History

Great Reclamation and the Chen Family War

The Xu Family used the Great Reclamation to pursue advancement beyond its Qi Refining origins. Early expeditions occupied two low-grade spirit ore deposits with almost no casualties, encouraging further deployments. Later exploration proved more costly: a Green-Miasma Alligator Dragon ambush left two mid-Qi Refining and three third-layer cultivators dead or injured 28.

Competition with the Chen Family developed into sustained fighting in the Savage Wastes. Effective leadership and coordinated support from the family gradually gave the Xu forces an advantage. When the Chen Family sought intervention from the Foundation Establishment Qiu Family, the Xu side secured Liu Family assistance to counter it 37 45 47.

The Chen Family’s main force was destroyed, but the Qiu Family seized its former grounds at Purple Maple Bay under the pretext of avenging a bandit massacre. The Xu leadership concluded that the Qiu Family had staged the massacre itself. Although victorious, the Xu Family lost roughly half its anticipated gains 48 71.

Spirit Land and Foundation Establishment

A Xu Pioneer Team discovered second-tier spirit land and secured an initial foothold. Rather than risk holding it independently, the family offered it to the Purple Pole Sect through contacts arranged by Alchemist Mo and Mo Zhaoli. The sect promised access for future Foundation Establishment attempts and later awarded the family an additional Foundation Establishment Pill for its reclamation contributions 60 70.

Xu Xuheng concealed the identity of the intended breakthrough candidate, allowing outsiders to believe that he himself had left to establish his foundation. When the Qiu Family attacked to disrupt the attempt, he appeared publicly and steadied the lineage. The actual candidate, his younger clan cousin Xu Xujun, returned successfully two months later 94.

The new status initially exceeded the family’s material foundations. Its spirit veins, craft inheritances, and reserves still largely belonged to a Qi Refining lineage, making broader investment necessary 99.

Azure Spirit Ward and the Qiu Conflict

Joint development with the Liu Family produced Azure Spirit Ward and a thriving auction business. These revenues, backed by Xu Xujun’s protection, enabled the family to expand its reserves and more than double its number of late-Qi Refining cultivators 70 124 145 168.

The Qiu Family repeatedly tried to impede this growth through provocations, skirmishes, and attacks on outside trade. Chen remnants also conducted an organized revenge campaign against the Xu Family. Xu Qianzhan was recalled to lead counteroperations and suspected that information was leaking from within the lineage 70 71 75 120 125.

As the Qiu Family weakened, the Yun Family intervened to prevent its absorption. The Xu leadership split over whether to destroy its rival immediately. Subsequent gains—including Tantai Feiyue’s return as a Foundation Establishment cultivator—allowed the family to seize abandoned Qiu resource sites 168 178.

Succession Crisis and Defeat of the Qiu Family

A family traitor leaked news that Xu Hanwu had obtained a Foundation Establishment Spirit Treasure. The Qiu ancestor ambushed her, cracking her dantian and threatening the family’s plans for succession. The leadership sealed the lineage for an investigation, halted outward expansion, and adopted a defensive posture 182.

Lin Changheng eventually healed Xu Hanwu’s dantian, allowing her to resume her cultivation path and successfully establish her foundation. The family later avoided gambling its own cultivators in a secret realm, transferring its allotted place to a trusted cooperating rogue cultivator instead 196 203 226.

After Lin revealed that he had killed the gravely wounded Qiu ancestor, the Xu leadership prepared a final war. By the time Xu Xujun next visited Lin, the family had occupied the Qiu Family’s second-tier spirit land and completed its initial relocation there 237 238 246.

Wartime Losses and New Leadership

Purple Pole Sect conscription required the family to send one Foundation Establishment cultivator and ten middle- to late-stage Qi Refining cultivators to the Song–Jin battlefield. Xu Xujun volunteered, believing that his years spent protecting the lineage had already cost him his best opportunity to advance further 294.

Xu Xuheng and chief alchemist Xu Qianyan subsequently died of old age, leaving Xu Hanji with an increasing administrative burden. She brought Tantai Feiyue back into major family affairs and promoted Xu Fugui into the core leadership to manage internal matters 306 337.

Xu Xujun ultimately died on the battlefield. Apart from a few cultivators discharged from logistics duties, the family’s accompanying contingent also perished 441.

Flying Cloud Trade Alliance

Limited resources around Flying Cloud Valley prompted the Xu Family to organize joint development of the Savage Wastes with the Liu and Luo Families. Successful discoveries attracted five more lineages, creating an eight-family alliance that eventually controlled five market wards and profitable development sites 399.

