Background / History
Summoning and exclusion
Naofumi arrives in Melromarc with Ren Amaki, Motoyasu Kitamura, Itsuki Kawasumi, and the unexpected fifth arrival, Ye Uchiha. The king asks them to repel the Waves, but initially overlooks Naofumi during the introductions. Comparing their experiences later reveals that the four Holy Heroes come from different versions of Japan 1 3.
Excited by the prospect of an adventure, Naofumi proposes forming a party with the other heroes. Officials reject the idea because Legendary Weapons interfere with one another’s growth when their wielders fight together. Unlike the other three Holy Heroes, he lacks knowledge of games resembling the new world 2 4.
No recruited adventurer initially chooses him. Myne eventually volunteers, restoring his optimism, and he receives 800 silver coins—200 more than each of the other three Holy Heroes 5.
Myne’s betrayal
After buying equipment, Naofumi wakes to find his money and belongings stolen. At the palace, Myne falsely accuses him of sexual assault, while Motoyasu wears Naofumi’s chainmail and claims it was her gift. Ye challenges the accusation by pointing out that an LV1 Shield Hero could not plausibly overpower an elite adventurer, but Myne supplies an excuse and the court continues condemning him 8 10 11.
Myne secretly taunts Naofumi, confirming her betrayal to him. His despair turns into hatred, and he demands to return home. The king says this is impossible until the Waves are resolved and refuses to sentence him because the kingdom still needs the Shield Hero 11 12.
Ye later helps him recognize the king’s likely involvement in planting evidence. Although Naofumi voices murderous threats, he hesitates when asked whether he could actually kill someone begging for mercy. He refuses Ye’s offer of money and prevents him from killing three adventurers who attempt to rob him 13 14.
Raphtalia and the defense of Lute Village
Needing someone capable of attacking, Naofumi purchases Raphtalia, a frightened young demi-human slave. He equips her with a dagger and clothes, intending to train her to fight while he protects her 15.
When the next Wave begins, Naofumi prioritizes endangered Lute Village rather than pursuing the boss. He sends Ye to fight the monster horde and heads to the village with Raphtalia and three undead familiars lent by Ye. His intervention keeps the village’s casualties relatively low 20 30.
Despite this contribution, Naofumi remains shunned at the victory banquet. Motoyasu challenges him over Raphtalia’s enslavement, and the king forces the duel by having her seized and threatening confiscation. Raphtalia’s attempt to explain that she accompanies Naofumi willingly is silenced 21 22.
Duel and departure from the capital
Naofumi withstands Motoyasu’s attacks despite being less than half his level. Unable to damage him with a punch, he uses biting balloon monsters and a dog-headed shield instead. Ye interrupts the duel and activates Pseudo-Infinite Tsukuyomi, catching Naofumi alongside the other heroes and assembled court. Gin subsequently reports Naofumi’s defeat, though the supplied account does not detail its resolution 24 25 29.
Naofumi and Raphtalia later rest and train near Lute Village. He witnesses Ye reshaping an abandoned mine and spars with Gin, whose attacks leave him struggling to defend without counterattacking. After several days, he departs with Raphtalia and Filo, taking a cart of goods and a traveling merchant’s permit 30 32 33 34.
Later Waves and independent travel
During Ye’s absence, Naofumi deals with the invasive Demon Flower released by Motoyasu. He also survives a near-fatal encounter with Glass during an earlier Wave because Filo carries him away quickly enough 145 152.
After Chaldea takes control of Melromarc, Ye leaves the missing Naofumi alone unless he becomes an enemy. They reunite during another Wave, when Naofumi finds Glass already captured by Ye and expresses no attachment to Melromarc’s continued independence 150 152.
Naofumi ultimately chooses traveling, trading, practicing medicine, and helping people over government service. He declines Ye’s offer to make him lord of a peaceful Chaldean territory, but suggests sparing Ren, Motoyasu, and Itsuki before sailing away with his companions 154.
Appearance
- Early build: Described by Ye as a scrawny shut-in during the royal hearing 11.
- After the betrayal: Messy hair, a gloomy expression, and a vicious gaze; Ye compares his clothing to a bandit chief’s outfit 19.
- Later attire: Still described as dressed like a barbarian bandit when he arrives at the island Wave 152.
- Identifying equipment: A shield bound to his arm; its Small Shield form appears diamond-shaped during the duel 24 26.
