Soul-Hunting Assessment

Xuan Zi supervises twelve Shrek Inner Court students in the Star Dou Great Forest, with Zhang Lexuan leading the group. He makes the expedition her graduation assessment, promising to observe from the shadows and intervene only if their lives are threatened. Although the agreement between Shrek and the forest prohibits deliberately hunting hundred-thousand-year Soul Beasts, he openly wishes to obtain one for her eighth Soul Ring 22.

He eventually enters the Core Area in secret and captures a hundred-thousand-year Dragon-Horned Crystal Python. The python invokes the treaty and threatens consequences from the Beast God, but Xuan Zi dismisses its warning and knocks it unconscious without using a Soul Skill 33.

Meanwhile, a hundred-thousand-year White Tiger King pursues the students in revenge for their killing its sixty-thousand-year cub. Their signal flares fail to bring Xuan Zi back. After a day of pursuit, the tiger’s sonic attack kills eight students and leaves the three companions protected by Zhang Lexuan unconscious. Huo Yuhao intervenes before the beast can kill the survivors 33 34.

Clash with the Beast Kings

Returning with the python, Xuan Zi senses only four of the students’ twelve auras. Zi Ji and the Scarlet King pursue him over his unauthorized capture; he also worries that being identified will bring repercussions for Shrek Academy 38.

Zhang Lexuan tells him that the White Tiger ate the eight dead students, concealing both Huo Yuhao’s rescue and his seizure of their bodies. Enraged, Xuan Zi holds the forest’s beast kings responsible and attacks them despite their attempts to negotiate 36 39.

The battle lasts three days and nights, leaving all three combatants grievously injured. After the beasts retreat, Xuan Zi carries the survivors and the captive python thousands of miles toward the forest’s Outer Area. He admits that drinking led him to disregard both the treaty and his students’ safety, and resolves to resign after returning to the academy; no completed resignation is shown 40.

He gives the python to Zhang Lexuan, who kills it and absorbs its ring. When the absorption leaves her at rank eighty-two with serious physical damage, he urges immediate treatment by Elder Zhuang. She instead insists on visiting a village alone. Xuan Zi reluctantly agrees, planning to follow after escorting the other students out of the forest 40 46.

Battle at Luoyun Village

Xuan Zi follows Zhang Lexuan to the ruins of Luoyun Village, arriving just after Huo Yuhao confines her in the Bright Half-Plane. Finding vengeful spirits and lingering evil soul power, he suspects Huo Yuhao is an Evil Soul Master and demands Zhang’s whereabouts. Huo Yuhao refuses to explain, and they move their confrontation into the sky 48.

His opening bombardment fails, and Huo Yuhao gains the advantage in close combat. Recognizing the threat of Huo Yuhao’s gold-level second awakening, Xuan Zi draws heavily on his soul core and enlarges his Martial Soul Avatar to four hundred meters 49.

Huo Yuhao counters with nine enormous hurricanes. The first three explode against the avatar, breaking a horn, dissolving its hands, and reducing its size. Xuan Zi isolates the remaining six inside an earth-energy orb and suppresses their rotation with Mend Heaven. The battle remains unresolved at the end of Chapter 50 50.

Huo Yuhao subsequently overwhelms him. Zhang Lexuan watches from the Bright Half-Plane in growing despair as Xuan Zi is beaten without the ability to fight back. By the aftermath, his soul core cannot muster any further soul power and his body is covered in wounds. Nevertheless, he remains defiant and declares that Shrek will endure because Mu En still stands as its protector 51 52.

Huo Yuhao then summons the undead Scarlet King and Zi Ji, with Electrolux shielding their appearance from the outside world. Xuan Zi is horrified to learn that both ferocious beasts have been killed and warns that Di Tian’s retaliation will cause a catastrophic Beast Tide 52.

Huo Yuhao releases Xuan Zi specifically so that Shrek can delay Di Tian while he prepares his own intervention. Because the beasts died in another dimension, their deaths produced no detectable celestial phenomena in the forest. Xuan Zi realizes that his earlier fight makes him the prime suspect and that Shrek will face the Beast Tide regardless of whether it hands over Huo Yuhao. He reluctantly accepts the immediate need to return, recovering some soul power and treating his wounds before leaving 53.

