Background / History

Zhang Lexuan’s entire family was massacred when she was a child. Mu En rescued her and required her to swear that she would protect Shrek Academy forever and marry his great-grandson, Bei Bei. She accepted both obligations out of gratitude 35.

Bei Bei was more than ten years younger than her. As she watched him grow, Lexuan gradually came to regard herself as his future wife. Mu En later released her from the marriage agreement, admitting it had been a lapse in judgment. She then learned that Bei Bei had never known about it, saw her only as an older sister, and already had a girlfriend 35.

Despite the agreement’s withdrawal, Lexuan remained determined to protect both Shrek Academy and Bei Bei, even if that meant growing old alone 35.

Mu En later identifies her as originally coming from the Sun Moon Empire, although she grew up in the Heaven Dou Empire. He regards her attachment to Shrek as more important than her origins and considers her one of his beloved children 89.

Her responsibilities eventually expand from leading Inner Court students to succeeding Mu En as Sea God Pavilion Master. She initially feels unworthy of the position, grieving his death and struggling with the fact that she cannot bring herself to pursue revenge against Huo Yuhao 126 129.

By the time she presides over the empires’ negotiations, her former romantic feelings for Bei Bei have settled into familial affection. She accepts that he loves someone else and becomes increasingly concerned with Huo Yuhao and the legacy he has left behind 219.

After Shrek Academy’s destruction, Lexuan undertakes its reconstruction. She later explains that the old Shrek Academy no longer exists and that she has named its replacement Sea God Academy, after the Sea God Pavilion 314 329.

Her later life includes a mutual relationship with Huo Yuhao and their daughter, Huo Yutong. After three years apart, they reunite during the siege of Shrek City. She subsequently accepts the Moon God’s mantle so that she can remain strong enough to stand beside him as he advances into the Divine Realm’s highest ranks 328 331.

Appearance

  • Face: Gentle, beautiful features with willow-leaf eyebrows 30.
  • Hair: Raven-black hair reaching her waist 30.
  • Clothing: A long red dress during her first confrontation with Huo Yuhao 30.
  • After her breakthrough: Remains visibly pale from the physical damage caused by absorbing her eighth ring 46.
  • During Nine-Color’s possession: Wears a black-and-gold gown. When her martial soul activates, her dress turns gold, a golden full-moon mark appears between her brows, and seven-colored light shines in her eyes 174.
  • After reaching Limit Douluo: Her appearance is described as substantially more beautiful following Nine-Color’s possession and her subsequent advancement 218.
  • Later clothing: Frequently appears in a long silver or silver-white dress, including at the empires’ meeting, the tournament finals, and her confrontation with Huo Yuhao after Shrek’s destruction 218 254 294.
  • During the siege of Shrek City: Appears haggard after a month without adequate sleep or rest, holding her approximately two-year-old daughter on the city’s gate tower 328.

Personality

Lexuan is ordinarily gentle, considerate, and composed. She downplays the strength of the ring she can absorb to spare Xuan Zi worry, and her calm judgment makes her an effective leader under pressure 22 33.

Her loyalty to Shrek is deeply personal: the academy is her home and faith. She can tolerate criticism directed at herself, but attacks on Shrek’s legitimacy provoke intense anger. As an Inspection Corps member, she initially treats necromantic methods and an evil aura as sufficient grounds for arrest, reasoning that someone experimenting on Soul Beast remains may eventually harm people 30.

Her certainty is not absolute. Huo Yuhao’s arguments about oppression make her question Shrek’s responsibility for the rise of Evil Soul Masters. Believing he may have been forced onto his path, she decides to protect him after taking him to the academy’s elders 31.

Compassion and stubborn duty also leave her vulnerable to coercion. She ultimately agrees to Huo Yuhao’s sexual demand when convinced that refusing will cost innocent villagers their lives. Later, she risks her life for injured teammates and delays urgently needed treatment to investigate Luoyun Village 32 34 46.

