Background / History

Liyun Tower and the Mount Wukang Mission

At Liyun Tower in Skyward City, Xiang Lan’er appears to be a courtesan sacrificing her savings for the disgraced Bian Weikang. Privately, she reveals that her relationship with the sect master’s son is a route into Mount Wukang. Bringing the influential talisman-making sect under her branch’s control would strengthen its position in the struggle for leadership at the Demon Altar 30.

She and Feng Chi had secretly engineered Bian’s troubles. After his father disowns him, they adopt a new performance: Xiang becomes the devoted lover mistreated by the tower’s madam. Feng whips her to provide convincing injuries, while Xiang insists that Bian must suffer further before he will properly value her 31.

Shi Chun supplies the missing fifty thousand sandalwood gold for her release. He later appears to destroy her indenture, but the torn document is a forgery made by Wu Jinliang. The deed he reads states that she sold herself for thirty years to fund her father’s treatment; Feng separately confirms that its registration with the Heavenly Court used Xiang’s genuine identifying marks 34 35 42.

Capture and Conditional Cooperation

Considering Shi Chun and Wu Jinliang dangerous unknown factors, Xiang orders Feng to arrange their elimination after the group leaves Skyward City. Instead, Cen Futong’s men seize and disable her, and Shi takes her hostage. She subsequently realizes that she never verified the indenture before its supposed destruction 42 44 47.

Feng’s attempt to rescue her exposes their Demonic Path affiliation and leads to Shi’s discovery that his own cultivation art has demonic properties. Xiang is wounded during the confrontation and remains largely unable to act 47 48.

She eventually promises to protect Shi and bring him into Mount Wukang, conditional on his stated purpose being truthful and on their not interfering with each other inside. Shi frees her only after sending Wu away with a safeguard against betrayal. Xiang recognizes the leverage but keeps her promise, conceals the confrontation from Bian, and continues toward the mountain 51.

At Linkang, she reconnects with Feng and their local contacts. When a subordinate warns that admitting Shi could jeopardize her mission, Xiang insists that their agreement must be honored and orders him to find a solution 52 53.

Skyfall Meteor Assembly

Her superiors expand her assignment to include investigating and recruiting Shi and Wu, whose apparent connections to Wangbo Tower may be more valuable than Mount Wukang itself. The Skyfall Meteor Assembly is intended both to improve Xiang’s standing at the sect and to give her extended access to the two men 67 70.

She cooperates with Sun Shigang’s staged harassment, designed to create a pretext for attacking them and killing Wu. Sun also serves as her contact hub for twelve other teams. His disappearance, alongside Shi and Wu’s loss of contact, leaves her increasingly uneasy 78 84 86.

Recognizing the danger posed by Bai Shuchuan’s alliance, Xiang urges Bian Weiying to withdraw. Weiying stays to protect Mount Wukang from political blame but gives Xiang two talismans and helps her leave alone. Three ill-intentioned men follow Xiang and never return; their fate is not explained 97.

After finding Shi and Wu again, she probes them about Sun through claims concerning a device that could make the Moon Sea safer and aid the crystal search. She also discovers Shi’s participant tag identifying him as “Wang Sheng” of Wandering Rosy Clouds Mountain 129 130 132 133.

Xiang joins their operation to investigate Shi’s supposed backing. As part of their cover, she reluctantly portrays a woman assaulted by Bai Shuchuan—a fabricated accusation, not an account of an actual assault by him. She later helps capture Suyuan Sect opponents and receives insect core crystals that Shi secretly removes from his army’s hauls 134 141 165.

Recruitment, Romance, and Exposure

Following the assembly, Shi repeatedly declares his love for Xiang. She rejects his explanations by recalling his threats, deception, and suspected relationship with Bian Weiying. His private conversations with Wu establish that the confession is initially a strategy to prevent Mount Wukang from expelling him 204 205.

