Background / History

Broken Engagement and the Three-Year Agreement

Nalan Yanran ended her engagement to Xiao Yan because she refused to marry someone she had never met merely to satisfy their elders. Xiao Yan experienced the rejection as a deep humiliation. Over three years of training under Yao Chen, defeating her became an obsession that his teacher feared could obstruct his future cultivation if left unresolved 247 249.

Ye Uchiha’s arrival changed the opportunities available to him. Ye claimed the Green Lotus Core Flame, cured Nalan Jie’s Searing Poison, and trained Nalan Yanran in ninjutsu specifically to test whether she could overturn her expected defeat against the world’s protagonist 228 242 247.

Encounter in the Magic Beast Mountain Range

Xiao Yan and Yao Chen watched Yun Yun fight the Amethyst Winged Lion King from hiding. When Yao Chen detected Ye Uchiha and estimated him to be at least a peak Dou Huang, he urgently ordered Xiao Yan to retreat. Xiao Yan escaped under his teacher’s Presence Concealment, while Ye noticed them but chose not to interfere 221.

Ye considered Xiao Yan a possible Chaldea recruit but rejected the idea because he distrusted his vindictiveness and expected him to cause trouble. This was Ye’s assessment, rather than a recruitment offer made to Xiao Yan 221.

Duel at the Mist Cloud Sect

Despite warnings about a mysterious expert at the sect, Xiao Yan climbed Mist Cloud Mountain to fulfill the Three-Year Agreement. Nalan Yanran apologized for the manner of the broken engagement while maintaining her right to choose her marriage. He rejected the apology and attacked 248 249.

Nalan’s Lightning Release Chakra Mode overwhelmed his opening assault. He attempted a battle of attrition, but her Chidori Current and Rasengan left him badly injured. Refusing Yao Chen’s advice to concede, he answered her Kirin with Flame Splitting Tsunami Ruler. Yao Chen’s soul power prevented the lightning from killing him 249 250 251.

Xiao Yan then rejected Nalan’s declaration that their grievances were settled. His Xuanhuang Flame restored his battered body, allowing him to fuse it with Yao Chen’s Bone-Chilling Flame and unleash the Flame Lotus of the Angry Buddha. Yun Shan intervened to blunt the explosion; Nalan survived with injuries, while Xiao Yan fled with Yao Chen controlling his body 252 253.

Pursuit and Loss of His Heavenly Flame

Yun Shan pursued Xiao Yan toward the Black-Corner Region. Xiao Yan refused an offer to spend three years at the Mist Cloud Sect in atonement and used another Flame Lotus against Yun Shan’s strongest technique. The exchange exhausted him without ending the pursuit 253 254.

Ling Ying intercepted a fatal attack but was killed after refusing to abandon his duty to protect Xiao Yan. Yao Chen then shielded his disciple, offered valuable pills in exchange for their release, and threatened mutual destruction when Yun Shan refused 254 255 256.

Ye Uchiha ended the confrontation by demanding both Heavenly Flames as the price of survival. Yao Chen surrendered his Bone-Chilling Flame and Xiao Yan’s Xuanhuang Flame. Ye allowed the pair to leave for the Izumo Empire, regarding Xiao Yan’s ability to find rare treasures as potentially more useful than his death 256 257.

Xiao Di and the Bloodline Sacrifices

Xiao Yan later stumbled into the ruined Xiao Realm and awakened a remnant soul of Xiao Di, the clan’s founding Dou Di. Xiao Di brought him to the ancestral Blood Pool, where painful bloodline tempering raised him to six-star Dou Sheng. His immediate response was to renew his vow of revenge against the Mist Cloud Sect 278.

While controlling Xiao Yan’s body, Xiao Di destroyed nearly the entire Hun Clan and killed Hun Tiandi. He also defeated the Void Swallowing Flame, which Xiao Yan refined with his assistance. Xiao Yan initially recoiled at sacrificing living survivors, but accepted Xiao Di’s blood-refining method as a means of gaining the strength needed to survive 281.

When Ye next encountered the body, Xiao Di claimed that Xiao Yan had willingly surrendered it to restore the Xiao Clan. Xiao Di had slaughtered the clans carrying Dou Di bloodlines and attained Dou Di power. Ye ultimately sealed him and the Ancient Realm inside a celestial body using Sage Art: Chibaku Tensei; no separate resolution for Xiao Yan is given 282 283.

Appearance

  • Build and features: A slender, handsome young man with delicate features and dark eyes 247 249 250.
  • Age in the later arc: Described as eighteen or nineteen while Xiao Di controls his body 281.
  • Recognizable equipment: Carries a pitch-black Heavy Xuan Ruler strapped to his back 247 248.
  • Blood-refining transformation: Blood-red inscriptions cover his skin, and a three-headed, eight-armed demon-god phantom appears behind him 281.

Personality

Xiao Yan is proud, emotionally driven, and unwilling to accept humiliation. At the Mist Cloud Sect, he stands firm under the crowd’s scrutiny, but his composure deteriorates as Nalan Yanran outmatches him. He refuses surrender because he believes victory must justify three years of hardship 249 250 252.

His determination also makes him reckless. Yao Chen describes a disciple who turns duels into deadly feuds and provokes additional enemies through mockery. Nevertheless, his teacher values his loyalty and respect for instruction, recognizing that his intense attachment to feelings helped make him worth teaching 248 250.

