Background / History
Lin Hao finds Pikachu eating a Berry beside the road while accompanying May to Professor Oak’s laboratory. He picks Pikachu up and declares it his “starter partner” to help him keep up appearances. Pikachu is bewildered by the arrangement; Lin Hao later states that he never formally caught it. Oak separately gives Lin Hao a Charmander 1 10.
Pikachu’s first battles immediately undermine its intended role as an ordinary-looking companion. It knocks out a Team Rocket Arbok with a small fraction of its strength, then defeats Red’s Pikachu despite being instructed to use minimum power. These incidents prompt May to investigate its origins and Lin Hao’s concealed strength 2.
Appearance
- Small, yellow, and chubby: Pikachu’s harmless appearance repeatedly leads opponents to underestimate it 13 21.
- Red cheek sacs: Its electric sacs glow with golden electricity before attacks 21.
- Metallic tail during attacks: Its tail hardens and develops a metallic sheen when striking Koffing 13.
- Habitual shoulder perch: It commonly travels sprawled or dozing on Lin Hao’s shoulder 5 7 12.
Personality
Pikachu shares Lin Hao’s preference for food and minimal effort. It spends much of the journey half-asleep, ignores an initial request to battle at Cerulean Gym, and becomes immediately attentive when promised extra food. Even captivity fails to disturb its appetite: it calmly eats Team Rocket’s chips and crackers while the thieves panic over having captured it 5 16 22 23.
Its relaxed manner conceals confidence and a mischievous streak. Pikachu rolls its eyes at instructions to act ordinary, helps support Lin Hao’s fabricated explanations, and later stages injuries to make effortless victories look competitive. It also shows affection toward Lin Hao and compassion toward Greninja, comforting the grieving newcomer by sharing food 2 10 32 35 44 47.
Abilities & Skills
Electrical Attacks
Pikachu possesses system-maxed Special Attack and produces electricity far beyond what opponents expect from its species 31.
- Thunderbolt: Electrifies and heats the entire Cerulean Gym pool, defeats Goldeen, and shatters the Gym’s lights 16.
- Overwhelming absorption defenses: Its unrestricted Thunderbolt defeats Raichu despite Volt Absorb. Lin Hao explains that Pikachu’s voltage exceeds Raichu’s absorption capacity 31.
- Thunder: Defeats a Team Rocket pursuit squad’s Pokémon and evaporates Venomoth’s poisonous powder 34 36.
- Practical utility: Welds the research station doors shut so Lin Hao and May can escape Ake 9.
- Range control: Can narrow an attack’s area when instructed to avoid catastrophic damage, though even restrained attacks can cause substantial collateral damage 16 21.
Physical Strength and Mega Punch
Pikachu’s physical attack is system-enhanced to max-level strength 37 39.
- Tears open an alloy cage with its paws 23.
- Catches a thirty-kilogram Raichu one-handed and throws it into a wall 30.
- Stops Machamp’s charge with one hand without cracking the ground beneath itself, then wins with a shoulder throw 39.
- Uses Mega Punch to tear through multiple Flamethrowers and knock out Houndoom 34.
- Combines Mega Punch with lightning to defeat Iron Defense’s seven-hundred-kilogram Shiny Metagross in one blow 44.
Exceptional Durability
Pikachu’s defense is already maxed well before the Indigo League semifinal 44.
- Takes Goldeen’s Water Gun and Raichu’s full-power Thunderbolt without visible injury 16 30.
- Remains unharmed when Victreebel’s Razor Leaf strikes its body; the leaves shatter on contact 42.
- Blocks Metagross’s Meteor Mash without losing a hair 44.
- Withstands Tyranitar’s Earthquake unharmed before pretending to be injured 47.
- The narration states that it could withstand several Hydro Pumps from Kyogre, but no such confrontation is shown 16.
Quick Attack and Iron Tail
- Quick Attack: Moves out of sight before striking Ekans hard enough to send it through a brick wall 13.
- Tail strike: Generates a gust that clears Koffing’s Smokescreen before knocking it away. Lin Hao disguises the attack with the invented name “Static Tail Swing” 13.
- Adapted Iron Tail: Applies the move’s metallic power directly to its foot and kicks Electrode away before Self-Destruct can activate 28.
- Restrained Iron Tail: Defeats Tatsuya’s Tyranitar during the Indigo League final 47.
Acting and Concealment
Pikachu helps Lin Hao conceal the extent of his team’s power 10 44 47.
- Releases a faint spark to support Lin Hao’s claim that it merely suffers from a severe static-electricity problem 10.
- Yawns on cue when Lin Hao claims it has “used up” its Static and needs a day off 11.
- Deliberately skids backward after Meteor Mash to suggest that Metagross has put it under pressure 44.
- Screams, rolls backward, and clutches its stomach after an Earthquake that has not injured it 47.
Relationships
- Lin Hao — Trainer and traveling partner. Pikachu obeys his battle and acting instructions, shares his appetite, and affectionately nuzzles his fingers when he cleans its mouth and serves it shelled lobster 1 32 47.
- May — Traveling companion and investigator. She initially questions Pikachu’s demeanor, repeatedly challenges explanations for its strength, and insists on rescuing it aboard the S.S. Anne 2 16 22.
- Red and Red’s Pikachu — Early opponents. Red recognizes Pikachu’s strength and later describes its aura as unusually steady and impossible to read. Pikachu responds to the other Pikachu’s friendly greeting by opening one eye and returning to sleep 2 19.
- Greninja — Teammate whom Pikachu comforts by sharing a cracker after the death of Greninja’s former Trainer 35.
- Ho-Oh — A vocal defender of Pikachu, calling it the strongest when Zapdos mocks Raichu’s electrical power 31.
- Jessie, James, and Meowth — Recurring enemies who come to fear both Pikachu and its connection to Lin Hao. They try to release it after discovering it among the Pokémon stolen aboard the S.S. Anne 13 22.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Journey and First Gym Challenges
- Pikachu’s defeat of Arbok becomes photographic evidence in May’s investigation into the mysterious “Full Pokédex” powerhouse. Lin Hao’s genetic-mutation explanation is an excuse, not an established origin for its strength 10.
- Behind Pewter Gym, Pikachu stops Team Rocket’s attempt to steal the Crystal Onix, defeating Ekans, Koffing, and the trio 12 13.
- At Cerulean Gym, its victory over Goldeen earns Lin Hao the Cascade Badge. The damage to the pool and lighting prompts Lin Hao to leave before being charged for repairs; May subsequently reports its power to Lance 16 17.
S.S. Anne
- Pikachu joins Lin Hao at the seafood buffet and defeats Xiao Ming’s elite Scyther on the battle deck 20 21.
- During Team Rocket’s restaurant robbery, it is taken to Cargo Hold Three with the stolen Pokémon. Its continued snacking contrasts with May’s urgency and the thieves’ terror 21 22.
- After Charizard clears the passage, Pikachu breaks out of its own cage and returns to Lin Hao’s shoulder. Jessie, James, and their leader flee into the sea rather than fight 23.
