Recruitment and Advancement
- Rogue cultivator recruitment: Generous rewards include Three-Turn Golden Cores, which can grant ordinary early- or middle-stage Core Formation cultivators at least a century’s worth of cultivation 811.
- Absorption of defeated sects: West River Gate members at Foundation Establishment and above receive special admission offers. Many join, including Shao Li, shortly before their former stronghold falls 1289 1290.
- Merit-based cultivation support: Rewards and advancement provisions are allocated according to contributions. Shao Li earns repeated commendations and consideration for a mid-ranking elder position after more than twenty years of service 1392.
- Restricted secret-art transmission: Shao Li receives a Great Power-refined Dao seed of Three Pure Ones from One Breath, rather than its complete true transmission 1392.
Doctrine and Institutional Outlook
The Alliance presents the Outer Dao’s various paths as branches of a common tree, united against demons, machines, and rebels. Its strength rests on accomplished cultivators, inherited divine abilities, and the spiritual resources of immortal mountains and blessed lands 811 1161.
Its opposition to Li Chen extends beyond territory. Hong An challenges Li Chen’s claim to seek unity and equality, arguing that his vision requires others to submit to his ideals and the Puppet Dao. During the attack on Materialized Heaven, the Alliance’s Great Powers seek to weaken and contain him so that he cannot successfully establish his Dao 1219.
Traditional cultivation assumptions become an internal fault line after repeated defeats. Qi Yuanhe criticizes the tendency to dismiss external paths while senior cultivators themselves rely on superior pills and treasures. He argues that tools, medicine, materials, and land are indispensable parts of cultivation rather than distractions from it 1322.
Military and Intelligence Capabilities
High-Rank Cultivation Forces
- Elite concentration: The Alliance fields numerous experts with refined spells and divine abilities, supported by superior spiritual roots, aptitudes, and resource-rich blessed lands 1161.
- Primordial Spirit leadership: Great Powers personally lead decisive operations and wield powers of law that conventional armies cannot reliably overcome through numbers alone 1219 1290.
- Wartime enhancement: Secret techniques temporarily elevate Foundation Establishment troops through blood cores and produce false or half-step Nascent Soul combatants 1205.
- Deep reserves: Some experts possess resurrection or escape methods. Li Chen cautions that destroying a body does not necessarily eliminate a cultivator whose true spirit survives 1226.
Formations and Dao Artifacts
- Heavenly Dao Four Swords: The Heavenly Sword Sect’s ancient sect-guarding treasures possess power comparable to the Primordial Spirit Realm and combine into a renowned sword formation 1205.
- Twelve Golden Immortals Formation: An ancient formation used with the Four Swords to imprison the Giant Kun, isolate communications, and distort the time available for outside intervention 1205 1221.
- Myriad Worlds Banner: A spatial Dao artifact of the Wandering Immortal Blessed Land. Zong Yiyang uses it to carry an investigation party through the Bone Kun Warship’s neutron-star-matter shell 1423.
Intelligence and Covert Operations
- Divination: The Alliance uses divination to locate enemies, although Creation Sect interference can sever connections and conceal targets 1175.
- Transportation lockdowns: Branches seal travel routes during manhunts and compel local cooperation through senior decrees 918.
- Heavenly Net infiltration: Low-ranking female Sword Dao cultivators pose as Puppet Dao rogue cultivators to approach Li Chen. Recorded divine-sense signatures restrict the use of higher-ranked agents 1184.
- Supply-chain penetration: Agents exploit subcontractors and middlemen to place Great Power Edict Talisman power in materials bound for Materialized Heaven 1193.
- Multiple parallel schemes: Investigators pursue planted students, marked Temporal Dao materials, modified organs, material tracing, and city infiltration rather than relying on one uncertain lead 1184.
- Raids and assassination: Sword cultivators attack public gatherings, while other forces strike mines and transport infrastructure 1195.
Documented Weaknesses
| Weakness | Battlefield Consequence |
|---|---|
| Dependence on spells and divine abilities | Grand void spirit iron renders customary bombardment ineffective, while spirit-repelling formations suppress high-rank attackers 1177 1211. |
| Reliance on living troops | Casualties permanently remove cultivators, whereas Puppet Masters can often survive the loss of their combat puppets 1250. |
| Inferior production and transport | Materialized Heaven’s aircraft, factories, and mass-produced armies outpace the Alliance’s lower- and middle-rank forces 1250 1257 1269. |
| Limited coalition unity | Shared victories expose competing interests; later, local powers defect to Xuanling to preserve their existing authority 820 1466. |
| Faulty assessment of Li Chen | Commanders underestimate his creation power and assume destroying expendable troops will exhaust his material reserves 1221. |
| Dependence on spiritual energy | During Dharma’s Decline, cultivators unable to use their spells and swords are overwhelmed by Puppet Dao war machines 1480. |
Background / History
Vast Sea Campaign and Pursuit of Li Chen
The Alliance coordinates a widening campaign against the Puppet Dao, recruiting rogue cultivators and pressuring independent organizations such as the Hecheng and Everflow Merchants’ Associations. Dong Long reports that factions refusing recruitment face destruction. Li Chen interprets this as preparation for lasting control of the Vast Sea rather than a temporary raid 811 812.