Beast Tide Preparations

After returning to Shrek Academy, Xuan Zi explains the situation to Mu En. The academy begins covertly purchasing offensive Soul Cannons, summoning outstanding alumni, and seeking assistance from other powers while maintaining the appearance of normal operations 67.

At a Sea God Pavilion meeting, Xuan Zi announces that only half a month remains before Di Tian’s ultimatum expires. Di Tian demands an explanation for the disappearance of the Scarlet King and Zi Ji, threatening a Beast Tide if Shrek fails to provide one. The academy considers the possibility that the beasts disappeared into a spatial rift while preparing for the threatened attack 65.

Xuan Zi reacts furiously when Yan Shaozhe reports that Du Busi intends to build the Body Sect’s new base on Shrek’s ruins after the Beast Tide. Mu En’s defensive plan assigns Xuan Zi, Elder Zhuang, and himself to restrain Di Tian while the Allied Army fights the other Soul Beasts. Xuan Zi argues that Huo Yuhao may have preparations capable of changing the war’s course, but Mu En rejects relying on him and expresses hostility over Zhang Lexuan’s presumed death 67 68.

Battle with Di Tian and Recovery

During the Beast Tide, Xuan Zi burns most of his vital blood to awaken his ancestral power and hold Di Tian off. After a prolonged fight, Di Tian defeats him and shatters his Martial Soul. Di Tian acknowledges his courage before moving to kill him, but a golden light rises beneath Xuan Zi and blocks the finishing blow. Yan Shaozhe, Qian Duoduo, and Elder Song attempt to reach him but cannot arrive before the intervention 83.

Xuan Zi survives his near-fatal injuries through the Golden Tree. Zhang Lexuan later defends his sacrifice, insisting that he willingly risked his life for Shrek. Both she and Xuan Zi know Huo Yuhao’s involvement in the Beast Tide despite the public attribution of blame to the Holy Spirit Cult 129.

Before Zhang Lexuan’s return, Xuan Zi has declared her dead to the academy. Her appearance alive with Huo Yuhao at the postwar Sea God Pavilion meeting therefore shocks Shrek’s representatives 126.

Although he returns to active duties, his recovery is incomplete. His aura remains weak at the later tournament-planning meeting, and the lasting damage eventually leaves his level-ninety-eight cultivation unstable and permanently prevents further advancement 154 276.

Death God Bandit Mission

Seeking a decisive tournament victory to demonstrate Shrek’s strength after the Beast Tide, Xuan Zi proposes adding Zhang Toushu and Zhang Toumu to the main team, giving it four Soul Emperor-level students. He had previously barred the brothers from tournament participation because their behavior damaged the academy’s image. He considers promoting Huo Xingling to the first team because of her extraordinary potential and spiritual support abilities, though she is ultimately assigned to the second team 101 154.

Xuan Zi personally leads both teams to the Death God Bandit camp in the Mingdou Mountains to gain combat experience. Confident that the strongest concealed enemy is only a Soul King, he relaxes his vigilance and drinks while the students fight. The Death Messenger triggers chain explosions among the corpses inside the cavern. Huo Xingling’s warning protects much of the second team, but the inner-court students suffer devastating casualties: Yao Haoxuan dies, Chen Zifeng loses a leg, and several others are gravely injured 154.

Xuan Zi drags the apparent mastermind out of the cavern with suction, but the enemy escapes through a trick and abducts Huo Xingling. Huo Yuhao rescues her and appears wearing his mask, rebuking Xuan Zi for allowing his drinking to cause another disaster 154 155.

Rather than responding angrily, Xuan Zi thanks the Star Luo Marshal and accepts responsibility. He ends the mission, directs the remaining contestants to follow Wang Yan to Star Luo City, and prepares to return to Shrek with Chen Zifeng and Gongyang Mo. He tells the students that any loss of Shrek’s tournament glory will be his fault, not theirs, and again resolves to resign. Huo Yuhao warns that the two injured students will not survive the journey and summons Wang Xian’er to keep them alive 155.