He is not wholly indifferent to cruelty: sacrificing living Hun clanspeople initially horrifies him. He ultimately suppresses that objection in favor of advancement, accepting the argument that a world ruled by strength leaves him little alternative 281.

Abilities & Skills

Dou Qi Combat

  • Physical conditioning: Years of training under Yao Chen let him remain conscious through Chidori Current’s pain and paralysis 250.
  • Movement technique: Uses rapid movement to prolong the duel rather than directly contest Nalan’s enhanced strength 249.
  • Dou Qi armor: Creates armor to protect himself while retreating from the Flame Lotus explosion 252.
  • Tactical limitation: Can adjust his strategy with guidance, but resentment repeatedly overrides Yao Chen’s advice to withdraw or concede 249 250.

Flame Splitting Tsunami Ruler

  • Classification: Low-level Earth Tier Dou Technique taught by Yao Chen approximately six months before the duel 250.
  • Mastery: Only at the introductory stage, yet sufficient to produce temporary Dou Ling-level output 250.
  • Application: Channels the technique through the Heavy Xuan Ruler to meet Kirin head-on 251.
  • Limitation: Does not independently protect him from Kirin; the metal ruler conducts its lightning, leaving Yao Chen to shield him 251.

Xuanhuang Flame

  • Regeneration: Heals wounds and accelerates recovery of stamina and Dou Qi 250 252.
  • Activation conditions: Its greatest restorative effects require a life-or-death struggle and exceptional fighting will; increasing desperation strengthens its effect 252.
  • Ranking: Last in the Heavenly Flame Rankings because so few hosts can fulfill its stringent conditions, not because its regenerative abilities are negligible 252.
  • Limit: Cannot replenish him quickly enough after repeated high-cost attacks 254.
  • Loss: Surrendered to Ye Uchiha through Yao Chen in exchange for their lives 257.

Flame Lotus of the Angry Buddha

  • Origin: A technique Xiao Yan devised through sudden inspiration during training 252.
  • Mechanism: Fuses two Heavenly Flames into an explosive lotus; his documented version combines Xuanhuang Flame with Yao Chen’s Bone-Chilling Flame 252 254.
  • Power: Threatens Dou Huang-level opponents and, with Yao Chen’s assistance, matches Yun Shan’s strongest attack in a destructive collision 252 254.
  • Risks: Does not distinguish friend from foe, endangers bystanders, and consumes enormous reserves. Yao Chen treats it as a forbidden move except in life-threatening circumstances 252 253 254.
  • Dependency: Its documented use requires his teacher’s flame and support; both contributing flames are later taken by Ye 252 257.

Dou Di Bloodline and Blood Refining

  • Inherited potential: Awakens ninety percent of Xiao Di’s Dou Di bloodline through ancestral Blood Pool tempering 278.
  • Blood-refining method: Absorbs other clans’ Dou Di bloodlines to strengthen himself and recover their residual Origin Energy 281.
  • Cost: Requires mass blood sacrifice and subjects him to extreme physical agony 281.
  • Control distinction: The later blood sea, regenerating blood demons, and claimed immortality are demonstrated by Xiao Di while occupying his body—not by an independently acting Xiao Yan 282.

Yao Chen’s Support

  • Concealment: Yao Chen hides his presence during the retreat from the Magic Beast Mountain Range 221.
  • Protection: Uses soul power to shield him from Kirin 251.
  • Body control: Takes over his body to escape at speeds exceeding those of a Dou Huang 253.
  • Limit: These are borrowed advantages that rapidly exhaust Yao Chen’s soul power 253 254 255.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Heavy Xuan Ruler — A tremendously heavy, pitch-black weapon that suppresses Dou Qi, breaks Nalan’s steel sword after repeated clashes, and channels Flame Splitting Tsunami Ruler 249 250.
  • Storage Ring — Houses Yao Chen’s soul during their travels and allows him to communicate with Xiao Yan mentally 247 249.
  • Void Swallowing Flame — The second-ranked Heavenly Flame. Xiao Yan refines it with Xiao Di’s help after the ancestor defeats it while controlling his body 281.

Relationships

  • Yao Chen / Yao Lao — Teacher, tactical adviser, and father-like protector. Repeatedly risks his soul power and life for Xiao Yan, including surrendering both Heavenly Flames to secure their survival 248 251 255 257.
  • Nalan Yanran — Former fiancée and opponent in the Three-Year Agreement. Her broken engagement becomes the focus of his resentment; he rejects both her apology and her later offer of reconciliation 247 249 252.
  • Ye Uchiha — Rival power who diverts his opportunities, trains Nalan, and takes his Xuanhuang Flame. Ye spares him partly because he sees value in his talent for finding treasures 228 247 256 257.
  • Yun Shan — Enemy who pursues him after the Flame Lotus attack. Xiao Yan refuses his proposed confinement, while Yun Shan fears his future potential too much to accept Yao Chen’s bargain 254 255 256.
  • Gu Xun’er — Loves Xiao Yan and orders Ling Ying to protect him secretly. Her fear that returning to her clan would separate them later affects her decisions at Jia Nan Academy 255 263.
  • Ling Ying — Secret protector acting on Gu Xun’er’s orders; dies confronting Yun Shan on Xiao Yan’s behalf 254 255.
  • Xiao Di — Founding ancestor who awakens his bloodline, teaches him blood refining, and ultimately occupies his body. Xiao Di claims this surrender was voluntary and intended to restore the clan 278 281 282.