After an initial victory, cooperation with the Righteous Qi Continent’s forces weakens as their interests diverge. Enemy groups scatter through Guangyun, raiding settlements and searching unsuccessfully for Li Chen. The destruction of Guangyun is ultimately attributed to Fang Yuan of the Righteous Qi Continent, although it is closely connected to the Alliance-organized offensive 820 1226.
The Alliance later organizes a formal manhunt. Elder Fang and Envoy You bring Great Elder Hong’s decree to Windward Lodge, where local branches have already halted outbound travel. The operation prioritizes capturing Li Chen, while also offering a reward for killing him. In Cloudstride City, Alliance arrivals destroy his hidden surveillance assets and tighten control over the Market Fair 918 929.
Reversals Against the Puppet Dao
Cloud-Raising Immortal City’s return to battle overturns Alliance expectations. Its grand void spirit iron defenses withstand conventional attacks, and its puppet forces inflict heavy casualties. Chu Yun Peak, a Fang clan stronghold with nearby market districts and tens of thousands of stationed Alliance disciples, falls on the seventh day of the assault 1177.
The Alliance develops covert methods to reach Li Chen’s hidden domain and undermine the Puppet Dao from within. An agent surnamed Huo eventually penetrates a subcontracted supply route. Elsewhere, assassins kill more than a dozen people during Lin Yuanji’s Imperial Road celebration, while raids damage southern mines and destroy a newly built bridge 1184 1193 1195.
Failed Assault on Materialized Heaven
The Alliance secretly concentrates experts for an attack on Li Chen. Its forces imprison the Giant Kun, cut outside communications, and launch a mass invasion while concealed Great Powers seek decisive openings 1202 1205.
Fang Weiqi’s party advances toward Li Chen using Xia Ziyi’s karmic connection as a guide. Inside the fortified abode, spirit-repelling materials and the Sacred Spirit Grand Formation neutralize their usual advantages. Xiao Die and Xiao Ying overwhelm the intruders; a seal linked to Great Elder Hong fails, and Fang dies believing Hong has betrayed them 1207 1218.
Hong An later admits that the infiltrators’ deaths provided valuable intelligence. Nevertheless, the wider attack fails. The Alliance’s three Great Powers retreat, abandoning troops trapped inside; Li Chen pursues and destroys Zong Yiyang’s body and divine soul, although a fragment of his true spirit survives 1219 1221 1226.
| Force or Loss | Recorded Outcome |
|---|---|
| 23 Nascent Soul experts | Twenty killed 1226. |
| 125 half-step Nascent Soul and peak Core Formation cultivators | Reported wiped out 1226. |
| 300 Core Formation cultivators | Reported slain 1226. |
| Nearly 10,000 false Core Formation cultivators | Reported slain; slightly more than a thousand attackers are taken away through a secret art attributed, tentatively, to Spirit Firmament Gate elder Gao Yan 1226. |
| Zong Yiyang | Body and divine soul destroyed; recovery from his remaining true-spirit fragment may require decades or longer 1226. |
| Materialized Heaven | Loses 5,654 people, prompting Li Chen’s vow to destroy the Alliance and overthrow the order obstructing his path 1226. |
Cloud Province Defeat and Peace
The Alliance continues resisting through reinforcements and targeted counteroffensives. Elite teams seize underground cities and kill Insect Queen avatars, but West River Gate eventually collapses after much of its membership accepts Alliance admission 1278 1289 1290.
Cloudthunder Sect becomes the major remaining center of resistance in the Equal Sea Domain. After Divine Mist Mountain falls, Puppet Dao forces breach Cloudview Heaven, effectively settling Li Chen’s eleven-year Cloud Province Campaign. Alliance troops evacuate valuable leaders and disciples instead of maintaining a doomed defense 1259 1320.
The defeat strengthens the peace and reform factions. Negotiations progress to a formal signing attended by Dharma King Yuanhao, Pei Bairen, and Hong An. The treaty forbids direct attacks for sixty years, but economic and ideological competition continues 1332 1335 1449.
Espionage and the “Heavenly Ghost”
Shao Li serves within the Alliance for more than twenty years before a soul-dividing Dao seed awakens his concealed identity as an incarnation of Li Chen. Other planted agents activate with him. Li Chen breaks through the Sky-Gazing Terrace’s formation, retrieves their accumulated information, and leaves despite Lin Xi’s accusation that he has violated the treaty 1392 1393.
