Organization and Hierarchy
Leadership
| Position | Authority and responsibilities |
|---|---|
| Sect Master | Chu directs sect affairs, commands the elders, and orders major investigations and expeditions 101 199. |
| Outer Sect peak masters | Five peak masters oversee the five Outer Sect peaks. During their prolonged absence, subordinate elders manage their peaks’ affairs 101 199. |
| Inner Sect elders | Maintain individual peaks, recruit disciples, and participate in ranked council meetings. Thirteen attend Chu’s meeting at Morning Cloud Hall 101 154 173. |
| Outer Sect elders | Rank below Inner Sect elders and above Inner Sect disciples. They ordinarily cannot attend the sect’s senior meetings 101. |
| Elder representatives | Disciples can attend meetings on their mentors’ behalf. Chen Yu represents Elder Yun, while Elder Wu sends a female disciple to deliver binding directives 172 173. |
Recruitment and Promotion
The sect recruits through three distinct routes. Poor candidates entering as registered disciples face a lethal assessment, while screened recruits and descendants of dignitaries can enter the Outer Sect directly 1 59.
| Category / Rank | Admission and conditions |
|---|---|
| Registered disciples | Also called nominal or probationary disciples. The Xia Kingdom sends talented youths every three years; recruits must reach the third layer of Qi Refining within that period 1 8. |
| Registered-to-Outer promotion | Reaching the third layer only qualifies a disciple to challenge an existing Outer Sect disciple. The defeated Outer disciple is refined into Spirit Essence to replace the expected harvest 6 9 11. |
| Ordinary Outer Sect recruits | Screened in mortal countries and admitted through internal referrals; generally assigned by spirit-embryo attribute 59. |
| Noble-status Outer Sect recruits | Mostly descendants of officials and dignitaries; assigned exclusively to Purple Bamboo Peak 59. |
| Inner Sect disciples | Seventh-layer Qi Refining disciples can register for promotion, then select an Inner Sect elder and complete any required assessment 56 154 155 159. |
- Registered-to-Outer advancement is exceptionally rare: the Scripture Pavilion guardian identifies Chen Yu as only the second disciple to achieve it in nearly a century; the guardian himself was the first 16.
- Aptitude affects social standing: Xu Yunnian, Wang He, and Elder Sun lose interest in Chen Yu after learning that he has a False Spirit Embryo 13 16.
- Mentor admission varies by peak: Elder Yun’s candidates must pass at least seven of ten poison trials; passing all ten grants a chance at his personal instruction 159.
Internal Bodies
- Discipline Hall — Emerald Cloud Peak disciples serve as Swordbearers, catching conduct violations to meet monthly quotas and earn points 18.
- Heavenly Union Association — The Outer Sect’s sole recognized disciple organization. Its Emerald Cloud branch assesses newcomers, while its Purple Bamboo headquarters provides missions and records access 46.
- Inner Sect Affairs Office — Records incoming disciples and handles mentor preferences and assessment authorizations 154 160.
- Scripture Repositories — Each Outer Sect peak has its own repository; the Inner Sect shares a larger repository on Morning Cloud Peak 167.
Territory and Facilities
The five Outer Sect peaks occupy only one-fifth of the Dao Sect’s grounds. A mountain-protecting formation controls access; registered and Outer Sect disciples require an elder’s authorization to leave 63 155.
