Background / History
Konoha Defection and Earlier Ambitions
Orochimaru was Hiruzen Sarutobi’s student and one of the Konoha Sannin before becoming a wanted missing-nin. Hiruzen later admits that their teacher–student bond prevented him from stopping Orochimaru’s escape. Orochimaru subsequently maintained hideouts across the Shinobi World 48 49 89.
After losing to Itachi, Orochimaru coveted the Sharingan and selected Sasuke as a prospective target. He also arranged the Konoha Crush Plan with Rasa, intending to invade during the Chunin Exams and personally kill Hiruzen 49 61 72.
Encounter with Cangyue
Orochimaru meets Cangyue after a giant snake attacks the flying swordsman and is cut apart. Cangyue immediately impales him with the Thunder Sword, but Orochimaru reappears unharmed through his substitution technique. Rather than retaliate, he remains fascinated by the swords’ speed and independent protection of their master 48.
At a nearby hideout, Orochimaru probes Cangyue’s rapid growth and requests a biological sample. Repeated sword thrusts establish that Cangyue will not tolerate such probing. The meeting nevertheless produces an exchange: Orochimaru receives Blue Eternal Dream and gives up the Kusanagi Sword. Cangyue also warns him to abandon his designs on Sasuke 49.
Orochimaru then agrees to test Cangyue’s dream manipulation. Its potential as a repeatable experimental environment outweighs his suspicion, though Cangyue openly admits that he does not know how accurately the dreams reproduce reality 50.
The Interstellar Dream
Orochimaru awakens six hours later because he has died within the dream. During approximately 3,700 subjective years, he achieved immortality, unified the shinobi villages into a federation, developed spacefaring technology, and expanded across the stars 52.
The federation fought the Ōtsutsuki and found their homeworld, but Shibai Ōtsutsuki destroyed it despite its overwhelming fleets. Dream experiments also suggested that even Hashirama, Naruto, and Boruto could not endure more than ten Chakra Fruits. Orochimaru suspects that Cangyue, whom he identifies as an outsider to the Shinobi World, might exceed that limit 52.
The experience redirects Orochimaru’s ambitions toward building a new world and eventually reaching space. Cangyue cautions that dream-derived discoveries may not translate directly into reality 52.
Scientific Partnership
Orochimaru applies his accumulated knowledge to living clones, mass-produced ocular powers, and advanced laboratory technology. He invites Cangyue to inspect these breakthroughs and offers extensive eye implants as a demonstration of his usefulness 67 68.
When Cangyue rejects implants in his original body, they instead develop the Myriad-Eyed Dao Body. Orochimaru adapts after discovering that Cangyue’s uniqueness prevents unauthorized duplication and that even an authorized clone does not inherit his extraordinary physique or abilities 69.
By this point, Orochimaru considers his old vendetta against Hiruzen insignificant beside cosmic exploration. He nevertheless agrees to continue the Konoha Crush Plan for Cangyue: the Dao Body will attack while Cangyue’s original body appears as Konoha’s defender. Orochimaru also accepts a proposal to develop mobile phones 72 74.
Preparations in Konoha
Orochimaru enters Konoha under advanced camouflage and again attempts to recruit Rasa. He presents the concealed Dao Body as a creation capable of opposing Cangyue, withholding their actual cooperation. Rasa refuses and warns Hiruzen 88 89.
To satisfy Cangyue’s demand for a convincing invasion without permanent casualties, Orochimaru devises cursed seals that preserve body and soul records. He has already spread the seals through airborne spores by the time they finalize the plan at Ichiraku Ramen. His solution still requires genuine death before resurrection 89.
Appearance
Orochimaru has a deathly pale complexion, black hair hanging over his shoulders, and slit pupils. During his later research and Konoha preparations, he wears a spotless white laboratory coat over his clothing 48 88.
- Slit pupils become noticeably animated when he encounters unfamiliar abilities 48 49.
- Snake-associated mannerisms include licking the corner of his mouth and producing objects or replacement bodies through snakes 48 49.
- Later attire includes a white lab coat, with his hands often resting in its pockets 88 90.
Personality
Orochimaru’s scientific curiosity repeatedly overrides caution. Even being impaled does not extinguish his interest in Cangyue’s swords, and he accepts an uncertain dream experiment because the prospect of saving time and materials is too enticing to refuse 48 50.