She repeatedly sets aside her pride to protect people she regards as family. While confined in the Bright Half-Plane, she kneels before Seven-Color and promises to serve her in exchange for saving Xuan Zi. During the beast tide, she spends her soul power and life force sustaining Moon’s Eye to shield events from the Divine Realm, accepting the danger for Shrek’s sake 51 118.

Her distrust of Huo Yuhao does not prevent her from scrutinizing his ideals. Given the opportunity to leave, she instead remains to see whether he can create his promised “Ideal World.” His later policies offering free awakenings, education, and cultivation subsidies challenge her belief that he acts only for profit 68 130.

As Pavilion Master, she combines courtesy with decisive authority. She provides a neutral venue for imperial negotiations but immediately punishes improper behavior and warns the delegates against causing trouble. Her concern for Tang Ya likewise includes respect for the younger woman’s agency: although Lexuan believes she could avenge Tang Ya herself, she waits for Tang Ya to decide what she wants 218 219.

Her eventual love for Huo Yuhao is confident rather than dependent on an idealized image of him. During the Asking Love Valley trial, she is willing to die for him but accepts that he would not make the same promise, saying that knowing he loves her is enough. She later accepts divine inheritance not because she particularly values status, but because she wants to remain capable of standing beside him 314 331.

Motherhood creates another limit to her habitual self-sacrifice. When Xu Tianran threatens Shrek City, she considers sacrificing herself to stop him but cannot bear to abandon Huo Yutong 328.

Abilities & Skills

Silver Moon Martial Soul

Her martial soul manifests as a silver moon and possesses a natural ability to suppress souls 30 40.

  • Moonlight enhancement: Nighttime moonlight strengthens her abilities. Even after exhausting her soul power, she draws on it to move and defend her companions 22 34.
  • Soul suppression: Helps her resist the Dragon-Horned Crystal Python’s remnant-soul assault during ring absorption 40.
  • Moon Blade: Transforms the Silver Moon into a spinning blade capable of piercing the unconscious python’s skull 40.
  • Protection: Shields three nearby teammates from the White Tiger King’s sonic attack, although they still suffer serious injuries 33.
  • Physical limit: Her martial soul can withstand the soul assault of a hundred-thousand-year ring better than her body can withstand its energy 40.
  • Moonlight replenishment: Her transformed silver eighth ring absorbs moonlight and channels it into her body during recovery 120.
  • Divine compatibility: Her moon martial soul qualifies her to inherit Yue Shen’s divine position, provided the successor is also female 331 332.

First Soul Skill: Crescent Blades

Her first yellow ring releases several silver crescent blades from the moon behind her 30.

  • Uses the blades to threaten and attempt to capture Huo Yuhao.
  • Stops them an inch from his eyes during their argument 30.

Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Skill

Her newly acquired eighth-ring skill turns the silver moon into a blood moon and fires a destructive beam of bloody light. Its name is not given 48.

  • Uses it against Huo Yuhao at Luoyun Village while still gravely injured.
  • The attack fails when he catches and crushes the beam with one hand 48.

Third Soul Skill: Silver Moon Protection

Her third-ring ability is Silver Moon Protection. When Nine-Color strengthens the ring to the million-year level, it gains two additional defensive abilities, Divine Moon Protection and Divine Light Shield 176.

  • Nine-Color activates the golden Divine Moon Protection and Divine Light Shield together while controlling Lexuan’s body, covering her against Huo Yuhao’s attacks 176.
  • These enhanced abilities are demonstrated during possession; their later independent use by Lexuan is not documented in the supplied appearances 176 178.

Moon’s Eye

Moon’s Eye is a forbidden, divine-skill-level illusion technique that Lexuan performs at Huo Yuhao’s request during the beast tide. Although presented to her as hiding Douluo Star from the Divine Realm’s perception, its actual covered area is the Star Dou Great Forest 118.