Outer Sect Peaks
| Peak | Attribute | Documented role or distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Emerald Cloud Peak | Metal | Associated with the Discipline Hall, strict conduct enforcement, and Elder Sun’s lending operation. Also accepts some disciples of other attributes 18 134. |
| Purple Bamboo Peak | Wood | Houses noble-status recruits and abundant medicinal gardens. Its disciples are comparatively wealthy and comfortable; it formerly hosted the Heavenly Union Association headquarters 46 59 69 209. |
| Jade Yao Peak | Water | Elder Zheng issues debt-enforcement missions requiring defaulting disciples to be brought here 18 46. |
| Heavenly Flame Peak | Fire | Disciples can be assigned to burn beneath furnaces; one piece of Spirit Essence is valued at three years of this work 18 23. |
| Ten Thousand Mountains Peak | Earth | Elder Du administers the peak during its peak master’s absence, before disappearing 18 101 151. |
Other Important Locations
| Location | Function |
|---|---|
| Little Green Peak | Residential area for registered disciples 8. |
| Little Bamboo Peak | Registered disciples’ communal area, with free restaurants, teahouses, gambling houses, chess clubs, and cultivation lectures 4. |
| Mass Burial Grounds | Located behind Little Bamboo Peak; receives remains from Spirit Essence refinement and is the site of the Immortal Ruins’ appearance 8 13 30. |
| Jadewood Peak | Site of the registered disciples’ combat assessment 11 13. |
| Morning Cloud Peak | Center of sect authority, containing Morning Cloud Hall and the Inner Sect Scripture Repository 101 167. |
| Heavenly Chasm Peak | Promotion destination near the vast, initially bridgeless rift separating the Outer and Inner Sects 154 155. |
| Nine-Bend Peak | Elder Yun’s Poison Path peak; named for its steep main path’s nine turns 159. |
| Radiant Blossom Peak | Hosts the Inner Sect meeting attended by Chen Yu as Elder Yun’s representative 172. |
| Greenstone Town | Settlement outside the sect’s mountains where incoming disciples are collected 63. |
Resources and Economy
Spirit Essence
Spirit Essence is both a cultivation resource and the Dao Sect’s main currency. It is produced by refining people and can be used in cultivation, alchemy, artifact crafting, and medicinal-herb growth 1.
- Scheduled harvesting: registered disciples who fail the three-year cultivation requirement are refined by elders 1 9.
- Preserved harvest totals: successful promotion requires an existing Outer disciple to die in the candidate’s place 6.
- Attribute differences: Spirit Essence retains differences associated with its source’s spirit-embryo attribute 69.
- Spirit Embryo Essence: Elder Sun seeks this rarer resource to improve his aptitude and overcome a Foundation Establishment bottleneck. Its acquisition is tied to the sect’s exploitation of disciples 140.
- Foundation Establishment extraction: the practice of extracting spirit embryos from Foundation Establishment disciples is explicitly halted by Elder Wu’s later directive 173.
Points, Assignments, and Debt
| System | Documented terms |
|---|---|
| Discipline assignments | Emerald Cloud Swordbearers must catch at least three violations monthly; each additional catch earns one point 18. |
| Spirit Essence exchange | One hundred points can be exchanged for one piece of Spirit Essence 18. |
| Low-level manuals | Cultivation methods and martial techniques generally cost one piece of Spirit Essence each 18. |
| Records access | Entry to the Heavenly Union Association’s reference room costs one contribution point 46. |
| Outer Sect Genius Ranking | Provides monthly point rewards and exemption from routine assignments; Chen Yu identifies a 30-point monthly reward as useful for loan repayment 36. |
| Borrowing restriction | Sect rules allow only one outstanding loan, preventing rolling borrowing between multiple lenders 26. |
Outer Sect disciples must pay for clothing, food, lodging, and transportation while completing monthly assignments. Registered disciples receive these necessities free, despite facing refinement at the end of their probation 27.
Elder Sun’s lending operation becomes increasingly predatory. Its harsh interest practices contribute to the deaths of Liu Jun and other debtors, while the Heavenly Union Association supplies manpower to capture defaulters 46 134. After Sun’s disappearance, Elder Li preserves the outstanding debts but waives one year’s interest 149.
Scripture Collections
- Outer Sect access: a newly admitted disciple may choose one cultivation art free 16.
- Inner Sect access: newly promoted disciples receive an opportunity to choose a technique from the repository’s first or second floor; higher floors remain restricted 167.
- Collection quality: the Inner Sect repository is roughly four or five times larger than an Outer repository, with jade shelves and extensive Profound-grade material on its second floor 167 168.
- Reader annotations: manuals contain cultivation comments. Chen Yu finds misleading praise and spam in the Outer collection, but more useful exchanges of cultivation insights in the Inner collection 16 168.
- True Essence Profound Canon: an available five-element cultivation path that requires additional attribute-specific arts after its fourth-layer limit, making continued advancement expensive 16.
Discipline and Treatment of Disciples
Registered Disciples
Registered disciples are restricted to Little Bamboo Peak and Little Green Peak. The sect randomly pairs male and female recruits as Dao companions and forbids fighting between them under penalty of refinement 1 2 8.