His habitual probing and opportunism make the early relationship with Cangyue tense. He seeks biological samples, considers exploiting newly acquired dream training, and initially retains an interest in Sasuke. Cangyue’s forceful boundaries make him more circumspect, and he eventually accepts that not every unexplained ability needs to be investigated immediately 49 69.
The interstellar dream leaves him calmer and more reflective, but does not eliminate his calculating behavior. He uses scientific achievements to establish his value as a partner and shifts from old personal grudges toward civilization-building and space exploration 52 68 72.
His ethics remain unsettlingly pragmatic. When asked to avoid lasting casualties, he develops a method that still kills people and replaces their bodies afterward, arguing that preserving the soul preserves the person 89.
Abilities & Skills
Orochimaru-Style Substitution Technique
Orochimaru replaces an impaled body and emerges unharmed from a nearby snake 48.
- The struck body turns to mud.
- He survives repeated chest punctures during subsequent negotiations, describing such wounds as insignificant 49.
- These demonstrations establish unusual survivability, not confirmed real-world immortality.
Blue Eternal Dream
Cangyue grants Orochimaru an ability that trains his body and mind while he sleeps 49.
- Operates at half Cangyue’s training effectiveness in Orochimaru’s documented grant.
- Improves ninjutsu experience and other related techniques that can be trained.
- Requires no demonstrated hand seals, formula, or noticeable chakra fluctuation.
- Orochimaru is the first recipient of Blue Eternal Dream 49.
Biological Engineering and Living Clones
Orochimaru creates complete living duplicates rather than shadow clones 68.
- Uses clones to accelerate research and construction.
- Assigns specialized work: No. 7 handles sage-body genes, No. 8 ocular neural interfaces, and No. 9 overall integration 69.
- Can analyze special physiques, including sage bodies, Hashirama cells, Uzumaki bloodlines, and Ōtsutsuki genes, using knowledge accumulated in the dream 69.
- Cannot independently reproduce Cangyue’s unique existence, enhanced physique, abilities, consciousness, or soul 69.
Ocular Replication and Integration
Orochimaru reproduces genuine ocular powers by analyzing their underlying structures 68.
- Produces Byakugan, Sharingan, Mangekyō Sharingan, and Rinnegan.
- Claims to correct Mangekyō genetic defects and problems normally affecting non-Uchiha users.
- Designs extra neural interfaces for multiple implanted eyes.
- Integrates thirteen eyes into the Myriad-Eyed Dao Body: two Rinnegan, one Byakugan, and ten Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 69.
- The Dao Body’s recreated Rinnegan fully integrate with their host rather than retaining the limitations of transplanted eyes 73.
Concealment
Orochimaru combines optical camouflage and presence masking 88.
- Can remain visible to Rasa while unnoticed by surrounding ninja.
- Conceals himself even from his own passing Otogakure delegation.
- Enters Konoha without triggering the reported barrier or sensing alarms 88 89.
Cursed-Seal Resurrection System
Orochimaru develops seals that record a person’s body and soul for restoration after death 89.
- Spreads the seals through airborne spores.
- Reports marking most people in Konoha.
- Proposes growing replacement bodies that can restore recipients to peak health.
- Requires the recipients to truly die first; no completed mass resurrection is shown in the supplied chapters.
Communication Technology
Orochimaru develops a working third-generation phone and supporting signal towers 74.
- Coverage initially extends through the Land of Rain and parts of the Land of Fire.
- The project follows Cangyue’s argument that communication and entertainment could reduce hostility between nations 72.

- Kimimaro — Leads the Otogakure delegation and follows Orochimaru’s instructions at Konoha’s gate 88.
- Orochimaru’s clones — Living research assistants with assigned specialties; their instruments cannot explain Cangyue’s sudden swordsmanship advancement 69 73.
Notable Quotes
“On the scale of the universe, not just Konoha, but the entire Shinobi World is nothing more than an insignificant speck of dust.” 72
“My future lies among the vast stars.” 72
Trivia
- Orochimaru must wash the snake saliva off the Kusanagi Sword before Cangyue will accept it 49.
- His living clones joke about making another clone to take over their workload 68.
- Clone No. 9 declares, “Physics no longer exists...” after instruments reveal no measurable cause for Cangyue’s instantaneous advancement 73.
- His mass-produced Rinnegan stun Black Zetsu, whose thousand-year schemes had revolved around bringing a single pair into existence 68.