Huo Yuhao’s Return to Shrek

While Pavilion Master Zhang Lexuan oversees the tournament in Star Luo City, Xuan Zi is entrusted with Shrek Academy’s affairs. He spends his days drinking and eating meat, ostensibly mourning the students lost on the mission but also venting his resentment toward Huo Yuhao. He worries that the Beast Tide has cost the academy half its strength and that, without Zhang Lexuan’s advancement to Limit Douluo, Shrek might no longer retain its standing 276.

Huo Yuhao arrives with roughly one hundred thousand soldiers and numerous powerful experts. Xuan Zi leads the pavilion elders out to confront them, but trembles upon recognizing Huo Yuhao, whom he had believed dead. He releases his Godly Taotie Bull and challenges Huo Yuhao’s declaration that he has come to kill someone 276.

After Huo Yuhao reveals Dai Yueheng’s corpse and demands Dai Huabin, Xuan Zi weighs the academy’s duty to protect a student against the likelihood of its destruction in battle. He ultimately agrees not to interfere in the personal grievance and pulls Dai Huabin out of the crowd with suction. When Huo Yuhao attempts to kill the student, Mu En’s soul intervenes with Sea God’s Light and rebukes Xuan Zi for yielding to fear 278 279.

Mu En’s condemnation brings Xuan Zi back to his own sense of justice. When Huo Yuhao orders his forces to attack, sparing students and those who surrender, Xuan Zi joins Mu En in a Martial Soul Fusion that forms Taotie. They use Heaven-Swallowing to trap Huo Yuhao, who counters with three specially made throwing knives driven by psychic power 279.

Death and Aftermath

Xuan Zi’s effort to protect Dai Huabin ends with the student turning against him. Confined behind Huo Yuhao’s barrier, Xuan Zi watches Dai Huabin approach with profound regret, recognizing that he has sacrificed himself to rescue someone who is now willing to kill him. Mu En attempts to intervene but cannot break through the barrier 281.

Dai Huabin kills Xuan Zi and cuts off his head. After Huo Yuhao releases the barrier, Mu En and the Shrek elders find his still-warm corpse. Mu En returns the head to the body and closes Xuan Zi’s eyes before turning his fury on Dai Huabin. The elders share his grief and hostility toward the student who killed their deputy Pavilion Master 282.

Mu En rejects Dai Huabin’s claim that Huo Yuhao forced him to commit the killing and begins punishing him. Later, after the larger confrontation ends, Mu En acknowledges that although Huo Yuhao brought about the crisis, Dai Huabin’s greed bears greater responsibility for Xuan Zi’s death 282 287.

Appearance

Xuan Zi is described as disheveled, and Zhang Lexuan’s expedition first shows him drinking wine with half-closed eyes 22 33.

Personality

Xuan Zi is affectionate toward Zhang Lexuan and eager to secure an exceptional Soul Ring for her. That concern coexists with recklessness: he secretly violates the forest treaty while supposedly safeguarding the students. After the disaster, he acknowledges his failure and blames his drinking and poor judgment rather than denying responsibility 22 33 40.

As deputy commander of the Shrek Inspection Corps, he fiercely opposes Evil Soul Masters. His suspicions at Luoyun Village quickly become accusations, but he does not underestimate Huo Yuhao merely because of his age. In combat, he favors immediate, overwhelming force over restraint or fairness, while adapting when his initial attacks fail 48 49 50.

His devotion to Shrek can inspire considerable courage. Even after Huo Yuhao defeats him, he professes faith in Mu En and the academy’s survival rather than begging for his life. During the Beast Tide, he burns most of his vital blood to delay Di Tian, earning acknowledgment from the Beast God himself 52 83.

His remorse does not consistently prevent repeated negligence. After surviving the Beast Tide, he again drinks while supervising a dangerous student mission, contributing to another disaster. He nevertheless accepts Huo Yuhao’s criticism without resentment, thanks him for saving Huo Xingling, and takes responsibility for the consequences to the tournament team 154 155.

By Huo Yuhao’s later return to Shrek, resentment and fear have displaced much of his earlier defiance. He initially prioritizes the academy’s survival over Dai Huabin’s protection. Mu En’s rebuke restores his resolve, and he joins the fight despite the overwhelming threat. His final regret centers on having risked himself to save the student who turns against him 276 278 279 281.
