup for Hu Liena, Yu Tianheng, and Yan, Zhang Wei leads them into the Cockroach Club. An unexplained object gets them past the entrance guards. Inside, his provocations disrupt the infiltration, while suspicious accidents injure Ye Jun and collapse the members’ sofa 45 46 49.

When the club exposes the infiltrators, Zhang Wei kills Wang Yue and wounds Zhang Han’s face before exhausting his ammunition. He then rejects Wang Xiaoqiang’s expensive wine in favor of cola and mocks his plan to destroy the Paranormal Forum 53 54.

Dajing City and the Ghost Mirror

Zhang Wei deploys to Dajing City and joins Yang Jian’s confrontation with Headquarters captains. Using a Ghost Card, he repeatedly knocks Li Jun away while taunting him, although neither can finish the other 113 119 123.

The Wish-Granting Ghost later produces indistinguishable Zhang Wei copies, reproducing his memories, personality, and Luck Ghost. Although one duplicate shatters and the remaining figure appears genuine, Yang Jian subsequently concludes that both were copies. The original is found alive after having been imprisoned in the Ghost Mirror throughout the battle 153 154 158 173.

Afterward, Zhang Wei spreads his luck domain over Dajing City to assist Lin Cheng and finds the blood-red love letter that later becomes the source of another crisis 176 225.

Sword Dojo Transformation

Zhang Wei accompanies Yang Jian into the Sword Dojo with his pistols, Ghost Cards, and new Deceiving Ghost necklace. He defeats Zhang Long’s immediate attack through an absurd supernatural role-play, but Chen Xin’s sword energy destroys the necklace and absorbs its power 193 204 208.

A later Ghost Sword strike pierces Zhang Wei’s chest. Yang Jian’s rescue attempts fail, and Zhang Wei appears to die after speaking frankly about their friendship. Yang Jian discovers that the Luck Ghost has instead gambled on a three-way balance: the Ghost Sword, Luck Ghost, and Deceiving Ghost begin transforming Zhang Wei’s body 210 213.

He awakens as a Different Kind and immediately shields Yang Jian from the Asura God. By turning the god’s sword into cotton, he leaves him defenseless for Yang Jian to kill. The pair then leave the ruins 215 216.

Cursed Romance and Old Mansion Battle

After completing an A-Rank mission, Zhang Wei tells Yang Jian that he has a date and insists he will be cautious. He subsequently disappears. Yang Jian and Ye Zhen track his earpiece, while Yang Jian connects the disappearance to the love letter and its concealed supernatural influence 224 225.

Yang Jian finds him mentally compromised and calling a Red-Eyed Woman his new wife. When the name on the Marriage Document changes to Yang Jian, Zhang Wei regains control of his body and uses the Deceiving Ghost to repair the damage 232 233.

During the ensuing Old Mansion confrontation, Zhang Wei reverses Renxin’s enslavement curse, attacks the central figure among three apparent bodies, and uses a Ghost Card to repel another Ghost Glove attack 237 239.
