Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan — beyond Kage Level | 6 116 | Fused Izuna’s Mangekyō Sharingan with his own. This advancement placed him beyond ordinary Kage-level fighters. |
| Rinnegan — historical awakening | 112 | His Rinnegan was given to Nagato during Nagato’s childhood. The supplied account does not date Madara’s original awakening. |
| Enhanced Impure World Reincarnation | 116 | Kabuto resurrected him early as a specially prepared trump card. His regenerating body and limitless chakra allowed sustained use of destructive techniques; Kabuto claimed this incarnation exceeded his former peak. |
| Living resurrection; one Rinnegan restored | 122 | Forced Obito to perform Rinne Rebirth through a heart-seal and Black Zetsu’s possession. His reincarnated Rinnegan disappeared upon resurrection, so he took Obito’s eye. |
| Ten-Tails Jinchūriki / Six Paths form | 123 126 | Returned from the God Tree with vastly increased chakra and Truth-Seeking Orbs. His Ten-Tails-enhanced body subsequently saved him from Raditz’s otherwise fatal attack. |
| Both Rinnegan restored; God Tree absorbed | 126 | White Zetsu returned his remaining Rinnegan. Following a mysterious voice’s instructions, Madara absorbed the God Tree into himself for another increase in power. |
| Forehead Rinnegan / Infinite Tsukuyomi | 133 | Revealed an additional Rinnegan on his forehead and activated Infinite Tsukuyomi. Enkidu suppressed the growing God Tree, and Madara’s defeat ended the sustained illusion. |
| Six Paths power lost | 138 | Ye extracted the Ten-Tails after his capture. Madara retained his Rinnegan and Wood Release Sage Body but lost Six Paths mode. |
| Six Paths power regained through a cloned Ten-Tails | 157 159 | Obtained a Ten-Tails clone from Kenos through Ye on credit. Unleashed his sealed power at Marineford, restoring Six Paths form and agreeing to work off the debt. |
Background / History
Madara led the Uchiha clan during the Warring States era. Ye Uchiha was his younger cousin and close friend, although Madara’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan initially placed him well beyond Ye’s ordinary combat level. Confident in his own strength, Madara freely gave Ye the clan’s sacred Gunbai when asked 2 6 7.
Madara and Hashirama brought the Warring States period to an end. After the Uchiha and Senju joined forces, Madara initially welcomed Ye’s proposal to unify the Shinobi World under a centralized government. When Hashirama rejected the proposal because of its likely casualties and displacement, Madara remained silent rather than continuing to support it 28 31.
His later clash with Hashirama at the Valley of the End became a three-way battle when Ye intervened at Tobirama’s urging. Both combatants were too consumed by the fight to spare the would-be mediator. Ye exhausted his ocular power and died under their attacks, leaving a grievance that resurfaced when they met again 116 120.
Madara also rescued the young Obito and implanted Hashirama cells to keep him alive. Obito later carried on his plan and impersonated him, while Nagato possessed Madara’s Rinnegan and was expected to restore him through Rinne Rebirth 106 112 120.
Appearance
- Usual appearance: A cold, stern face, jet-black hair, and red armor from the Warring States period 117 159.
- Dōjutsu: Can shift between scarlet Mangekyō Sharingan and purple Rinnegan; later reveals a Rinnegan on his forehead 119 133 155.
- Six Paths form: His hair and skin become silver-white. He carries a black Six Paths Staff and is accompanied by Truth-Seeking Orbs 159 160.
- Hormone-induced transformation: Ivankov changes his body from male to female. An immediate attempt to reverse the transformation fails 161.
Personality
Madara is intensely proud, stubborn, and confident to the point of arrogance. His belief in personal strength makes him dismissive of both inherited weapons and weaker opponents. He mocks Kabuto as a “sewer rat” and initially treats reports of powerful enemies as excuses for incompetence 7 116.
He delights in dangerous combat. Pain and injuries from Whitebeard excite him rather than discourage him, and he openly acknowledges Whitebeard’s exceptional physical strength. Interruptions and humiliation, however, quickly turn that enthusiasm into rage 155 157.
