Background / History
Emerald Cloud Peak and the “Happy and Carefree” Scam
Lü Yanyan spends years navigating the Dao Sect’s Outer Sect, where other disciples attempt to exploit her Contribution Points or pursue her body. She regards her talent as average and carefully preserves her personal boundaries while seeking someone dependable enough to help her survive 41 106.
Her early dealings with Chen Yu involve a supposed “Happy and Carefree” service. He supplies the clue “The Mass Burial Grounds, late at night” in exchange for membership, and she submits it to Elder Song, earning ten Contribution Points. She later admits that the service was fabricated to swindle new disciples; Chen Yu reveals that he recognized the deception from the beginning 21 22 106.
Initially attracted by Chen Yu’s points and future prospects, she offers information about the Outer Sect Genius Ranking and claims she can introduce him to fifth-ranked Han Feng. When direct flirtation fails, she adopts a slower approach based on practical assistance 27 36 37 41.
She arranges Chen Yu’s Heavenly Union Association assessment and lends him an association token to discourage harassment. Her own later assessment attempt fails: she answers fifteen of twenty questions correctly, two short of passing. During the debt crisis, she warns him that desperate borrowers may target his savings and begins bringing meals to his residence 37 41 45 52.
Netherdark Sea Expedition and Confession
Selected for the dangerous Netherdark Sea expedition, Lü researches the destination through her contacts and learns of the Demon Sect and Nether Ruins Sect. As a fourth-layer cultivator, she fears she will not return, but Chen Yu’s reassurance comforts her. She also accepts Ren Shaohua’s offer of protection, turning his attraction toward her into a practical advantage 84 85.
During a crisis over an Azure Flower, she divides it between Wu Wenjie and Ren rather than entrusting the entire herb to either man. Her decision reflects both uncertainty about Ren’s condition and her mistaken belief that Chen Yu is too weak to escape with it 91.
After surviving, she questions whether the sect deliberately selected expendable disciples—those burdened by debt, poor talent, or injuries. Fearing another such mission, she confesses her deception and asks Chen Yu for a sincere intimate relationship. She accepts his disclosure that he has a false spirit embryo, choosing closeness without demanding guarantees about their future 106 107.
Financial Trust and Elder Sun’s Inspections
Under new sparring rules, Lü entrusts Chen Yu with 43 Contribution Points while retaining 220 for repayment and expenses. Their arrangement protects her savings and gives him enough points to repay his loan. During the subsequent challenges against him, her concern is for his safety rather than the money he holds 115 121.
Chen Yu begins supplying her with spirit essence and a cultivation manual. After Ding Yiliu’s death, he also transfers 199 legitimate points so she can purchase fasting pills and devote more time to cultivation 132 135.
When Elder Sun introduces deadly monthly cultivation inspections, Lü transfers all her remaining 93 points to Chen Yu before answering a summons, preparing for the possibility that she will not return. She survives the inspection but comes back frightened, carrying Sun’s summons for Chen Yu 136.
Before Elder Li’s Contribution Point audit, Chen Yu warns her not to spend the points he previously gave her and reduces her token balance to 53. This precaution protects her from scrutiny during an audit that kills dozens of disciples. He also gives her another piece of spirit essence to support further advancement 149.
Entry into the Inner Sect
Over the next two years, spirit essence helps Lü approach the seventh layer of Qi Refining. She delays her breakthrough because she hopes to advance alongside Chen Yu, and the pair leave the Outer Sect together 151 154 155.
The Inner Sect’s free lodging and meals initially seem like paradise to her. Chen Yu explains that apparently welcoming elders may instead covet recruits’ Spirit Embryo Essence. She quickly regains her composure and questions how he verified the elders’ claims, demonstrating that her trust does not prevent her from thinking critically 158.
Before Elder Yun’s assessment, she urges Chen Yu not to sacrifice a chance at personal discipleship for her sake. He instead secures conditional acceptance for both of them: Elder Yun allows her to join Nine-Bend Peak if Chen Yu improves his poison formula within three months. Her new token bears her name and the peak’s name 160 164.
Chen Yu fulfills the condition with an advanced Fire-Poison Powder formula, securing her place. She builds a home near his waterfall residence and begins studying the Basics of the Poison Path with his guidance 167 171.
Nine-Bend Peak and the Three-Sect Grand Competition
Life on Nine-Bend Peak gives Lü a period of peace after the Outer Sect’s constant danger. She continues sharing meals with Chen Yu and seeking his help with poison studies. When she believes Shen Fei has poisoned him, she rushes in with her sword drawn; afterward, Chen Yu explains that the incident was staged and warns her against confronting danger without a plan 169 200 206 209.
Selected for the Three-Sect Grand Competition, she divides her preparation between cultivation and making poisons. Chen Yu provides spirit essence and emergency poisons effective against Foundation Establishment cultivators. Although she worries about stronger opponents, the other peaks’ fear of Nine-Bend Peak’s poison reputation helps her recognize the value of her training 211 216 217.
Appearance
Lü Yanyan has a pretty, innocent-looking face and a slender yet voluptuous figure. Her appearance is an important part of her early social maneuvering, though she does not casually concede intimacy to those attracted to her 21 41 122.
- Beautiful, expressive eyes: her reactions shift from teasing confidence to visible surprise when Chen Yu resists her advances 36.
- Contrasting mannerisms: she can rapidly alternate between seductive, fresh and innocent, and mature personas 36.
- Inner Sect robes: worn when she departs as a Nine-Bend Peak competition representative 217.
Personality
Lü is pragmatic, ambitious, and socially calculating in her early appearances. She treats beauty and connections as resources, evaluates Chen Yu as an investment, and knows when persistent flirtation would damage rather than improve her prospects 36 41.
Her growing affection is expressed through small, attentive acts: remembering Chen Yu’s preference for chilies, saving meals when he misses dining hours, and avoiding visits long enough to become unwelcome. She later trusts him with money, cultivation decisions, and secrets without insisting that he explain every mystery surrounding him 52 53 61 138 149.
She repeatedly underrates her own talent and worries that accepting valuable resources wastes them. Nevertheless, she recovers quickly from discouragement, studies diligently, and eventually masters the basic poison formulas available to her. Her protectiveness can also become impulsive, as shown by her armed response to Chen Yu’s apparent poisoning 149 158 206 211.
Abilities & Skills
Poison Path

- Uses spirit essence supplied by Chen Yu and purchases additional essence with breakthrough rewards 151 211 216.

Notable Quotes
“The path of immortal cultivation goes against heaven. It has always required us to keep fighting heaven, earth, and other people. There are no benefits handed out for nothing in this world.” 158
“Junior Brother, if you get a chance to become Elder Yun's personal disciple during the assessment, don't worry about me.” 160
Trivia
- Lü and Chen Yu continue using “Senior Sister” and “Junior Brother” in private even after their positions at Nine-Bend Peak change 171.
- She ranks twelfth on Nine-Bend Peak when chosen for the Three-Sect Grand Competition; its delegation consists of the top three and bottom two disciples 217.
- The feeling of being watched that prompts her to fence both residences is probably caused by Chen Yu’s initially clumsy divine-sense observation, not an identified intruder 202.