  • Purpose: Prevents a watching deity in the Divine Realm from observing and potentially interfering with events in the forest 118.
  • Cost: Sustaining the technique nearly exhausts her soul power and life force. She emerges above the forest and begins falling when it ends 118.
  • Backlash: Leaves Moon Demon Markings on her body and damage to her physical vitality and spiritual sea 120.
  • Treatment: Huo Yuhao’s separate Eye of the Moon removes the markings. A drop of Gold of Life then restores her vitality and spiritual sea, allowing her to recover further through moonlight absorption 120.

Nine-Color-Enhanced Combat State

Nine-Color’s possession greatly alters the appearance and strength of Lexuan’s martial soul. This state is controlled by Nine-Color rather than being a straightforward demonstration of Lexuan’s own will or normal combat abilities 174 176.

  • Manifests a blood-gold crescent moon and nine golden soul rings 174.
  • Condenses two radiant Moon Blades, one gold and one silver 174.
  • Releases a broad barrage of Moonlight Radiance, which Huo Yuhao withstands with his Invincible Protective Barrier 176.
  • Uses enhanced defensive skills supplied by the upgraded third ring 176.
  • Nine-Color’s attempted soul-core detonation nearly destroys Lexuan’s body before Huo Yuhao reverses time and space at the critical moment 178.

Limit Douluo Strength

As a Limit Douluo, Lexuan becomes a principal source of deterrence for Shrek Academy and Shrek City 218 276.

  • Effortlessly hurls Dou Ling commander Xu Shu into a wall without visibly using soul power, injuring him and establishing order at the imperial meeting 218 219.
  • Travels from Star Luo City to Shrek City in a day while using her soul power at full output 287.
  • Holds out during a month-long siege of Shrek City, although the prolonged defense ultimately exhausts her 328.
  • Kong Deming’s Class 9.5 soul tool allows him to fight her without falling behind, demonstrating that advanced soul tools can challenge her despite her cultivation 328.

Moon God Inheritance

Huo Yuhao obtains the divine position of Yue Shen, the First-Level Moon God, for Lexuan. Its requirements specify a female successor with a moon martial soul, making her the uniquely suitable candidate identified on the Douluo Continent 331.

  • The Moon God’s Nine Trials recognize her existing cultivation achievements as already completed, from rank ten through Limit Douluo 332.
  • The rewards bring her Moon God affinity to 100%, initiating divine inheritance 332.
  • The God of Destruction confirms her suitability based on her moon martial soul, Limit Douluo cultivation, exceptional aptitude, and pure heart 332.
  • The Goddess of Life assures her that she can cultivate undisturbed in the Divine Realm. Lexuan begins absorbing moon divine power and preparing to condense a divine soul and divine position 332.

Leadership and Combat Judgment

Her command ability and combat strength exceed those of ordinary Soul Masters at her rank 33.

  • Bears roughly half of the White Tiger King’s attacks while coordinating the expedition’s resistance.
  • Helps the group endure a day of pursuit before its defenses collapse 33.
  • Evacuates the three unconscious survivors and eight bodies once Huo Yuhao intervenes 34.
  • Presides over Sea God Pavilion meetings and helps organize Shrek’s tournament roster after the beast tide 154.
  • Recruits Mu Chenxi to strengthen Shrek’s tournament team in response to politically motivated rule changes 222.
  • Encourages the finalists by affirming that the academy is proud of them regardless of the result 254.
  • Rebuilds the destroyed academy as Sea God Academy and continues defending Shrek City 329.