The family’s position weakened after Xu Yongzhen disappeared, Xu Jinxiao died in a demon beast attack, and Xu Bazheng was gravely injured in an ambush. Six alliance lineages then attempted to seize shared control. Luo Tianxiong attacked Xu Hanji during the confrontation, but Tantai Feiyue’s puppet blocked him and Lin Changheng arrived to kill him and punish the other conspirators 399.

Xu Hanji subsequently announced exclusive Xu leadership of the alliance for one hundred years. A punitive clan war forced a rebellious rival to surrender half its resource sites, all its mines and market-ward shares, and the heads of its pro-war faction. The Xu Family installed a previously marginalized collateral branch in control rather than exterminating the lineage 400.

Later Conscription and Relocation

The Purple Pole Sect’s next levy demanded two Foundation Establishment cultivators, fifteen late-Qi Refining cultivators, and thirty middle-stage cultivators. Elder Gu then raised the demand to three Foundation Establishment cultivators and doubled the Qi Refining quota while publicly humiliating the Xu leadership 441 442.

Lin Changheng’s control over Elder Gu through the Spirit-Sealing Life Spring method later helped the family negotiate reduced numbers and safer rear-area assignments, although it could not avoid service entirely 461.

During the Song Region’s wider retreat, the Xu Family relocated safely with the major regional powers. Lin later visited its new settlement and made protective arrangements for Xu Hanji, Tantai Feiyue, and Yan Mingyi 516.

Organization and Recruitment

Leadership and Internal Policy

  • Family head and High Council: The head directed major policy alongside the council. Under Xu Xuheng, distinctions between personal gratitude and rewards for service to the lineage were explicitly maintained 94.
  • Loyalty before advancement: Under Xu Hanji, willingness to shoulder danger determined access to core leadership and the best resources. Two newly advanced Foundation Establishment cultivators lost future leadership prospects after revealing their unwillingness to answer wartime needs 441.
  • Merit-based exchanges: Following the alliance crisis, high-level cultivation methods and elixirs were opened for exchange by members with meritorious contributions 400.
  • War casualty provisions: Soul lamps were maintained in the ancestral hall for deployed cultivators. Fallen members received mourning halls, merit inscriptions, and compensation for their surviving families 306.

Recruitment Paths

Path Support and Benefits Obligations and Limits
Craft apprenticeship / guest elder path Twelve years of standardized support, including spirit stones, spirit rice, and spirit tea; instruction in one family-held cultivation craft 1. Reaching a ranked craft level brought promotion and increased stipend. Failure required dangerous frontier reclamation service as a Xu Family member 1.
Marriage into the lineage Marriage to Xu women, with greater rewards and standing for producing children with spiritual roots 1 18. Recruits with low-grade spiritual roots could choose three wives; those with mixed roots could choose two. The children bore the Xu surname 18.
Full guest elder Larger stipend, expanded access, freedom to choose assignments, and the option to request an external posting 59. Lin Changheng received this status after becoming a mid-grade alchemist; the title remained distinct from blood membership 59 120.

The family deliberately rewarded successful parents to encourage recruitment and population growth. Xu Fugui’s first eight children included four with spiritual roots—two of them middle-grade—earning him exceptional attention, cultivation resources, and further marriage arrangements 28 59.

Craft Specialists

  • Courtesy toward outsiders: Family orders required members to treat alchemists well, recognizing that specialists without blood or marriage ties could otherwise leave 19.
  • Alchemy compensation: Lin Changheng’s chosen share arrangement required seven Standard Pills for every ten portions of ingredients 26.
  • Targeted inheritance purchases: The family obtained a mid-grade Talisman Dao inheritance for Tantai Feiyue, later searching for a second-tier inheritance to support her continued advancement 59 144.
  • Retention through investment: After Lin’s departure, the family supplied Tantai Feiyue with unusually generous resources to strengthen her attachment to the lineage 145.

  • Xu Qianyan later refined a second-tier elixir, beginning the transformation of the family’s pill business into a second-tier operation 178.

Talisman Dao

  • Initially less developed than alchemy, the Talisman Dao became a second core craft under Tantai Feiyue 59 145.
  • Her training produced four low-grade talisman masters in a single cohort, establishing an initial talent pipeline 145.
  • She later became a second-tier talisman master and continued training practitioners even while limiting her involvement in family politics 178 337.
