Background / History
In a past life, Xuanming received a Heavenly Register, died in the Outer Domain, and spent a hundred lifetimes in the Animal Realm. He eventually escaped, but Heaven’s disfavor continued to affect his fortune. Upper Mound’s karmic manipulation compounded that disadvantage 499.
His memories reveal childhood abuse, repeated calamities, and a lifetime of exploitation. Despite those setbacks, he cultivated for tens of thousands of years and developed an exceptionally resilient sense of self 496 497 499.
Xuanming stole the Netherbank Heavenly Dao’s root origin, destroyed its true body, slaughtered its people, and kept it suppressed beneath his seat for ten thousand years. His larger ambition was to establish a Netherworld Court and achieve Dao Integration 476 483.
Appearance
- Face: Utterly unremarkable; Chu Mo recognizes the same face on the God of Taiming 466 498.
- Clothing: Dark cyan Daoist robes in the figure preserved within his memories 498.
- Divided souls: Can appear identical to him, allowing his presence in separate realms 466 467.
Personality
Xuanming habitually maintains an even, controlled demeanor. He tolerates Yingnian’s mockery without anger and remains outwardly calm when events escape his control, partly because misfortune has become familiar to him 454 463.
He is patient, calculating, and willing to exploit followers, alliances, and entire realms. His preparations include cultivating reinforcements, concealing root origins, sacrificing disciples, and preserving memories as a contingency against complete destruction 474 495 498.
His composure conceals considerable resentment. Although Sect Master, he must accept decisions imposed by Upper Mound’s Dao Venerables, whom he privately regards as treating him like a plaything. His plans for Dao Integration also represent an attempt to escape those shackles 480 483 485.
Perseverance is his defining strength. Even when Chu Mo destabilizes his fate, Xuanming restores his identity by recalling the tribulations he endured. Chu Mo considers his fate among the toughest he has encountered and later responds sympathetically to his memories 497 499.
Abilities & Skills
Netherworld Root Origin
- Establishes a Netherworld domain that Xuanming regards as the foundation of his Dao 433.
- Conceals Banner Spirits within formlessness, making them difficult for newly established source wielders to locate 433.
- Makes him extremely difficult to track when he withdraws into [Netherworld] 486.
- Can attach root-origin mystiques to spirits; Chu Mo later adapts this approach for his own Yin Spirits 440.
Soul-Dividing Thought-Transformation Great Art
- Creator: Xuanming devised the art himself 466.
- Produces divided souls with strength in the same cultivation realm as his own 466.
- Maintains a divided soul in the Mountain Realm as the God of Taiming while his original self operates elsewhere 466.
- Allows a stationed divided soul to send another soul fragment to negotiate with the Blood Sea’s guardians 467.
- Communication with the original self can be blocked; Chu Mo exploits this when entering the Mountain Realm 474.
Netherworld Net and Illusions
- Nine divine avatars coordinate a vast net that seals the battlefield 474 475.
- Openings cut into the net rapidly repair themselves 475.
- Netherworld Illusions threaten to enthrall an opponent’s spirit and draw their Primordial Spirit into service under [Netherworld] 475.
- Xuanming can replace destroyed avatars while defending his seated manifestation 475.
Netherworld Prison and Underworld Law
- Manifests a domain of underworld offices, palaces, clerks, and Nether Lords 478 505.
- Repels or suppresses beings outside the Underworld; those belonging to it fall under its jurisdiction 505.
- His Command Seal can declare an area to be the Underworld, weakening Blood Dao power and even the attacks of Heavenly Daos 477.
- His Heaven Seal can impose law intended to bind a target permanently as a Ghost Enforcer 497.
- Limits: Chu Mo’s Netherworld nature lets him bypass one exclusionary restriction, while his developed authority over Life and Death eventually destroys Xuanming’s imposed laws 477 497.
Nether Lord Manifestation
- Creates a Nether Lord through his mystique as part of the manifested underworld court 478.
- Retains fundamental control over the manifestation even after Chu Mo grants it life 479.
