Seventh layer of Qi Refining / late Qi Refining 98 Recounted retrospectively: unable to overcome the late-stage bottleneck naturally, he takes a clan-bestowed Realm-Breaking Pill. A physician attributes the stubborn bottleneck to severe depletion of his yang essence.
Eighth layer of Qi Refining 98 Reached after years of garrison service alongside Xu Qianzhan. The realm-breaking medicine is later identified as a Meridian-Rushing Pill, whose drawbacks leave him without hope of Foundation Establishment 312.

Background / History

Mortal Origins and Entry into the Xu Family

Xu Fugui was a farmer’s son from a different town than Lin Changheng. Although they shared the Xu surname, he was not originally a descendant of the Blackwater River Xu Family. His eleven wisps of water-aligned spirit resonance barely qualified as a low-grade spiritual root 18.

He and Lin met at a spiritual-root testing assembly. After failing the selection there, both joined the Xu Family as cultivation seedlings. Their friendship began during this period, when they wondered whether people with inferior spiritual roots could ever reach Foundation Establishment and travel through the sky by escape light 18 168.

Marriage and Frontier Service

Fugui’s expanding household helped establish his position within the lineage. At his wedding to Xu Hanling, Xu Xuheng and Xu Hanji briefly appeared to congratulate him, publicly signaling the family’s support. Lin brought two Wood Origin Pills as a wedding gift 29.

Despite being praised for fathering children for the clan, Fugui was abruptly transferred to the Frontier Reclamation Battlefield. The order was carried out so quickly that he could not say goodbye to Lin 34.

During fighting against the Chen Family, Fugui ambushed and killed two fourth-layer Qi Refining cultivators. A sixth-layer elder pursued him, and the Xu reinforcements he expected to find were absent. After enduring only two or three direct blows, he realized he could not win. He swallowed Lin’s Miasma-Dispelling Pill and fled into poisonous miasma, surviving while his pursuer emerged poisoned 38.

While recuperating, Fugui gave Lin nearly thirty bottles of Rockmountain Tortoise essence blood. He had purchased them after the clan killed a tortoise nest during reclamation. He refused reimbursement and promised Lin a share of any contribution reward arising from the elder’s lasting injuries 38 39.

Growing Influence

Fugui became a trusted practical ally to Lin. He recruited his household to circulate exaggerated accounts of Lin’s victory over Pill Master Lü, making the achievement appear accidental and shifting attention away from Lin. He also arranged Lin’s passage with a caravan to the Desolate Ruins Market and supported his request for demonic-beast essence blood at a family banquet 43 49 66 67.

His marriage to Xu Xuying brought the backing of her father, the formidable Xu Qianzhan. Fugui’s battlefield record helped win Qianzhan’s acceptance, and he subsequently served under his father-in-law during an operation against rogue cultivators 66 75.

When Lin’s reputation unexpectedly spread beyond the lineage, Fugui investigated and identified Xu Hanzhou as the likely source of malicious publicity. Hanzhou later appeared on the casualty list of Qianzhan’s operation. Fugui escorted his ashes home and arranged their scattering in the Blackwater River; Lin’s later recollection explicitly credits Fugui with killing Hanzhou for him 75 400.

Years of garrison duty and accumulated military merit raised Fugui into the family’s upper ranks. By then, he had reached the eighth layer of Qi Refining, but the medicine used to overcome his earlier bottleneck had closed his path to Foundation Establishment 98 312.

Bai Fengxian’s Death and the Qiu Feud

After Bai Fengxian died during frontier reclamation, Fugui delayed the burial so that he and Lin could fulfill their friend’s wish to have them choose his resting place. He arranged to monitor the family’s compensation and joined Lin in planning support and future trades for Bai’s children 119.

The attack showed signs of both demonic-beast and cultivator involvement. The Qiu Family’s subsequent seizure of the resource site made them the leading suspects. Fugui supported retaliation within the Xu Family’s High Council, whereas Lin preferred to wait for a safer opportunity 119 120.

Fugui continued caring for Bai’s descendants, eventually securing an apprenticeship in the Spirit Talisman Hall for one of Bai’s grandsons. Once Lin killed the Qiu patriarch, Fugui obtained an important command position in the coming assault, hoping to earn a Heart-Guarding, Meridian-Stabilizing Pill for his eighth daughter’s breakthrough 238.

Later Years and Family Legacy

As his own prospects narrowed, Fugui increasingly invested in his descendants. He asked Lin to guide his seventh son toward pill-making and later sought protection through Mo Zhaoli for his high-grade-spiritual-root grandson in the Purple Pole Sect 106 178 186.

His hopes for his fifth son ended tragically. The young man had a middle-grade spiritual root and some chance of Foundation Establishment, but lacked resources and ventured out to seek opportunities. After a disastrous injury, he died by suicide. Fugui’s grief interrupted his customary annual correspondence with Lin 226.

Xu Hanji eventually promoted Fugui into the family’s core leadership to manage internal affairs. Her decision reflected his proven competence, the influence of his accomplished descendants, and his close friendship with Lin. A married-in son-in-law entering an immortal lineage’s core leadership was described as exceptionally rare 337.

When Lin returned after more than forty years, Fugui was white-haired, deeply wrinkled, and near the end of his life. After learning that Lin had rescued his daughter and grandson, he expressed relief that they had returned safely rather than demanding more from them. Lin spent part of his month-long stay reminiscing with him 337.

Death and Burial

Fugui died without reaching Foundation Establishment. When Lin next learned of his death, more than twenty years had already passed 399.

Following his final wishes, Xu Bazheng buried his ashes in the hills beside Blackwater River, among the old companions who had joined the Xu Family with him. She planted a pine on his grave. Lin later visited, offered wine, and renewed his promise to see the wider world on behalf of friends who had not lived to do so 400.

Appearance

Fugui’s appearance changes markedly with prosperity, military service, and age.

  • Early adulthood: Dark skin, thick brows, large eyes, a slightly plump figure, and a broad grin 18.
  • Wedding period: A broader waist and belly, accompanied by the cheerful confidence of his improved circumstances 29.
  • After prolonged garrison duty: His belly disappears, his skin darkens again, and his bearing becomes steady and shrewd 98.
  • At fifty-eight: Deeply tanned and powerfully built, with no remaining plumpness or obvious signs of old age 168.
  • Later prosperity: Regains a round face and prominent belly, resembling a wealthy mortal gentleman 238.
  • Final reunion: Entirely white hair, a heavily wrinkled face, and trembling hands 337.

Personality

Fugui is warm, sociable, and loyal to old friends. He welcomes Lin enthusiastically, refuses payment for a lifesaving favor, and repeatedly offers assistance without treating their friendship as a transaction. His concern extends to Bai Fengxian’s bereaved household, whose welfare he continues to oversee long after the funeral 29 39 67 119 238.

His cheerful manner does not exclude ruthlessness. Battlefield experience and powerful family connections give him methods unavailable to his younger self. His handling of Xu Hanzhou shows that he is willing to act decisively against someone he believes has endangered Lin 75 400.

He enjoys marriage and fatherhood, but his attachment to his household is genuine. The aging and deaths of his mortal wives cause him pain, while his children’s prospects motivate further military service. In old age, he becomes more accepting of his limits and places greater value on his descendants’ safety 59 238 337.
