Background / History
Transmigration and employment
Ye Wuyou arrives in the cultivation world with memories of his previous life and the original body’s background. His initial enthusiasm gives way to concern over poor cultivation progress, limited money, and the need for dependable employment. Using his late father Ye Changsheng’s connections and a bribe, he obtains a first-floor jailer’s position in Skywave City’s Heavenly Prison 1 4 5.
The job pays three taels of silver a month, provides meals, and normally follows a two-days-on, two-days-off schedule. He volunteers for overtime to finance body tempering. Access to the Great River Qi-Driving Art leads to his first major advantage when the voice in his head transforms it into the Formless Heart Sutra 1 2.
Heavenly Prison disaster
A prison riot and collapse leave Ye Wuyou trapped among dead colleagues on the eighth level. Lu Caiwei initially threatens him because she previously examined his body and found him dead. He conceals both his transmigration and the Sutra, inventing a single-use inherited secret art to explain his survival 3 4 5.
Lu Caiwei protects him from controlled corpses, but the prison’s soul erosion overwhelms her. Ye bargains with her master, Xia Anmeng, accepting temporary possession only after securing cultivation manuals and an oath against permanent body seizure. He subsequently saves Caiwei by transferring part of his own soul into her 6 7 10.
When the blue, many-armed anomaly nearly kills him, Ye takes sixty percent of Xia Anmeng’s soul power and enters No-Self. He defeats and devours the anomaly, subdues the Legless Man, and receives the Mute Woman’s voluntary submission. His newfound arrogance leads him to insult Lu Qingshan, who strikes him down and removes him and Caiwei from the prison 14 15 29.
Recovery and first mission
Ye wakes at Zhao Changhe’s home after a week unconscious. Disturbed by his altered behavior during No-Self, he nevertheless chooses to continue using the Sutra. Caiwei leaves cultivation manuals, medicinal herbs, and a letter thanking him and promising protection from her furious master 16 17.
Zhao supervises his recovery and training, helping him complete body tempering and reach Hidden Origin. After learning Zhao’s martial techniques, Ye returns to prison as a Grade D guard. He selects a mission against an injured Third-Tier Qingqiu Demon Fox because its reward includes jade soul flowers capable of nourishing damaged souls 19 20 21.
He joins Lin Qingqing, Xu Fang, and Bai Changzai in Grade C, Squad Five. During the pursuit, he consumes Murong Huan’s Fourth Realm remnant soul inside an illusion realm. He later kills the fugitive fox and a Third Realm brocade-robed attacker, demonstrating how lethal Ghost can be despite his First Realm cultivation 22 28 31.
Cloudmist Village
The Thousand Illusions Purple-Gold Bell’s chime precedes Ye’s entrapment in Cloudmist Village’s distorted reality. While his companions accept false village identities, he behaves erratically, interprets events as a game of Werewolf, and repeatedly encounters a Man in Brocade who returns after being killed 31 33 35 36 37.
An attempted rescue of Bai Lu accidentally binds her as his spirit beast. After an unseen force drags Ye into the village well, he revives and regains his memories, concluding that Bai Lu spent one of her fox-tail lives to save him. He then investigates the bell’s memory erasure and the ruined village hidden beneath its peaceful appearance 37 39 40.
Ye cooperates with the Man in Brocade to enter the well’s hidden space and confront the eyeball behind the disturbance. He uses Bloodburn to pursue the corpse carrying it and eventually swallows the eyeball. Escaping costs him his right eye; the Man in Brocade cannot cross the boundary separating the living from the dead and leaves him an address before finally fading 41 42 43 46.
Uncanny corruption
After the survivors recover their memories, Ye keeps Bai Lu’s identity secret and tells her she is free to live independently, although their pact remains. Returning to Skywave City, he discovers that his restored Crimson Right Eye can cast illusions and uses it to conceal his altered left arm 47 49.
Lu Qingshan identifies the transformation as a consequence of overusing the remnant. As the ghostly blue corruption spreads, Lu proposes learning a Twelve Divine Path Art: its cost could be borne by the Uncanny, weakening it enough to establish a balance. Ye has not yet learned the art when Lu asks whether he can accept another version of himself existing in the world 49 50.
Appearance
Ye Wuyou wears a black jailer’s uniform; his later distinguishing features result from Uncanny use rather than any established natural appearance 2 14 49.
- Right eye: Lost during the well incident, later restored as the Crimson Right Eye. He keeps it bandaged to avoid questions about its recovery 46 49.
- Left arm and hand: Develop ghostly blue changes that spread upward. He conceals them with an illusion, but Lu Qingshan sees through the disguise 49 50.
Personality
Ye Wuyou is practical, self-deprecating, and socially adaptable. He values regular pay and survival over the prestige of cultivation or prison service. Experience from his previous workplace helps him navigate colleagues, bribery, and uncomfortable conversations without openly expressing his irritation 1 2 5.
He guards his secrets and bargains firmly when others need his help. Although grateful to Lu Caiwei, he refuses to treat that gratitude as a debt to Xia Anmeng. His caution also appears in mission selection: he rejects lucrative assignments against fugitives plainly beyond his strength 4 7 21.
His concern for others coexists with increasingly predatory behavior. He risks his soul to save Caiwei and declines to exploit Bai Lu’s contract, but consumes Murong Huan, contemplates killing wounded teammates, and expresses an intention to devour Xia Anmeng later 10 28 29 47.
No-Self and the narrator complicate his sense of agency. Under their influence, he can become arrogant, emotionally detached, or dangerously ambitious. He notices these changes, questions whether he remains himself, and repeatedly rejects the narrator’s reckless instructions—though he is not always able to resist them 16 19 22 29 41.
