Background / History
Lin Qingqing belongs to Squad Five of the Heavenly Prison. The squad was demoted from Grade B to Grade C after a Black Bear Fiend disguised itself as a badly injured, lower-tier demon and caused deaths and serious injuries. Although the squad was reportedly not at fault, its damaged reputation made recruiting another member difficult 22.
When Ye Wuyou arrived to join their demon fox capture mission, Lin introduced herself and took responsibility for the team’s rules. She required him to follow her orders, allowed him to leave over disagreements, and established that additional spoils would belong to whoever obtained them. His easy acceptance surprised her 22.
Appearance
Lin is described as a capable-looking woman with a slender figure 29 33.
- Clothing: A fitted black outfit at her introduction 22.
- Bearing: Uses confident posture and a friendly smile when recruiting Ye Wuyou; openly takes pride in her figure 22.
Personality
Lin is assertive, sharp-tongued, and quick to retaliate against insults. Her familiar arguments with Xu Fang include mocking his “Furious Vajra” reputation, criticizing his lack of tact, and fiercely defending Formation Arts when he belittles her specialty 22 23.
Her teasing manner coexists with practical caution. She recognizes the unusual location of a demon beast attack, questions the unexplained rescue signals, and takes steps to communicate with their apparent source rather than simply following them without investigation 24 26.
Lin also takes responsibility for her teammates. Despite initially doubting Ye Wuyou’s usefulness as a First Realm recruit, she insists on searching for him after an earthquake separates the group. After the mission, she feels guilty about his lost eye and considers sharing the reward with him 22 32 48.
Abilities & Skills
Formation Arts
Lin identifies herself as a Second Realm Formation Master and regards her discipline as one requiring talent 22 23.
- Specialization: Provides the formation-focused role alongside Xu Fang’s body cultivation and Bai Changzai’s Talisman Arts 23.
- Stated limitations: Xu Fang claims she cannot establish advanced formations and dismisses her low-level formations as barely useful; this is his criticism, not an independently demonstrated assessment 23.
- Illusion assessment: Initially rejects Ye Wuyou’s suspicion that their surroundings are illusory because both the environment and their presence feel real to her. She nevertheless remains trapped in the Illusion Realm 27 28.
Mission Leadership
Lin directs the capture team’s travel, investigations, and response to emergencies 22 25 26.
- Procures horses and consults a map during the journey to the Cloudmist Mountains 23.
- Uses a Heavenly Prison bell to locate the demon fox and display its recorded history 23 25.
- Lights beacon signals to acknowledge an apparent distress call and help other guards locate the team 26.
- Insists that the group search for a missing teammate despite exhaustion and the possibility of mission failure 32.
Practical Skills
- Horsemanship: Says she is a skilled rider and offers to share her horse with the inexperienced Ye Wuyou 23.
- First aid: Bandages the wounded Xu Fang in Cloudmist Village 37.
Equipment / Items
- Heavenly Prison tracking bell — Contains a retained trace of the demon fox’s aura, allowing the team to locate it. It can also display information about the fugitive 23 25.
- Ye Wuyou later retrieves the bell from Lin to use as a temporary vessel for the uncanny eyeball behind the village’s illusion. The Man in Brocade successfully seals the eyeball inside, but warns that the vessel cannot contain it for long 41 44.
- Map — Used to plan the route and locate a village where the team can rest 23.
- Beacon signals — Used during the attempted rescue on Cloudmist Mountain 26.
- Four horses — Procured for the mission and lost during its events 23 48.
Relationships
- Ye Wuyou — Junior colleague and mission teammate. Lin initially worries that his low cultivation will burden the group, but later notices his altered behavior, insists on finding him after their separation, and expresses remorse over his injury. Back in Skywave City, she accepts his mission token and stops Xu Fang from prying into his private business 22 29 32 48 49.
- Xu Fang — Longstanding squadmate with whom she frequently trades insults. Their quarrels concern his reputation, her formation skills, and mission decisions; she also tends his wounds 22 23 32 37.
- Bai Changzai — Quiet squadmate specializing in Talisman Arts. Lin introduces his abilities to Ye Wuyou and describes him as unlikely to stand on the front line 23.
- Bai Lu — While affected by the village’s illusion, Lin comforts her after Ye Wuyou’s harassment and supports her during her distressed reaction to becoming a bound spirit beast. Lin mistakes that distress for confusion or madness 33 38.
