Background / History
Early Life and Sect Training
Mo Zhaoli is Master Mo’s granddaughter and his only remaining family member. Before leaving for the Purple Pole Sect, she knew Lin Changheng during his difficult years at her grandfather’s pill-refining shop. She later credits Lin’s perseverance with helping her endure her own setbacks in the sect 15 103.
Her aptitude is close to high-grade but remains middle-grade. Within the Purple Pole Sect, this places her near the bottom of its talent pool. Her early letters describe intense pressure and demanding cultivation requirements rather than an effortless rise through the ranks 15 583 608.
Homecoming and Preparation for Foundation Establishment
After twenty years away, Zhaoli returns to visit her grandfather. The Xu Family replaces its planned grand reception with a private gathering, giving the reunion a more personal setting 100 102 103.
Although she has become an inner disciple and a Foundation Establishment cultivator’s personal disciple, she still lacks the spirit stones and sect merit needed for a Foundation Establishment Pill. She accepts frontier-reclamation missions to hunt demonic beasts and accumulate those resources 100 103.
Lin initially lends her 300 low-grade spirit stones. Rather than accept help without reciprocating, she offers him more than thirty bottles of Mountain-Moving Ape blood; they deduct its value from the loan. Her later breakthrough letter credits him with a loan of one thousand spirit stones 103 104 130.
The Xu Family also offers her resources under a deliberately loose mutual-support agreement. In return, it hopes she will look after the family in the future, without imposing specific obligations 105.
Missions and Shared Expeditions
After establishing her foundation, Zhaoli briefly enjoys a less demanding cultivation life. Her ambition to reach Core Formation leads her back to intensive assignments, with Master Mo’s support 152.
Her missions repeatedly bring her into danger. An operation against supposedly ordinary rogue cultivators proves to target a hidden Demon Sect, whose ambush lightly injures her and wounds other sect members 178 179.
She later invites Lin to help obtain a water-and-wind beast core for a commission paying in Ice Pool Jade Spring, a resource useful against the Foundation Establishment middle-stage bottleneck. Their cooperation also gives Lin access to valuable beast materials 214 220.
On another expedition, the two clear an assigned area of quasi-third-tier spirit land. Zhaoli shares the opportunity’s profits with Lin and coordinates her wood magic with his attacks. The mission also exposes her longstanding feud with Ye Qingwu over a cultivation opportunity 275 276 277.
Betrayal and Disappearance
During the Song–Jin war, Zhaoli joins the overt team of a secret supply mission organized by the Purple Pole Sect and Mystic Ice Valley. Hehuan Sect cultivators ambush the team with precise knowledge of its movements, inflicting devastating casualties. The accompanying covert team receives warning and completes its task with much lighter losses 348.
Lin’s investigation reveals that a Purple Pole Sect steward leaked the overt team’s route, personnel, and contingency plans. Zhaoli escapes the encirclement through a costly technique that leaves her grievously injured, then flees pursuing cultivators through an ancient teleportation formation in the Miasma-Shadow Ancient Forest 355.
The ruined teleportation route leaves her destination unknown. Lin repairs and conceals the accessible end in the hope that it might eventually offer her a way home. Whether the sect leadership authorized the betrayal remains unresolved 355.
Before the mission, Zhaoli entrusted Ye Qingwu with a chest for Lin in case she did not return. It contains hundreds of bottles of carefully selected beast blood and explanatory notes, strengthening Lin’s determination to find her 348 349.
Life in the Azure Abyss Sea
Zhaoli survives in the Azure Abyss Sea and becomes a steward of the Sea-Ruins Merchant Guild’s Deep Abyss Altar. She continues advancing through assignments and cultivation rather than relying on Lin’s distant protection 553 583.
Long before their reunion, an enhanced Soul Lamp confirms that she is alive and healthy, with its directional link pointing far to the east. Lin obtains both the lamp and its supporting jade ring from the Purple Pole Sect 459 460.
After more than a century apart, the lamp dims and prompts Lin to search for her. He finds her injured and exhausted, defending a group behind a formation on an island in the White Bone Abyss. Despite recognizing him and being overwhelmed by their reunion, her first instinct is to shield him from the besieging demon cultivators and urge him to flee 553.
Following their escape, Lin gives her cultivation pills and a Dust-Forgetting Pill to conceal what occurred in the secret realm from the guild. Their farewell at Long Deer Peak includes a kiss, and Zhaoli promises to seek a fourth-tier earth-attribute body-tempering method for him 558.
Pursuit of Nascent Soul
As a high-ranking guild member, Zhaoli uses her connections to obtain rare resources for Lin while continuing her own cultivation. She helps secure his body-tempering method, soul-restoring liquid, and ingredients for the Demon-Shedding Transformation Pill 583 585 595.
Her battlefield achievements attract the attention of fourth-tier Demon Kings. True Lord Buhai intervenes when two attack her, then later supports her admission to the guild’s core training program 613 615.
Zhaoli chooses to remain in the Azure Abyss Sea when Lin prepares to return to their homeland. She accepts his Nascent Soul breakthrough resources and protective preservation of a strand of her soul and true spirit, while committing to pursue her own Dao and eventually stand beside him as a Dao companion 615.
The guild subsequently awards her a Nascent Soul Transformation Pill and an additional, nonduplicating formation spirit item. Her merits, Buhai’s backing, and the leadership’s knowledge of her relationship with Lin all contribute to the decision. No successful Nascent Soul breakthrough is documented in the supplied chapters 623.
Appearance
- Build and features: Slender and graceful, with dark hair, willow-leaf brows, almond-shaped eyes, and dimples when she smiles 15 134 152.
- Distinguishing mark: A cinnabar mark between her brows 214 553.
- Clothing: Frequently wears moon-white gowns or white flowing-cloud dresses 134 214 553.
- Bearing: After Foundation Establishment, her movements become calm and unhurried; spiritual mist and restrained cultivation pressure accompany her appearance 134.
Personality
Zhaoli is disciplined and ambitious, but does not treat aptitude or connections as substitutes for effort. She repeatedly returns to dangerous assignments to finance advancement. Her desire for independence is part of her Dao heart: she wants to travel alongside Lin as a genuine companion, not become a dependent receiving everything from him 152 583 608.
Her gratitude is practical and reciprocal. She preserves old relationships despite gaining status, collects materials Lin needs, and arranges exchanges that allow both of them to benefit. With him, her mature composure sometimes gives way to teasing and playful familiarity 104 134 152.
Her gentle manner does not prevent decisive action. She defends Lin against dismissive sect members, advocates harsh measures against bandit cultivators, and remains focused while killing concealed targets. Under pressure, she can reorganize her thoughts and resume fighting despite exhaustion, injury, or emotional distress 216 271 276 553.
