| Name | Puppet Master |
| Original Name | 偃者 |
| Type | Professional title and standing within the Puppeteer Dao Path 13 156 1244 |
| Dao Path | Puppet Dao, also called the Puppeteer Dao Path; centered on investigating things, extending knowledge, and mastering creation 314 504 |
| Founding Patriarch | Divine Artisan Yan Shi 507 646 |
| Affiliation | The wider Puppet Dao community. The Creation Sect is its recognized orthodox authority, but Puppet Masters also belong to independent factions, clans, and rogue-cultivator communities 1243 |
| Occupation / Role | Research, puppet manufacture, mechanism design, bodily modification, and the creation of power that others can use 156 265 507 |
| Principal Homeland | Eastern Victory Continent, where the Puppeteer Dao Path holds a dominant position 308 518 |
Power Progression
- Technical standing and cultivation are related, but not interchangeable. Reaching Core Formation or Nascent Soul does not automatically confer the corresponding artisan rank 362 504.
- The following ranks describe increasing Puppet Master attainment, rather than a fixed combat-strength ladder 156 290 1236.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | 13 47 | Learns introductory craftsmanship and mechanism operation. Academy apprentices who fail to qualify as craftsmen may instead become Puppeteers. |
| Craftsman | 16 156 | Manufactures mechanism devices and puppet components, and assembles or modifies puppets. Li Chen is recognized as a Puppet Master at this standing. |
| Master Artisan | 29 156 308 | Independently manufactures complete puppets and mechanisms, teaches Craftsmen, and improves schematics. Independently making a three-star puppet demonstrates this proficiency; Li Chen is later identified as a Master Artisan. |
| Grand Artisan | 290 560 711 | Can refine five-star or higher puppets and commands techniques involving the void and materialized primordial energy. Further advancement requires mastering a complete six-star puppet design. Li Chen is confirmed as a Grand Artisan and Core Formation cultivator. |
| Grandmaster Artisan / Puppet Dao Master | 362 875 971 | The technical standing associated with Nascent Soul demands mastery beyond cultivation alone. Li Chen earns recognition as a true Puppet Dao Master after creating Heavenly Pivot’s divine soul and reaching Nascent Soul; the Heavenly Net later verifies his Grandmaster Artisan status. |
| Grandmaster | 995 1154 1236 | A higher standing closely associated with Primordial Spirit-level power and substantial Dao achievements. Sustainable, hereditary improvements to a species’ True Spirit roots are one possible route. Li Chen is later explicitly recognized as a Puppet Master Grandmaster. |
Background and History
The earliest Puppet Masters were seekers of immortality whose spiritual-root aptitude and comprehension were insufficient for easy advancement through established Spell Dao methods. They pursued another route: understanding the principles of heaven and earth through research and craftsmanship. Middling or poor innate aptitude consequently remained common among practitioners 314.
Under Yan Shi’s founding tradition, Puppet Masters sought independence from the Other Continent and rejected exploitation by the Sword, Spell, and Martial Dao paths. Their mechanisms and accumulated military strength helped establish Eastern Victory Continent as the foundation of the Puppet Dao 518 646.
The tradition eventually moved beyond mechanism-puppet techniques into the broader Dao of Creation. This transition occurred hundreds of thousands of years before the later industrial reforms and made the investigation of nature—not simply puppet manufacture—central to its development 1260.
Relations with the Outer Dao remained violent. Rival cultivators regarded Puppet Masters’ appropriation of techniques and access to spells and divine abilities as threats to their interests. Invasions, artisan abductions, retaliatory puppet refinement, and exchanges of captured techniques shaped the development of both sides 663 719 1209.
Philosophy
Investigation and Certification
- Investigating things supplies empirical certification: experimentation establishes what a technique does 504.
- Extending knowledge supplies mental certification: the practitioner understands why it works and derives its underlying principles 504.
- Inherited teachings provide a starting point, but practical testing is necessary for genuine mastery 371.
- Receiving advancement modifications from a stronger Puppet Master can raise cultivation without granting equivalent understanding. Li Chen regards this as an inferior alternative to independent attainment 504.
