Background / History

Zhao Wuji serves as the examiner for Shrek Academy’s fourth entrance trial. When five applicants bypass the earlier tests because their soul power exceeds level 25, he replaces the usual assessment with a challenge to endure his attacks for one stick of incense. He is especially pleased to discover that Zhang Tianyu is a Soul Elder, calling the new intake a group of “little monsters.” 18

During the trial, Zhao Wuji faces Zhang Tianyu’s Huangquan martial soul, its soul-affecting black fire, flying-sword attacks, and coordinated assaults from the applicants. He ultimately stops the fight rather than escalate it with his full strength, acknowledges that he could lose or be injured if he continues to hold back, and admits the group to Shrek Academy. 19

He later accompanies the Shrek students into the Star Dou Great Forest. Zhao Wuji subdues a Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent for Oscar, confronts Chao Tianxiang during the dispute over the serpent, and orders the students to retreat when the Titan Giant Ape appears. He personally attacks the beast to buy them time and entrusts Zhang Tianyu with covering the group’s escape. 44 45

As Shrek’s vice dean, Zhao Wuji assists Flender in monitoring Yu Xiaogang and responds to several increasingly bizarre incidents involving Yu Xiaogang and Tang San. He is protective of Shrek’s students under real danger. Against the Titan Giant Ape, he immediately places himself between the creature and the students, orders them to escape, and accepts that he may not be able to hold out for long. 45