Relationships

  • Mu En — Childhood rescuer who imposed her vows to Shrek and Bei Bei, then later withdrew the marriage requirement 35. He is also her mentor and predecessor as Pavilion Master. His apparent death causes her profound grief; Huo Yuhao later reveals that he preserved Mu En’s shattered soul in the Golden Tree so Lexuan could see him once more. She arrives as Mu En’s golden-dragon silhouette fades, too late to prevent Shrek’s destruction 89 124 129 287.
  • Bei Bei — The subject of her former marriage agreement and one-sided love. He knows nothing of the agreement and regards her as an older sister 35. Her feelings eventually settle into familial affection, and she accepts his love for someone else 219.
  • Xuan Zi / Elder Xuan — Teacher and family-like elder. His absence during the expedition leaves her team unprotected; afterward, he supplies her eighth-ring beast and urges her to seek treatment 22 33 40 46. She pleads with Seven-Color to save his life during his fight with Huo Yuhao. His later death becomes a major reason for her anger toward Huo Yuhao; she accuses Huo of having threatened Dai Huabin into killing him 51 294 295.
  • Huo Yuhao — Initially her adversary, coercer, and rescuer. She briefly conceals his involvement from Xuan Zi, but his theft of her teammates’ bodies fuels her determination to confront him. Their Luoyun Village encounter ends with her imprisonment 32 34 36 39 40 48. Their relationship continues through coercion, ideological conflict, rescue, and growing attachment, eventually becoming a mutual romance. She names him as her lover in the Asking Love Valley, publicly calls him her husband, and has their daughter, Huo Yutong. He later secures the Moon God’s divine position for her 68 118 120 294 295 314 328 331.
  • Huo Yutong — Her daughter with Huo Yuhao. Lexuan raises her during his three-year absence and holds her during the final crisis of Shrek City’s siege. Yutong’s presence prevents Lexuan from easily accepting a suicidal sacrifice; Huo Yuhao meets the child for the first time when he returns 328.
  • Seven-Color — Her companion in the Bright Half-Plane. Lexuan agrees to stay with her and provide care in exchange for intervention on Xuan Zi’s behalf. Their relationship becomes gentle and affectionate, with Lexuan tending to her during recovery. Seven-Color later transports Lexuan to confront Huo Yuhao after Shrek’s destruction 51 53 59 294.
  • Nine-Color — Plane will who possesses and transforms her body. Nine-Color uses her enhanced martial soul against Huo Yuhao and threatens to perish together with her. Huo Yuhao removes Nine-Color and prevents the attempted detonation from killing Lexuan 174 176 177 178.
  • Shrek expedition teammates — Students under her leadership. She risks herself to protect them and blames herself for the deaths of eight members 33 34 36.
  • Yan Shaozhe — Regards Lexuan as a daughter. He grieves when told she has died and is overjoyed at her return, although her distressed appearance beside Huo Yuhao concerns him 126.
  • Mu Chenxi — A close, sister-like companion who greets her with an embrace. Lexuan recruits her for Shrek’s tournament team and teases her about her expectations for a future husband. Chenxi’s dragon, Little Gold, is fond of Lexuan because she fed him when he was young 222.
  • Tang Ya — Lexuan is concerned about her discouragement and unsuccessful efforts to obtain help from the Clear Sky Sect. She believes she could avenge Tang Ya’s enemies but waits for Tang Ya to choose her own course 219.
  • Xu Tianran — Initially an imperial delegate whose interest she does not reciprocate. He later besieges Shrek City and demands that she become his empress. She rejects him by identifying Huo Yuhao as her husband and their child’s father 218 219 328.
  • Dai Yueheng — Has long admired her from afar. Seeing her in Huo Yuhao’s arms provokes jealousy, but his feelings are not presented as reciprocated 125.
  • Xu Jiujiu — Views Lexuan as a romantic rival because of their respective attachments to Huo Yuhao. Her reaction to Lexuan’s appearance at the finals includes jealousy and surprise at her rapid advancement 254.
  • Huo Yun’er — Huo Yuhao’s mother, whom Lexuan meets following the family’s reunion 331.
  • Goddess of Life and God of Destruction — Divine Realm authorities who recognize and support her suitability for the Moon God’s position. The Goddess of Life welcomes her and ensures that her cultivation will not be disturbed 332.