Creation Above Combat
- Creation is treated as the Great Dao; warfare and slaughter are subordinate applications, even when necessary for survival 371 518.
- The tradition’s value extends beyond advancing its own practitioners: Puppet Masters can repeatedly produce combat forces or help other people genuinely advance 507.
- Giving someone Foundation Establishment-level fighting strength is not the same as raising that person’s cultivation to Foundation Establishment 507.
- The mature Puppet Dao seeks improvement beyond individual transcendence, including sustainable changes inherited across generations 995.
“We Puppet Masters neither cultivate immortality nor seek deification. We seek only truth and the Dao.” 665
Responsibility to Others
- Advanced practitioners are expected to contribute through their specialties: fighting, manufacturing equipment, improving arrays, or coordinating operations 656.
- Li Chen argues that Puppet Masters living among others must take responsibility for those in their care, rather than treating seclusion as an excuse for inaction 703.
- Grandmaster standing carries obligations to the wider community, not merely privileges or personal prestige 1154.
Abilities and Skills
Puppet and Mechanism Manufacture
Puppet Masters build, assemble, refine, and customize mechanical creations, with the complexity of independent manufacture distinguishing their professional ranks 156.
- Art of a Hundred Crafts: encompasses knowledge, principles, and craftsmanship 371.
- Biomimetic design: humanoid, beast-shaped, and hybrid combat puppets offer broad utility and adaptability 190.
- Specialized mechanisms: repeating crossbows, observation devices, chariots, and flying chairs serve narrower practical purposes 190.
- Refinement and customization: practitioners may strengthen materials, improve spirit-mercury circulation, add concealed weapons, or fit protective hides according to their specialties 103.
Mechanism-Performance Method
The Mechanism-Performance Method applies puppet knowledge through practical operation. Puppet Masters can use it themselves without surrendering the crafting skills that distinguish them from dedicated Puppeteers 13 371.
- Stronger practitioners generally control more devices simultaneously and exercise finer control 7.
- Multitasking is essential when directing several puppets in battle 5.
- String-Puppet Theater combines divine sense, will, primordial energy, and magic power for exceptionally precise movement 152.
- Performance techniques developed for expressive puppet shows can also enhance combat control 152.
Automation and Intelligence
Automation reduces the need to direct every movement personally 55.
- Precompiled instructions let ordinary puppets execute standardized actions, including sword movements 55.
- Without specialized assistance, low-tier Puppet Masters struggle to control enough units to exploit inexpensive puppets on a large scale 7.
- High-tier creations may possess artifact spirits or artificial life, allowing independent action under abstract instructions 7.
- Li Chen’s Rune Script, worker-bee systems, and intelligent cores extend this principle into coordinated production and legion warfare 11 103 448 840.
Divine Ability Mechanism Devices
Puppet Masters reproduce spells and divine abilities through mechanisms, restrictions, and miniature formations 103.
- A Spirit Essence Furnace and pump supply and circulate the energy required by the system 103.
- Ordinary mechanical puppets can cast certain spells without a living wielder, artifact spirit, or treasure soul 103.
- Captured Sword Dao knowledge supports artificial sword techniques, but reproducing basic sword qi does not automatically reproduce sword intent 453 727.
- Corpse and flesh puppets can provide genuine magic power at grades where ordinary mechanical puppets cannot; ordinary mechanisms generally require seven-star rank or higher to generate it 721.
Flesh Puppetization
Also called Heavenly Craftsmanship, flesh puppetization replaces mortal tissues with treasures and extraordinary materials in pursuit of a Dao body 73.
- Fill with Mercury as Blood replaces blood with spirit mercury to conduct energy 73.
- Melt Gold, Temper Bone and Gather Essence, Condense Marrow modify skeletal structures 481.
- Five Elements Organ-Shaping, artificial organs, and spiritual-essence seeds alter bodily functions and elemental affinities 340 342 502.
- Successful conversion can improve cultivation potential, energy circulation, physical strength, and access to divine abilities 342 343 499.
- Brain modification is exceptionally dangerous: mistakes may destroy the soul or produce a condition worse than death 499.