Their comfortable surroundings conceal their role as a Spirit Essence harvest. Soul-Delighting Incense and the elders’ praise help persuade failed candidates to celebrate refinement as an honorable contribution to the sect 6 9.
- Limited instruction: registered disciples learn the Qi Guiding Art but receive no martial techniques from the sect, putting them at a severe disadvantage in promotion duels 6 11.
- Unequal equipment: Yun Miaozhen receives a wooden sword while her opponent retains a sharp, spiritual-power-enhanced weapon 11.
- Lethal dissent: Elder Wu immediately refines a candidate who protests the assessment’s unfairness 11.
- Interference: Chen Yu later identifies Elder Song’s manipulation of Yun’s match as protection for the well-connected Xu Yunnian 46.
Outer Sect
The Code of Conduct Manual contains 981 violations, extending from appearance and food waste to shoelace arrangement. Its final clause reserves interpretation of the rules to the Dao Sect 17 18.
- Disciples watch newcomers for infractions and use enforcement to earn resources or reduce their own assignment burdens 18 56.
- Entering another disciple’s residence without invitation and fighting are prohibited 37.
- Elder Li’s initial audit kills dozens of disciples with suspicious point records or stagnant cultivation 149.
- Later reforms tighten daily obligations while rewarding cultivation advancement with contribution points 151.
Inner Sect
Inner Sect life is less uniform: disciples build homes on their mentors’ peaks, travel along dirt paths, and wear varied clothing outside formal occasions 160 167.
Greater freedom does not guarantee safety. Ding Yiliu warns that Inner Sect membership offers only limited protection, while Elder Li advises newcomers to remain inconspicuous and research their mentors carefully 132 155.
- Uneven authority: Chen Yu and Lü Yanyan witness one elder threatening an eighth-layer Qi Refining disciple with death, then a Foundation Establishment disciple openly reprimanding another elder. The reason for this reversal remains unclear 159 160.
- Suspected extraction damage: Chen Yu believes Zhang Jiuge’s arrested cultivation and unnatural aging resulted from the elders extracting his Spirit Embryo Essence; Zhang refuses to explain his experience 153.
- Lethal disciple conflicts: Inner Sect disciples tell Chen Yu that disputes ending in death are considered ordinary 214.
Notable Members
- Sect Master Chu — Supreme leader. Destroys a Nascent Soul-level shadow avatar with two sword strikes without appearing personally; his rumored grave injury remains a source of political uncertainty 66 101.
- Elder Wu — Directs assessments, ruin exploration, covert operations, and institutional reforms; frequently delivers or implements the sect master’s orders 9 30 147 173.
- Sun Shengcheng — Former Emerald Cloud Outer Sect elder and lender. Uses debtors and injured disciples as resources; killed by Chen Yu, though the sect initially treats him as missing 104 140 147 151.
- Elder Li — Sun’s successor. Introduces lethal audits and stricter rules, later losing much of his independence when Gao Xuan returns 149 209.
- Elder Yun — Poison Path master of Nine-Bend Peak, ranked among the Inner Sect’s top five elders; mentors Chen Yu and Lü Yanyan 159 171 173.
- Gao Xuan — Emerald Cloud Peak master and leader of the 65-disciple competition delegation 209 216 218.
- Zhang Jiuge — Scripture Repository keeper and former registered disciple who reached the Outer Sect. Warns Chen Yu to keep a low profile, then unexpectedly joins Gao Xuan’s delegation 16 153 218.
- Chen Yu — Registered disciple who survives the promotion assessment, later joins Nine-Bend Peak and conceals his true cultivation while using the sect’s resources 13 167 202.
- Lü Yanyan — Emerald Cloud disciple who enters the Inner Sect with Chen Yu and secures a place on Nine-Bend Peak 153 154 171.
Relations with Other Factions
- Xia Kingdom — Protected country that sends recruits to the Dao Sect every three years 1.
- Evergreen Sect — External rival. Chen Yu links its distinctive bracelets to the new-disciple ambush; its disciples subsequently attack Dao Sect explorers 87 104.
- Jade Void Sect — Cooperates with the Evergreen Sect against the Dao Sect. Its disciples can receive loan-interest reductions for killing Dao Sect disciples 96 97.