- Can dismiss it into nether mist, though its brief rebellion gives Chu Mo an opening 478 479.
Survival and Identity Preservation
- Death-Evasion and Life-Prolonging: Sustains him during his increasingly unfavorable battle with Chu Mo 497.
- Fate resistance: Resists the countless Youxuans attempting to pull away his fate and redefine his identity 497.
- Memory contingency: Hides his memories within the Netherworld origin so that another being might inherit his experiences and continue as “Xuanming,” even after his body and soul perish 498.
- Limit: This contingency does not preserve an independent true self. The resulting memory fragment awakens within Chu Mo’s other-self manifestation and cannot oppose him 498 499.

- Netherbank Heavenly Dao — Bitter enemy seeking revenge for the theft of its origin, destruction of its body, slaughter of its people, and prolonged imprisonment 476.
- Heaven’s Will — Ultimate obstacle to his unauthorized Dao Integration; destroys him and his hidden backups 498.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Conflict over Life and Death
Xuanming admits that he deliberately drew three dragons into Chu Mo’s human tribulation to test his control of the root origin. He praises Chu Mo’s compatibility with the Heavenly Register, then uses outstanding karmic debts to pull him into [Netherworld] 432 433.
The confrontation establishes their competing aims: Chu Mo seeks independent command of Life and Death, while Xuanming expects the opportunities he supplied to advance his own Dao 432 478.
Mountain of Origin
Xuanming conceals the Mountain of Origin and maintains control through Divine Attendants, religious institutions, and agreements with the Life-Ending Society. He orders the continued suppression of its Heavenly Dao and authorizes a Divine War to supply fifth-tier beings to the Blood Sea 463 467 474.
Chu Mo infiltrates these arrangements through other-self aspects. When he enters the realm directly, Xuanming’s divided soul deploys nine avatars and calls on the Blood Dao trio, only for the supposed reinforcements to destroy it 474 475.
The released Heavenly Daos attack Xuanming’s original self. Chu Mo claims [Life], gains additional fortune, and turns their duel in his favor. Intervention by Baoyun and Shangyan Yanzhen leaves the root origin with Chu Mo while allowing Xuanming to retain his office 477 479 480.
Leadership Crisis
After losing access to the Life and Death Sources, Xuanming proposes using the Dragon King’s remains to establish a Netherworld Court. He persuades Baoyun by promising that reincarnation will remain subject to Upper Mound’s karmic debts 483.
Repeated assassination attempts expose his weakened authority. A motion to remove him fails only because Upper Mound and the Immortal Garden form a voting alliance. He then withdraws into [Netherworld] and dispatches hostile Dao Lords to the newly appeared grotto-heaven in Can Province 485 486.
Final Confrontation
Within the Azure Origin Spirit-Perching Grotto-Heaven, Xuanming traps Ji Heng and six allied Dao Lords in a Ghost Domain. He refines Mystic Daoist’s Primordial Spirit into the grotto-heaven, seals the battlefield, and prepares a confrontation from which neither he nor Chu Mo can escape 494 495.
His gathered followers instead attack him: they have become manifestations of Chu Mo’s All Beings Aspect. Chu Mo dismantles his weapons, anticipates his techniques, and repeatedly destabilizes his identity. Xuanming resists assimilation and unveils the Dragon Venerable’s Remnant Husk as his last resort 496 497.
Destruction and Memory Aftermath
Xuanming attempts Dao Integration using [Netherworld] alone, accepting that the resulting Dao would be a branch rather than the greater Dao supported by Life, Death, and Netherworld together. Chu Mo summons Heaven’s Will, whose lightning destroys the nascent court, Xuanming, and his backups 498.
His memory contingency then activates through the Netherworld origin. It appears to overwrite its recipient successfully, but the recipient is one of Chu Mo’s other selves. Chu Mo absorbs the fragment and examines Xuanming’s lifetime of suffering 498 499.
Xuanming’s knowledge subsequently helps Chu Mo comprehend [Netherworld]. A Xuanming manifestation also assists in dismantling the restrictive seals of his former treasures 502 505.