Lifebound Body and Replacement Chassis
Puppet Masters regard the original physical body as a lifebound puppet, while other chassis can serve as replaceable tools 101 343.
- The original body remains important for cultivation and future advancement until a suitable Dao body can replace it 343.
- Puppet Chassis allow practitioners to fight without exposing that original body 343 406.
- The Head-Swapping Technique supports bodily replacement and protection; advanced applications can also enable survival through another modified body 223 343.
- Foreign flesh is normally incompatible with the lifebound body. Artificial flesh sharing the recipient’s origins, or certain inherited creations, can avoid this rejection 501.
Artificial Life and Souls
The Creation-Promotion Secret Art grew from generations of work on artificial limbs, eyes, organs, and natural materials. It became a foundational discipline connecting mechanical and biological creation 396.
- Knead Clay, Transform Flesh produces artificial flesh bodies; most practitioners remain at the stage of creating false persons 499.
- Capture Shadows, Refine Souls and Awaken Spirituality create artifact spirits and support advanced soul-making 806 875.
- Perfecting the Secret Art’s nine methods gives rise to Breathe Life into Being, which invests the creator’s vital essence, emotion, and will into an inheritance 995.
- Artificial-human lineages began with Yan Shi’s Dancing Maiden and expanded into five types, A–E. Their traits spread through ordinary heredity, with more than eighty percent of people under the Puppet Dao expressing the inherited True Spirit trait 995.
- Artificial humans are not considered fundamentally different from naturally born people; their distinction lies in how they are created 995.
Combat Methods and Limitations
| Method | Advantage | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Concealed remote control | Keeps the practitioner away from immediate danger while puppets fight 5. | Early practitioners may still be vulnerable if opponents bypass the puppets and attack the controller 148. |
| Prepared mechanisms and reserves | Stores years of production as deployable strength, potentially exceeding the owner’s cultivation realm 406 760. | Effectiveness depends on available equipment, resources, and circumstances 493. |
| Mecha and mechanism armor | Supplies mobility, protection, and abilities the user may not personally possess 5 375. | Equipment must complement or match the user; advanced techniques can cause overload and backlash 374 375. |
| Puppet Conversion | Turns the practitioner’s own body into a stronger combat asset 499 501. | Vital modifications require deep knowledge, compatible materials, and careful control 501 502. |
| Legion warfare | Combines numerous units, resonant attacks, and concealed armaments against stronger enemies 518 845. | Requires command infrastructure, supplies, and sustained replacement production 833 1175. |
- Wealth can allow a Puppet Master to defeat multiple opponents of the same rank, but individual practitioners’ combat capabilities vary enormously 375 493.
- Borrowed puppet power still requires training. A lower-realm controller may operate stronger machinery without mastering all the corresponding abilities personally 481.
- Lightning can penetrate restrictions and disrupt spirit mercury, meridians, and neural networks 123.
- Mental and divine-soul defenses were historically weaker areas of the Puppet Dao 806.
Equipment and Resources
- Puppet storage rings — Matching storage implements deploy and withdraw puppets through the technique called Scatter Beans to Create Soldiers 9.
- Puppet Master’s Robe — Marks professional standing; a Craftsman’s robe bears a Silver-Pattern Mark on its collar 16 88.
- Puppet cores — Provide computation and control. Their manufacture is a major hurdle to independently building complete combat puppets 156.
- Furnaces and pumps — Supply and circulate spirit essence in self-contained mechanisms 103.
- Spirit mercury, demon hides, spiritual seeds, and treasured materials — Support energy transmission, defense, biological modification, and higher-grade construction 73 103 342 560.
- Sealed Boxes — Protect proprietary cores and prevent examination; widely published low-tier designs usually do not need this protection 11 399.
- Spirit peaks, mines, workshops, and factories — Provide the resources and production capacity needed to maintain research and combat forces 288 330 840.