Abilities & Skills
Formless Heart Sutra
His central cultivation method, created when the narrator transforms the Great River Qi-Driving Art 2.
- Automatic cultivation: Circulates qi without constant deliberate practice and develops Vital Breath during body tempering 2 19.
- Technique replication: Guides Vital Breath through the correct meridians, allowing him to reproduce Lu Caiwei’s sword technique and Zhao Changhe’s martial skills after observation 8 9 20.
- Method transformation: Improves the Soul-Splitting Method into a usable Soul-Controlling Scripture and absorbs another cultivation manual to extend its own cultivation ceiling 10 16 41.
- Current ceiling: Supports cultivation through the Third Realm; Ye senses that further stages cannot unlock until he reaches that realm 16.
- No-Self: Grants extraordinary insight into falsehoods and supernatural phenomena, but is associated with arrogance, emotional detachment, and uncertainty over his identity 14 16 29.
Ghost and Ghost Hands
The blue, many-armed Uncanny he devours becomes a presence he can control as though it were part of his body 18 19 29.
- Manifestation: Produces spectral hands from different parts of his body 18.
- Concealment: The hands are nearly invisible; even Xia Anmeng’s experienced remnant soul cannot sense them during his later confrontation with his teammates 18 29.
- Strength: In his initial test, one hand easily lifts a hundred-kilogram weight. Increasing their number eventually reduces each hand’s strength 18.
- Soul corrosion: Consumes Murong Huan’s Fourth Realm remnant soul, leaving Ghost slightly more substantial 28 29.
- Utility: Restrains an unruly horse, helps break an Uncanny barrier, and catches Ye after a fall 23 42.
- Combat limits: Most effective at close range against opponents unable to detect it. Distance and protective Vital Breath make attacks less reliable 31.
- Counters and cost: The well’s unseen force erodes a Ghost Hand; repeated use of the remnant causes progressive bodily corruption 39 49 50.
Soul-Controlling Scripture — Life-and-Death Brand
An improved form of Xia Anmeng’s Soul-Splitting Method, made accessible through the narrator’s intervention 10 41.
- Soul transfer: Sends part of Ye’s soul into Lu Caiwei, stabilizing her after her own soul has nearly eroded away 10.
- Dependence: At the time of her rescue, withdrawing that portion would leave Caiwei little more than a living corpse 10.
- Corruption resistance: A small soul-wisp placed on the Man in Brocade is intended to delay Uncanny interference and give Ye time to react 41.
- Control limit: The shallowly attached wisp does not allow Ye to control the Man in Brocade 41.
- Risk: The underlying technique belongs to the middle three realms. Performing it below that level risks destroying the user’s soul and leaves Ye severely exhausted 10.
Sword Rises with Wind and Thunder
A sword technique copied from Lu Caiwei through the Formless Heart Sutra 6 8.
- Cuts the white, jelly-like anomaly down to a small fragment and strikes the unseen boundary of the prison’s spatial loop 8 9.
- Remains usable after his borrowed cultivation disappears, though its power is much weaker 17.
- Zhao warns that using it before adequate body tempering can strain his energy channels; Ye suspects the Sutra makes it safer, but still receives a warning not to overuse it 17.
Zhao Changhe’s Martial Techniques and Bloodburn
Ye reproduces Zhao’s fist techniques with extraordinary accuracy and deliberately inserts mistakes to conceal the depth of his understanding 20.
- Layered force: Understands a punch that stacks Vital Breath to produce the power of ten ordinary punches 20.
- Bloodburn: Stores Vital Breath in the body and temporarily boosts strength and blood energy 20 43.
- Duration: His combat activation provides roughly three minutes of enhanced power during the pursuit beneath the village well 43.
Supernatural Perception and Resistance
Ye can perceive beings and hidden realities that other cultivators cannot directly see 4 8 40.
- Sees imprisoned anomalies and the white, jelly-like entity emerging from controlled corpses 3 4 6.
- Remains unaffected by the eighth level’s emotional and mental erosion before reaching the First Realm 6 7.
- Perceives the village’s scorched ruins and the Man in Brocade’s decaying body beneath their apparent forms 40.
- Senses the Uncanny aura while searching the well’s hidden space 42.
- Not absolute immunity: He still becomes confused and erratic during the village incident, and his Ghost power cannot initially protect him from the well 33 39 40.
Beast-Taming Art and Bound Spirit Pact
Ye acquires the Beast Taming Sect’s inherited art and imitates a spell remembered from Tu Su, accidentally binding Bai Lu 33 37.
- The pact prevents Bai Lu from harming or disobeying him 39.
- Her one tail for one life ability can substitute one of her lives for his death; Ye attributes his revival from the well to this mechanism 39 40.
- He can hear some of her thoughts through the control-based art 47.
- He later promises not to demand service from her and permits her to live independently; no dissolution of the pact is shown 47.
Crimson Right Eye
His restored right eye gains illusion-casting power after he swallows the uncanny eyeball 46 49.
Intrusive Narrator
A persistent voice frames Ye’s circumstances as the adventures of an overwhelmingly powerful protagonist. Its useful interventions coexist with crude suggestions and dangerous exaggerations 1 2 19 22.
- Supplies the transformations behind the Formless Heart Sutra and Soul-Controlling Scripture 2 41.
- Identifies hidden details such as the captive bear demon and the remnant soul in Caiwei’s ring 2 5.
- Encourages reckless breakthroughs, predation, and violence; Ye usually calls this “barking” and rejects it 19 22 41.
- Its assurances of invincibility are unreliable. Ye explicitly recognizes that trusting everything it says would have killed him repeatedly 41.