After Li Chen attains the Dao, Alliance records lose clear references to him and Materialized Heaven, replacing them with “Heavenly Ghost.” Outsiders struggle to perceive or remember him. During a later investigation inside his domain, Hong An recovers his memories and urges the party to flee, while Zong Yiyang still cannot remember Li Chen 1411 1417 1423.
Immortal Coffins and Xuanling’s Takeover
Alarmed by Puppet Dao advances, Alliance leaders open ancient Immortal Coffins to restore spiritual energy and regain their high-rank advantage. The seventh coffin’s fortune laws instead reveal auspicious signs over Puppet Dao territory and deathly omens over the Alliance. Yuanhao immediately opens the sixth coffin, associated with heart-demon tribulations 1449 1453.
Yuanhao’s obsession escalates into attempts to open still more dangerous coffins. The Alliance turns against him, and a presence speaking through him identifies itself as Immortal King Xuanling. News subsequently confirms that Xuanling has possessed Yuanhao and intends to restore the Heavenly Court and Immortal Kingdom Era 1456 1460.
The Alliance requests Puppet Dao assistance, and Shen Longcheng agrees to set aside their disputes. Xuanling nevertheless conquers the Upper Clear Sect and Spirit Firmament Gate, then attacks or recruits other major powers. The Alliance’s central order collapses as he proclaims himself Immortal Emperor 1460.
Fragmentation and Dharma’s Decline
Local powers increasingly favor Xuanling because his rule preserves the authority of their clans, sects, and spirit-peak holdings. Surviving Alliance leaders face wavering followers, while Puppet Dao magnates abandon cooperation to pursue their own territorial gains 1466.
The remaining leaders seek further contact with the Puppet Dao as Dharma’s Decline worsens. Instead, Puppet Dao forces attack them despite their shared opposition to Xuanling. Traditional cultivators subsequently suffer devastating losses as spiritual-energy-dependent abilities fail. Former Alliance veterans serving Xuanling retain access to sect, clan, and communal treasures, carrying part of the Alliance’s accumulated wealth into his camp 1476 1477 1480 1482.
Reform and Economic Policy
Qi Yuanhe’s Proposals
Following the Central Sea defeats, Qi Yuanhe proposes preserving the Alliance through negotiated concessions and controlled imitation of Puppet Dao methods 1321 1322.
- Peace settlement: Cede the western Central Sea to preserve Wufu, Nan Province, and Pian Province; seek the Golden Roc Great Sage’s support as a buffer 1321.
- Pilot domains: Retain three Western Central Sea domains for gradual reform 1322.
- Industrial development: Prioritize Artifact and Pill Dao workshops, supporting industries, markets, and practical training 1322.
- Professional recognition: Establish ranks for external-path practitioners and assess candidates by skill rather than conventional selection or combat contests 1322.
- Administrative changes: Appoint prominent Artifact and Pill Dao masters as domain lords and broaden admissions 1322.
- Economic safeguards: Regulate land and resource ownership, encourage cooperative investment, and use contracts and oaths to restrain abuses 1322.
Great Elder Hong endorses the proposals for further review. Pian Province later operates as a reform testing ground, with Medicine Gardens, Production Yards, and attempts to develop modern pill factories 1322 1362.
Corruption and Unrest
- Pian Province mining scandal: A proposed deal falsely classifies productive public Spirit Mines as exhausted so the Heavenly Reach Money House can acquire them cheaply 1360.
- Disappearing whistleblower: An Alliance Steward exposes the scheme, prompting a senior investigation and stopping the transfer. He later disappears; even Great Power divination fails to locate him. Li Chen suspects murder, but his fate remains unconfirmed 1360.
- Rebel concessions: Faced with costly unrest, the Alliance attempts appeasement and local concessions rather than sacrificing cultivators to suppression. Materialized Heaven maintains secret contact and trade with rebel forces 1362 1380.
Immortal Coffins
The coffins are ancient reserves kept in an otherworldly grotto-heaven within Immortal Rest Mountain. Their powers can alter the world’s cultivation environment rather than merely strengthen individual fighters 1453 1454.
| Coffin | Associated Power | Documented Event |
|---|---|---|
| Seventh | Middle Antiquity’s laws of fortune and spiritual-energy revival | Opened by Yuanhao; produces favorable omens for Puppet Dao territory and ominous signs over Alliance leaders 1449. |
| Sixth | Heart-demon tribulations of late High Antiquity | Opened immediately after the seventh coffin’s unfavorable result 1449. |
| Thunderfire Immortal Coffin | Thunderfire calamity | Sealed before Yuanhao attempts further openings 1456. |
| Fourth | Karma Tribulation | Yuanhao attempts to open it despite warnings that its calamity can destroy immortals and their realms; Li Chen holds it shut 1456. |
| Third | Five Decays of the Celestial; time and universal decline | Yuanhao turns toward it after failing to open the fourth, prompting direct Alliance opposition 1456. |
| Tenth | Not specified in the supplied account | Its sudden appearance alarms the Earthly Immortal Continent’s sects and great clans 1437. |