Personality
Naofumi initially approaches his summoning with an otaku’s enthusiasm, imagining friendship, adventure, and possible romance. Even after hearing that his class is supposedly weak, he quickly reassures himself that companions will compensate for his limitations. Myne’s betrayal replaces this optimism with distrust, anger, and fierce insistence on surviving independently 2 4 13 14.
His suffering affects his perception and everyday life: food becomes tasteless, and he continues seeing Raphtalia as the child he first purchased despite her physical growth. He initially assumes even she would abandon him without the slave contract. His interactions with Raphtalia and Elhart gradually make it harder for him to dismiss the world as a game 13 19 21 22 32.
Despite his bitterness, Naofumi retains concern for others. He protects civilians, refuses unnecessary killing, and later advocates mercy for the heroes who rejected him. His eventual preference is a leisurely life with his companions rather than authority or prestige 14 20 154.
Abilities & Skills
Shield defense
Naofumi’s strongest demonstrated combat asset is his ability to withstand attacks substantially above his level 24.
- Blocks dagger attacks from would-be robbers; the shield’s recoil knocks an attacker down 14.
- Repeatedly stops LV43 Motoyasu’s ordinary thrusts while at LV21 24.
- Suffers wounds from Rapid Thrust, but loses very little HP 24.
- Cannot reliably convert that durability into offense: his low attack power makes solo monster hunting and leveling painfully slow 13 14.
Legendary Shield forms
His Legendary Weapon can change form, giving him options beyond straightforward blocking 24.
- Small Shield: A diamond-shaped form used for the opening defense against Motoyasu 24.
- Two-headed black dog shield: Its heads extend and bite Motoyasu’s arm after blocking a thrust 24.
- Initial restrictions: Naofumi explains that his shield leaves him able to protect but needing a separate fighter to attack for him 15.
Improvised combat tactics
Naofumi exploits his defense to use live monsters against opponents when direct attacks fail 14 24.
- Uses an Orange Balloon Monster to repel an attempted robbery 14.
- Carries biting balloon monsters beneath his cloak without taking meaningful damage 24.
- Attaches a balloon monster to Motoyasu after discovering that his punch does not reduce the Spear Hero’s HP 24.
Trading and medicine
- Travels with a merchant’s permit and a cart loaded with goods 34.
- Includes trading, practicing medicine, and helping people in his chosen traveling lifestyle; specific medical techniques are not described 154.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Legendary Shield / Small Shield — His summoned weapon and primary defense; remains with him when his other belongings are stolen 2 10.
- Otherworld Clothing — Listed in his initial status panel 2.
- Chainmail — Purchased shortly after arrival, then taken from him and worn by Motoyasu, who attributes it to Myne 10.
- Cloak — Conceals balloon monsters used during the duel 24.
- Traveling merchant’s permit — Gift from the lord of Lute Village 34.
- Goods cart — Pulled by Filo when the party leaves Lute Village 34.
Relationships
- Raphtalia — Purchased as a slave to supply the offense he lacks. She declares that she stays willingly, while Naofumi fights to recover her when the king seizes her. She remains his traveling companion 15 22 154.
- Filo — Traveling companion and cart-puller. Her speed saves him from Glass, and he later treats her affectionately while discussing their future travels 34 152 154.
- Ye Uchiha — Defends Naofumi at the hearing and becomes a rare trusted friend. Their approaches to violence differ, and Naofumi declines both financial aid and a position within Chaldea 10 14 21 154.
- Myne — His first volunteer companion and eventual betrayer. She frames him, transfers his chainmail to Motoyasu, and later enjoys the scheme surrounding his forced duel 5 10 11 22.
- Motoyasu Kitamura — Fellow Holy Hero who believes Myne, confronts Naofumi, and challenges him over Raphtalia. Naofumi later recommends sparing him despite their hostility 10 22 24 154.
- Ren Amaki and Itsuki Kawasumi — Fellow Holy Heroes who condemn him and dismiss his account of the betrayal. He nevertheless argues that they are decent at heart when suggesting mercy 10 11 154.
- Aultcray Melromarc XXXII — Hostile king who presides over his condemnation and forces the duel. Naofumi later suspects him of helping arrange the frame-up 10 13 22.
- Elhart — Weapons-shop owner whose belief in Naofumi helps him recognize the world’s inhabitants as real people; provides Raphtalia’s clothes without charge 15 32.
- Gin Ichimaru — Ye’s companion, whose manner initially makes Naofumi uneasy. Later spars with him and overwhelms his ability to counterattack 30 33.
- Glass — Enemy from another world who nearly kills him during a Wave; her presence immediately puts him on guard at their later encounter 152.