- Soul Sect — Participates in Netherdark Sea exploration but initially appears outside the Evergreen–Jade Void alliance. Its disciples later cooperate opportunistically with Jade Void explorers 96.
- White Lotus Sect — Hidden organization seeking to replace the Dao Sect. Xiang Baiwei repeatedly tries to recruit Chen Yu; he refuses to commit to its struggle 81 149 170.
- Azure Void Society — Internal network promoting defection toward the Evergreen and Jade Void Sects. Chen Yu suspects the Dao Sect has infiltrated its ordinary membership, but this remains his inference 170 216.
- Ruins Sect — Vanished sect whose techniques, ruins, and lost poison knowledge remain valuable. A poison associated with its Poison Scripture becomes evidence in the investigation of Sun Shengcheng’s disappearance 98 147.
History and Major Events
Recruitment Harvest
Chen Yu’s first assessment exposes the sect’s recruitment system. Failed registered disciples volunteer for refinement under the influence of incense and reassuring speeches; the few who meet the cultivation threshold must still survive combat against Outer disciples. Chen Yu earns admission, replacing Emerald Cloud disciple Zhou Yun 9 11 13 15.
Immortal Ruins and the Escort Ambush
Six elders witness the Immortal Ruins appear above the Mass Burial Grounds. Elder Wu tests them with ten Outer disciples, discovering increasingly dangerous skeletons, a five-entry limit, and a barrier against cultivators above Foundation Establishment. He orders disciples from all Outer peaks except Purple Bamboo to enter at least three times 30.
An incoming disciple procession is later ambushed near the sect gates. Three elders destroy the attackers’ barrier but are overpowered by a Nascent Soul-level shadow talisman. Chu destroys its avatar; afterward, elders begin refining disciples with damaged meridians 63 66.
Netherdark Sea Expedition
The sect sends fifty Outer disciples to explore alongside the other great sects, promising 100 Contribution Points and half their discoveries. Privately, the elders regard the group as expendable and hope the expedition will buy time for the wounded sect master 86.
After exploration, Elder Sun executes disciples who fabricated their surveys or suffered severe injuries. Only six of the original fifty remain. Sun then kills rival disciples, while Chu’s projection warns the Evergreen and Jade Void leaders against covert attacks 104 105.
Disappearances and Internal Reorganization
Sun Shengcheng’s disappearance triggers a search focused partly on recovering Spirit Embryo Essence. Elder Wu also orders the elimination of three suspected spies, including a staged poisoning intended to implicate the Jade Void Sect 147.
Elder Li takes over Emerald Cloud Peak, conducting a lethal audit. Elder Du subsequently disappears, and the Outer Sect spends the following two years tightening rules and emphasizing cultivation efficiency. By Chen Yu’s entry into the Inner Sect, the Evergreen and Jade Void Sects have begun attacking, drawing Outer disciples into battle 149 151 170.
Black Mist Marsh Trial
Elder Wu announces three directives: prioritize Spirit Essence for ninth-layer disciples approaching Foundation Establishment, stop extracting spirit embryos from Foundation Establishment disciples, and send most recent Inner Sect recruits to Black Mist Marsh 173.
The trial becomes a suspected purge of concealed faction members. Chen Yu witnesses Xiao Lei execute a disciple after detecting hidden cultivation; only seventeen of fifty-three participants return. Elders Wu, Yun, and Zhou investigate the survivors and consider killing everyone except six identified witnesses if Elder Wang’s account holds 185 198 199.
Return of the Peak Masters and Competition Preparations
The five Outer Sect peak masters locate the legendary Forbidden Stele after nearly ten years away on Chu’s orders. Their return changes Outer Sect administration: Gao Xuan curtails Elder Li’s authority, while the Heavenly Union Association’s headquarters is demolished and converted into spirit fields 199 209.
The Dao Sect prepares a tournament with the Evergreen and Jade Void Sects. Gao Xuan leads sixty-five Inner disciples to the Eastern Continent’s central region, with Zhang Jiuge unexpectedly joining them. Meanwhile, Azure Void Society members discuss deliberately losing matches to signal defection and improve their chances of surviving a possible war 211 216 218.
