Background / History
Before transmigrating, Lin Hao was an office worker revising a presentation during overtime. Having grown tired of corporate life, he wants his new existence to revolve around rest rather than work. He awakens to Ho-Oh addressing him as the ruler of the entire Pokédex, with Arceus and numerous other Legendary Pokémon already waiting to meet him 1.
His assigned Pallet Town identity has no verifiable history. When League Investigator Zhou Yuan searches for him, the only result is a Trainer registration created three days earlier and sponsored by Professor Oak. Household, medical, educational, and international searches uncover no other records, prompting Lorelei to investigate Oak’s connection to him 24.
Appearance
Lin Hao is described as a handsome, ordinary-looking boy. His outward appearance gives little indication of the Legendary Pokémon surrounding him 1 8.
- Hair: Has bangs that are blown out of place by Onix’s roar 11.
- Clothing: Initially wears an ordinary sweatshirt; later wears a cap and a jacket bought on sale 1 4 35.
- Bearing: Often appears sleepy or half-hearted, yawning and walking with his hands in his pockets even before important battles 11 38 47.
- Divine mark: Arceus’s Light Scale merges into the back of his hand as a discreet mark 38.
Personality
Lin Hao is openly lazy and comfort-seeking. He prioritizes sleep, fishing, good food, and free accommodation over prestige or responsibility. He enters the Indigo Conference for its cash prize and hopes to build a villa where he can wake naturally each day and travel with his Pokémon 26 37 48.
His insistence that he is “ordinary” is a deliberate cover, maintained through deadpan humor and implausible explanations. He attributes overwhelming attacks to static electricity, internal heat, chili peppers, batteries, or spinach. When May probes his secrets, he recognizes her purpose despite appearing drowsy and indifferent 2 12 25 32 39 45.
Beneath his evasiveness, he is affectionate toward his Pokémon. He praises Charmeleon for protecting him rather than criticizing its weakness, and carefully wipes sauce from Pikachu’s face while warning it about sharp lobster shells. These moments help May reconsider the League’s portrayal of him as dangerous 7 32.
He prefers restraint to unnecessary force: he orders Deoxys not to fight Steven, excludes his Legendary Pokémon from the tournament to preserve fairness and the stadium, and refuses Mewtwo’s offer to erase May’s memories. His concern for secrecy does not always translate into caution, however—his Pokémon’s fights and staged tournament performances generate substantial property damage 3 27 38 45 49.
Abilities & Skills
Full Pokédex System
The system begins fully unlocked, with all 898 Pokémon in position and Lin Hao’s level already at maximum 1.
- System Space: Houses his bound Pokémon; Lin Hao can recall them, forbid their release, and enter the space with his consciousness 1 37.
- Detection: Its detection needle reacts to disturbances in Viridian Forest 4.
- Energy analysis: Identifies unknown mythical energy, an awakening gene chain, and interference involving unknown laws around the research-station egg 8.
- Unexplained operation: The system does not answer when he initially calls to it; its complete mechanics are not established 1.
Telepathy and Pokémon Command
Lin Hao communicates mentally with his Pokémon and issues orders without speaking aloud 2 3 7.
- Directs Ho-Oh to hide its wings or shrink inside his cap 2 4.
- Maintains contact with Deoxys during Steven’s capture attempt at Mt. Moon 3.
- Cuts off Telepathy or seals the system space’s commentary when his companions become disruptive 7 31.
- Enforces discipline through confinement and the withdrawal of premium Pokéblocks 4 27 30.
Pokémon Empowerment
Lin Hao can bring out strength far beyond that expected from ordinary Pokémon 11 39.
- Ability activation: Directly activates Charmeleon’s Hidden Ability, Solar Power, during its struggle with Onix 11.
- Maximum physical attack: Mewtwo states that Lin Hao gave Pikachu maximum-level physical attack, explaining its ability to stop Machamp one-handed 39.
- Uncertain limits: Lance suspects that he can empower ordinary Pokémon, but the full mechanism and extent remain unknown to the League 17.
