Background / History
Lin Hao chooses Charmander from Professor Oak’s available starters after Gary has already taken Squirtle. The following day, Lin Hao brings it into Viridian Forest on a delivery mission and encourages the listless Pokémon to perk up and see the world 1 5.
When a rampaging Gyarados attacks, Charmander rushes between it and Lin Hao. Its fire deflects Gyarados’s head, but a tail strike throws it into a tree. After Tyranitar resolves the danger, Lin Hao treats Charmander with a Potion. The injured Pokémon becomes distressed by its failure to protect him and begins evolving 5 6.
As Charmeleon, it remains ashamed until Lin Hao praises its courage and says he will rely on it to watch his back. Reassured, it enthusiastically nuzzles him. Its second evolution occurs during the subsequent Pewter Gym challenge, bringing it from Charmander to Charizard within roughly one day of joining Lin Hao 7 11 12.
Appearance
- Dark-red body: Its Charizard form retains a dark-red coloration rather than being described with a standard appearance 25.
- Exceptional size: Powerfully built and noticeably larger than an ordinary Charizard; the S.S. Anne passage is too narrow for it to spread its wings fully 11 23.
- Broad draconic wings: Emerges from its second evolution hovering above the battlefield 11 25.
- Blue to blue-white tail flame: Its unusual flame color accompanies waves of intense heat 11 23.
- Heat-distorted surroundings: Nearby metal walls glow red and warp simply from its presence 23.
Personality
Charizard’s protective loyalty predates its strength. As a frail Charmander, it attacks a rampaging Gyarados without hesitation to shield Lin Hao. Its subsequent shame comes from being unable to keep him safe, not from losing a battle. Lin Hao’s reassurance restores its confidence and prompts an openly affectionate response 5 6 7.
In battle, it is obedient and capable of carefully controlling its performance. It accepts Lin Hao’s instructions to disguise easy victories as difficult contests, deliberately staggering, panting, and prolonging attack clashes. It addresses him as “Master” when responding to his mental commands 40 41 47.
Abilities & Skills
Solar Power
Its Hidden Ability produces an extraordinary surge of heat when Lin Hao activates it during the Pewter Gym battle 11.
- Turns Charmeleon’s skin blazing crimson and extends its tail flame to the Gym ceiling.
- Melts the parts of Onix wrapped around it, breaking Bind.
- Immediately precedes its evolution into Charizard.
Blue-White Fire and Radiant Heat
Charizard’s flames are explicitly hotter than those of an ordinary Charizard. Steven later judges their temperature to be far beyond Elite Four level 12 40.
- Rock melting: Converts parts of Onix into glasslike material and melts Rhydon’s Stone Edge projectiles into magma 11 40.
- Metal melting: Warps passage walls and burns a large hole through the S.S. Anne’s iron cargo-hold door 23.
- Attack evaporation: Vaporizes Arbok’s incoming Acid before it can reach Lin Hao 23.
- Environmental heating: Evaporates Lapras’s street-covering frost within a second, raising the temperature from below freezing to over thirty degrees 25.
- Collateral effects: Its heat affects nearby allies and spectators as well as opponents; recalling it allows the surrounding temperature to fall 23 25 40.
Flamethrower
Charizard fires blue-white pillars of flame without an apparent charging delay 11.
- Produces a beam more than a meter across immediately after evolving 11.
- Uses a nearly two-meter-wide blast to defeat Team Rocket’s Arbok, Raticate, and Weezing together aboard the S.S. Anne 23.
Fire Blast
Its Fire Blast takes the form of an enormous blue-white blaze shaped like the character 大 25.
- Overwhelms Lorelei’s Lapras’s Ice Beam; the resulting heat throws Lapras into the Gym wall even without a direct flame hit 25.
- Counters Dragonite’s Hyper Beam while Charizard deliberately pretends to struggle 41.
- Pushes back Salamence’s Hyper Beam after a staged ten-second clash 47.
Flight and Seismic Toss
Charizard combines flight with enough physical strength to seize and carry a charging Dragonite 41.
- Catches Dragonite during Dragon Rush, interrupting the attack.
- Flies upward with Dragonite, spins through dozens of circles, and slams it into the battlefield.
- Knocks Dragonite unconscious and leaves a deep crater.
Battle Acting and Restraint
Charizard helps Lin Hao conceal the gap between his team and its opponents 41 47.
- Feigns fatigue through groaning, swaying, and heavy breathing 41.
- Deliberately retreats half a step during beam clashes 41 47.
- Restrains its firepower to make an overwhelming victory appear narrowly won 47.
Relationships
- Lin Hao — Trainer and the focus of its protective instincts. His praise helps it overcome its early self-doubt; it later follows his commands to fight, hold back, and act convincingly 5 7 41 47.
- May — Traveling companion and witness to its rapid growth. She repeatedly worries about unfavorable matchups and reports its unusual flames to Lance 7 11 17 40 41.
- Pikachu — Teammate. Watches Lin Hao treat the injured Charmander and reacts disdainfully to Charmeleon’s affectionate nuzzling; both later contribute to the Indigo League final 6 7 47.
- Ho-Oh and Groudon — Jealous of the affection Charmeleon receives from Lin Hao. Their threats are stopped by Lin Hao; Groudon later comments on Charizard’s deliberately exaggerated struggle against Dragonite 7 41.
- Greninja — Teammate in the championship final. Greninja defeats Garchomp before Charizard takes the final matchup against Salamence 47.

Trivia
- May reports that Charmander evolved directly into Charizard and “skipped a stage,” although the depicted sequence explicitly includes Charmeleon 7 11 17.
- Lin Hao invents several explanations for its strength: “internal heat,” magnesium powder in its mouth, and a diet of chili peppers. These are concealment excuses, not established sources of its power 12 25.
- Charizard’s tournament damage appears on Lin Hao’s repair bill: 800,000 for lava damage and 2.3 million attributed to Seismic Toss. The latter is labeled damage to the Finals Stadium, although the depicted final ends with Fire Blast against Salamence 47 49.