Society and Institutions
Puppet Masters and Puppeteers
| Role | Primary expertise | Traditional standing |
|---|---|---|
| Puppet Master | Craftsmanship, research, manufacture, and practical mechanism operation 13 371. | Recognized as a full practitioner of the creation-centered tradition 13. |
| Puppeteer | Mechanism-Performance Method, especially battlefield control 13. | Described as “half a Puppet Master”; traditionally less respected because the role does not necessarily involve crafting 13. |
- Academy students who fail their craftsman examinations often become rogue Puppeteers 13.
- The roles overlap: one person may cultivate both, and the Creation Sect requires its Puppeteers to understand mechanisms well enough for emergency maintenance 673.
- Later reforms are reported to aim at ending the distinction, making everyone a Puppet Master 1250.
Recognition and Authority
- Craftsman standing grants social privileges, including reserved lecture seating and recognition beyond inherited aristocratic status 16 73.
- Even abducted Craftsmen retain leadership standing among ordinary slave workers 968.
- A faction’s strength reflects not simply its fighters, but the number of Puppet Masters capable of converting resources into usable power 265.
- Grandmasters can enter the Elders’ Council regardless of Creation Sect origin, with proposal, decision, and veto rights. Major faction-wide policies require unanimous Grandmaster agreement 1244.
- Heavenly Will, rather than the Council, is regarded as the Puppet Dao’s supreme authority and shared source of trust 1305.
Education and Knowledge Sharing
- The Complete Book of the Puppet Master Order compiles successive generations’ teachings across many disciplines 69.
- Public lectures commonly cover subjects outside protected secret arts 69.
- Standard puppet designs can be dismantled and studied, providing a route to learning manufacturing methods 103.
- Access to knowledge does not guarantee mastery: practitioners possess different specialties, blind spots, and learning capacities 222.
- Schools emphasize craftsmanship and principles, while rogue communities emphasize practical application and combat 371.
Industry and the Heavenly Net
Traditional Production
- Advancement depends heavily on money and cultivation provisions. Repairs, modifications, experiments, and replacement forces can exhaust even successful practitioners’ resources 103 161 330.
- Enhancement and advancement commissions can fund further research; a completed high-level modification may earn several million Talisman Coins 508.
- Traditional production assigns crucial cores and array circuits to high-rank artisans, secondary components to Master Artisans and Craftsmen, and assembly and debugging to apprentices 1296.
- High-rank handcrafting remains a production bottleneck, especially when processing spiritual-essence materials requires personal magic-power control 1296.
Networked Development
- Li Chen’s wartime networks coordinate remote controllers, artificial intelligence, and replacement puppet forces across multiple cities 833.
- Wisdom Cores allow low-tier units to function as unmanned Bee Soldiers, while more valuable constructs retain human controllers 840.
- After Heavenly Will integrates with the Dao, the Puppet World Heavenly Net connects practitioners through psychic resonance and supports information exchange, transactions, and other services 874.
- The Net enables specialized research commissions, collaborative debate, and faster verification of published results 971 1257.
- Battle-puppet rentals expand through the network, including seven-star units offered by Puppet Dao Masters 1041.
- Later tools, auxiliary brain chips, and bodily modifications weaken the old dependence of technical attainment on personal cultivation, allowing mortal Puppet Masters and modified Celestial Persons to emerge 1136 1260.
Ethics and Reputation
- Puppet Masters are not uniformly benevolent. Human-puppet refinement, corpse exploitation, plague spreading, and other atrocities exist within the tradition 1437 1481.
- Some practitioners use human bodies because cultivated flesh and spiritual roots provide valuable energy systems, or because natural materials are cheaper than artificial substitutes 340 721.
- Li Chen distinguishes useful biological research from abusive methods, investigates surrendered craftsmen’s conduct, and seeks to punish those responsible for turning people into human-puppet materials 479.
- Broad tolerance of unconventional research supports innovation, but also permits morally troubling practices 1437.
- Outsiders frequently condemn Puppet Masters collectively as demonic. These prejudices arise partly from genuine atrocities and persist despite the tradition’s wider achievements 1184.
- Internal inequality is also contested: wealthy clans monopolize resources and talent, while reformers such as Li Chen argue for wider education, technological access, and independence from inherited authority 695 735 1139.