Battle Direction and Concealment
Lin Hao controls both his Pokémon’s attacks and the impression their battles create 41 44 47.
- Orders reduced power to avoid injuring opponents or revealing too much strength 2.
- Has Charizard fake fatigue against Dragonite and Pikachu exaggerate the effect of Metagross’s attack 41 44.
- Scripts the championship final as a series of apparently hard-fought victories 47.
- Refuses Legendary participation in ordinary competition because of unfairness, destruction, and unwanted attention 38.
- Restraint is imperfect: even held-back attacks overwhelm opponents, and theatrical battles still damage tournament facilities 2 49.
Physical Feats and Threat Awareness
- Climbs the cliff at Mt. Moon as easily as walking on flat ground, a feat attributed to his maximum-level Trainer status 3.
- Tears apart Team Rocket’s insulated electric net to free Clefairy 18.
- Notices Team Rocket’s surveillance before May realizes he is aware of the agents 36.
- Practical limitation: Admits that he cannot drive a speedboat, then operates a captured one like a game console until it runs out of fuel 33.
Pokémon Companions
| Pokémon | Connection and documented role |
|---|---|
| Pikachu | Recruited from a roadside flower bed as a cover partner. Its exceptional durability, electrical output, and physical strength carry numerous Gym and tournament victories 1 16 30 39 44. |
| Charizard | Received from Oak as a Shiny Charmander with Solar Power. Protects Lin Hao from Gyarados, evolves twice, and later defeats Brock’s Onix, Lorelei’s Lapras, Wataru Kaze’s Dragonite, and Tatsuya’s Salamence 5 7 11 25 41 47. |
| Greninja | Newly captured by the Fuchsia City arc. Its former Trainer’s death connects it to Team Rocket; it eagerly defeats pursuing agents and later wins against Sabrina’s Alakazam and Tatsuya’s Garchomp 36 37 47. |
| Runic Eevee | A mythical law-mutated hatchling that calls Lin Hao “Daddy.” Travels in his backpack and receives his affection; its golden markings interest Professor Oak 9 10 17 26. |
| Ho-Oh | Devoted protector whose exposed wings, feathers, and unsolicited appearances repeatedly threaten Lin Hao’s secrecy 1 2 3 4. |
| Deoxys (“Big Red”) | Obeys Lin Hao even when ordered not to resist Steven. Lin Hao retrieves it from Mt. Moon and presents it as his pet 3 4. |
| Tyranitar | Intervenes against the rampaging Gyarados. May witnesses it emerging from Lin Hao’s shadow, though he claims it was a passing wild Pokémon 6 7. |
| Mewtwo | Protective companion and frequent commentator from System Space. Offers to erase May’s memories, then later restrains the other Legendaries from acting against her without permission 45 48. |
| Arceus | Stops the backyard Legendary brawl and gives Lin Hao a Light Scale that can summon it in an emergency 27 38. |
| Other bound Pokémon | Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Dialga, Palkia, and Zapdos are among the powerful beings associated with his system. Palkia destroys a spatial rift while speaking through Lin Hao 1 8 15 31 37. |
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Light Scale: Arceus’s protective gift, merged into his hand. Calling Arceus’s true name in danger will summon it; the scale later reacts to a formidable presence in Johto 38 49.
- Pokédex: Uses a Pokédex during his journey and receives a new one through Red for Professor Oak’s Johto data-collection assignment 49.
- Divine and premium Pokéblocks: Feeds Pikachu a rainbow-shimmering Divine Pokéblock while claiming it is a cheap artificial snack; also uses premium Pokéblocks as rewards and disciplinary leverage 15 27.
- Oversized Moon Stone: Receives a rare stone from the Clefairy leader after freeing its group, then makes May carry it 18.
- Mewtwo Project hard drive: Possession of the drive makes him a target for Team Rocket’s pursuit and recruitment efforts 36 43.
- Eight Kanto Gym Badges: Completes the set before entering the Indigo Conference 37.
Relationships