Her superiors nevertheless order her to exploit his apparent affection and draw him into their branch. Xiang becomes uncertain about her own feelings, but maintains that she cannot betray her masters: any husband must belong to her branch of the Demonic Path 206 207.

When Mount Wukang discovers the infiltration and prepares a purge, Feng orders Xiang to arrange withdrawal and bring Shi with her. Xiang warns him and coordinates departures while concealing the need to notify their hidden operative 207 208.

The collapse of the operation exposes the deception to Bian Weikang. Xiang faces him without her former affectionate manner. Later, remembering how close she came to marrying him and bearing his child, she feels sickened by the role she had nearly fulfilled 222 227.

Royal Capital and the Divine Fire Pact

After leaving Mount Wukang, Xiang lives in a prize residence before reluctantly accepting Shi’s invitation to move into his mansion. Feng adopts the identity of her hired attendant. Xiang objects to being instructed to reuse the seduction tactics that Shi had already watched her employ against Bian 228 233.

She receives cultivation resources from her superiors and enters seclusion. When the Divine Fire Pact approaches, she supports Shi’s plan to establish a separate artifact-refining sect and reports its available entry places to the leadership 234 239.

During Shi’s absence in the Divine Fire Domain, Xiang breaks through to Advanced Martial grand completion. She later waits anxiously for his return and fears the consequences of Bright Mountain Sect’s disqualification, until the Green-Robed Man assures her that their superiors intend to keep Shi alive for his service and secret knowledge 328 411 424.

After the expedition, she challenges Shi’s demand for further payment for the Desolate-Breaking Remnant Blade, citing their original agreement of five hundred million and a residence. During a subsequent private encounter, he captures her with the Immortal-Strangling Sash, seals her acupoints, forcibly strips her, and sexually touches her. She attempts to confront him afterward, but Feng restrains her 473 664.

Separation and Reassignment

Shi eventually grows colder and disappears. The Sacred Venerable expresses dissatisfaction with Xiang and pressures her to surrender her body if necessary to repair the relationship. Xiang and Feng later learn that their leadership is pursuing Shi despite his past service, and suspect his handwriting in a letter delivered to Shen Moming 582 583.

During Shi’s twenty-year imprisonment, the Demonic Path transfers Xiang to the Northern Ju Royal Capital to court a high-status man, later identified as Liang Mian. Feng describes the assignment as another staged relationship like the one with Bian Weikang 661 664 668.

When Xiang visits old acquaintances and tries to persuade Feng to leave with her, Shi immobilizes and sexually assaults her. Feng abandons her to the encounter and guards the door. Xiang emerges crying and enraged, then leaves in distress. She later tells Liang that Feng cannot accompany her because Shi has committed Feng to the Great Amnesty War 668 669.

Appearance

Xiang is repeatedly described as exceptionally beautiful; after removing her cosmetics, she appears even more radiant 39 75 101.

  • Graceful, trained bearing: Clear diction, a pleasant voice, composed bows, and polished hospitality support her devoted-lover persona 39.
  • Pearl flower ornament: Wears a hair ornament that doubles as a covert meeting signal 52.
  • Concealing cloak: Covers herself from head to toe while traveling alone during the assembly 124.
  • Visible staged injuries: Carries whip marks on her face and body after Feng’s beating at Liyun Tower 31 34.

Personality

Xiang is calculating and politically ambitious. She willingly stages suffering, cultivates Bian’s dependence, and orders the removal of outsiders who might disrupt her mission. Her gentle public manner can abruptly give way to cold, commanding authority 30 31 42 44.

Her pragmatism does not make every promise expendable. She honors her agreement with Shi despite its risks and sharply rebukes Feng for presuming to decide on the Saintess’s behalf 53 214.

She is particularly skeptical of Shi’s romantic performances because she has witnessed his methods firsthand. Even when emotionally unsettled, she questions whether a man so controlled would genuinely allow beauty to govern his decisions. Her uncertainty about him remains constrained by loyalty to her masters and pressure from her superiors 207 233 582.
