History
Investigating Lin Hao
May first appears wearing a red top and bandanna, insisting that Lin Hao attend Professor Oak’s starter ceremony rather than stay home. Afterward, she notices Pikachu’s unusual demeanor and questions how a supposedly ordinary roadside Pokémon could defeat Team Rocket’s Arbok in one attack. She identifies herself as a Pokémon investigator and follows Lin Hao to uncover his secrets 1 2.
Her suspicions deepen after his encounter with Steven at Mt. Moon and Tyranitar’s intervention in Viridian Forest. She accompanies Lin Hao on Oak’s delivery mission, interprets a frightened Jynx’s gestures, and confronts Team Rocket over stolen Caterpie 4 5 6 7.
At the research station, Lin Hao shields May from the destruction caused by a mysterious Egg’s hatching. The resulting rune-marked Eevee attaches itself to him and calls him “Daddy.” After escaping researcher Ake, May reveals her Kanto League Special Investigator ID and demands an explanation 8 9.
May then presents a top-secret dossier connecting Lin Hao to “Big Red,” legendary-tier Tyranitar, and Pikachu’s extraordinary lightning. Unable to obtain a confession, she announces that League orders require her to monitor him around the clock 10.
From Surveillance to Sponsorship
After witnessing Charizard’s rapid evolution and Pikachu’s destruction of the Cerulean Gym’s battle pool, May privately reports Lin Hao to Lance. She offers to summon Special Forces to arrest him, but Lance forbids it: he fears the League could not stop Lin Hao if he became hostile. May is instead ordered to remain close, comply with his demands, and avoid provoking him 11 16 17.
Despite her suspicion, May uses her credentials to return Pokémon stolen aboard the S.S. Anne and defends Lin Hao when Lt. Surge confronts him over the damaged cargo hold. She explains that his intervention recovered the passengers’ Pokémon 23 24.
Following Lin Hao’s victory over Lorelei, May records him as a top-priority threat and urges Professor Oak to intervene. Oak cautions her against judging an extraordinary person by ordinary standards 25 26.
Lance subsequently orders May to become Lin Hao’s “traveling companion,” keep him in Kanto, and cover his expenses with League reimbursement. She conceals the official arrangement, claiming that she personally wants to travel with him and pay for his food and lodging 28.
Doubting the League’s Judgment
At Vermilion Gym, May invokes her authority to prevent Lt. Surge from carrying out threats of physical violence against Lin Hao. Although she repeatedly fears for his safety during the battle, Pikachu defeats Raichu and Lin Hao collects the Thunder Badge 29 30 31.
A quieter moment afterward changes her assessment more profoundly. Watching Lin Hao gently wipe sauce from Pikachu’s face and protect it from sharp lobster shell, May begins questioning whether he is truly dangerous. In her report to Lance, she downplays his victory as luck and describes him as gentle. Lance dismisses that kindness as an act 32.
The League’s instructions become more intrusive after Lin Hao defeats armed smugglers and takes their speedboat. Charles Goodshow orders May to keep him on the League’s side by indulging his wishes, even suggesting compliance with romantic demands. May objects but is overruled 33.
The Mewtwo Project Evidence
Near Fuchsia City, May attempts to help an injured Greninja and scans its identity, discovering an encrypted file with no record of wild habitation. When Lin Hao refuses the hard drive carried by Greninja, she accepts it as evidence preserved at the cost of its trainer’s life 34 35.
May decrypts the drive and uncovers Team Rocket’s Mewtwo Project, a plan to create an artificial Pokémon using rare genes. She wants to deliver the evidence to League headquarters, but Lin Hao warns that decryption likely alerted Team Rocket. She subsequently identifies disguised agents following them through Fuchsia City 35 36.
Indigo League and Rejection of Her Assignment
May accompanies Lin Hao to the Indigo League under a League-approved reporter’s cover. She studies his opponents, warns him about dangerous matchups, and urges him to take preparations seriously 37 38 39 40 41 44.
Before the final, Goodshow and Lance task her with uncovering Lin Hao’s remaining Pokémon and hidden trump cards. May visits his room late at night, but cannot bring herself to press the interrogation. She instead says she is worried about him. Lin Hao recognizes the probing and refuses Mewtwo’s offer to erase her memories 44 45.
After Lin Hao wins the championship, May reveals the League’s orders, including authorization to use seduction to secure his cooperation. She refuses to betray someone who saved her life and helped recover Greninja’s evidence, then destroys the encrypted Communicator containing her assignment 47 48.
May insists on staying as Lin Hao’s bodyguard in exchange for room and board. He accepts reluctantly, with the additional condition that she pay for takeout 48.
Johto Journey
In Violet City, festival crowds force May and Lin Hao to take the last available room, which has only one bed. May initially objects, but relaxes when he falls asleep and talks about food rather than making advances 50.
The following morning, May relays Lance’s report of Team Galactic activity in Johto. When Lin Hao refuses to investigate, she threatens to publicize the penalty that consumed his championship winnings. He gives in, and they head toward the ancient tower to search for clues 50.
Appearance
- Clothing: Introduced in a red top and bandanna 1.
- Additional clothing: Wears a skirt aboard the S.S. Anne and pajamas during late-night conversations at the Indigo Plateau 21 45.
- Expressive reactions: Frequently blushes when Lin Hao teases her or when their closeness becomes awkward 7 10 48.
Personality
May is persistent, skeptical, and quick to challenge explanations that do not fit what she has witnessed. She refuses to accept Lin Hao’s claims of ordinariness, documents suspicious incidents, and repeatedly confronts him over his Pokémon’s impossible abilities 2 10 16 26.
Her sense of duty extends beyond surveillance. She intervenes against Pokémon thieves, rushes toward cries for help, and accepts responsibility for evidence that another investigator died protecting. Even when intimidated by Lt. Surge, she uses her position to stop him from threatening Lin Hao 7 18 29 35.
May’s judgment gradually shifts from institutional suspicion to personal trust. Lin Hao’s affection for his Pokémon makes her question Lance’s warnings, and she ultimately places loyalty to him above an assignment she considers deceitful. She remains practical and demanding afterward, pushing him to investigate threats despite his preference for sleep and food 32 48 50.
Her feelings toward Lin Hao include embarrassment, admiration, and apparent jealousy. His tenderness toward Charmeleon flusters her, his courage briefly attracts her, and she bristles when the Cerulean Sisters flirt with him. She nevertheless denies being his girlfriend 7 15 29.