His pursuit of peace rests on distrust of ordinary cooperation: he considers the Five Nations’ alliance fragile and believes an eternal dream can preserve peace. When Ye exposes the plan’s manipulation and consequences, Madara briefly doubts it but rejects the explanation rather than accept that his life’s work was founded on a lie 117 132.
Despite his pride, Madara uses opportunistic tactics when direct victory is uncertain. He waits for other combatants to weaken one another, seeks allies, and attempts to take Ye hostage. He later accepts paid service to Ye by reasoning that shinobi have always worked as hired fighters 131 132 133 159.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Genjutsu
His Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan provides the ocular power underlying his Uchiha techniques 6 116.
- Can intimidate and control tailed beasts through his eyes 120.
- Defeats Kizaru, Akainu, and Aokiji with genjutsu after their coordinated attacks fail 160.
- Uses familiarity with an opponent’s chakra, movements, and Susanoo to identify Ye beneath his Tajima disguise 119.
Susanoo
Madara manifests a blue chakra warrior ranging from a skeletal upper body to a complete, mountain-sized armored form 117 119 133.
- Wields enormous chakra swords and launches Yasaka Magatama projectiles 119 120.
- His complete form has wings that allow flight 122.
- Ordinary allied ninjutsu cannot damage his initial skeletal defense, but Heracles repeatedly breaks both skeletal and armored forms through raw strength 117.
- A sword strike during his attempted ambush of Ye splits the ground into a fissure nearly a kilometer wide 133.
Rinnegan
Madara uses gravitational forces, absorption, and sealing techniques through the Rinnegan 118 119 155.
- Shinra Tensei: Repels opponents and attacks. Its enlarged form devastates Marineford 155 156.
- Banshō Ten’in: Pulls targets toward him and exposes Aizen’s concealed position 133 155.
- Preta Path: Drains Heracles’s vitality and absorbs Akainu’s magma-based Devil Fruit attacks 118 155 160.
- Chibaku Tensei: Selected as a sealing solution to Heracles’s repeated resurrection, though Ye interrupts before he uses it 119.
Wood Release
His Wood Release Sage Body allows large-scale vegetation manipulation and wooden decoys 138 155.
- Advent of a World of Flowering Trees: Converts the battlefield into a forest that traps shinobi and restrains Heracles while draining his energy 117 118.
- Leaves Gaara’s force of more than ten thousand reduced to fewer than a thousand, with additional troops scattered or missing 118.
- Uses a wooden decoy to escape Aokiji’s freezing attack and strike from behind 155.
- Heracles becomes immune to the forest attack after reviving from it, forcing Madara to change tactics 118.
Limbo Clones
Madara employs four invisible Limbo clones to attack or escape an opponent 156.
- Uses them to escape Whitebeard’s restraining quake attack 156.
- Whitebeard can detect and defeat them; their injuries transfer to Madara when they return 157.
- In Six Paths form, one clone blocks Kizaru’s kick while another nearly destroys his head 159.
Six Paths Power and Regeneration
As the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, Madara gains overwhelming strength, Truth-Seeking Orbs, and an effectively immortal body 123 126 160.
- Truth-Seeking Orbs: Erase matter, form shields, and become weapons such as his Six Paths Staff 126 159 160.
- Sage Art: Yin Release Lightning Dispatch: Injures Akainu and Aokiji despite their Logia transformations 159.
- Survives Raditz’s devastating strike and Aizen’s fully incanted Black Coffin through his enhanced body 126 133.
- Regenerates after a combined beating from Garp and Sengoku while Whitebeard immobilizes his orbs 160.
- Can expand an orb into a battlefield-erasing threat, though Ulquiorra persuades him not to complete the attack 161.
- His immortality does not prevent chakra sealing or extraction of the Ten-Tails 133 138.
Fire Release and Close Combat
Madara combines Uchiha fire techniques with rapid hand-to-hand exchanges 119.
- Matches Ye’s Fire Release: Dragon Flame Song Technique, colliding four fire dragons against four 119.
- Exchanges more than a dozen taijutsu moves with Ye in a single breath 119.
- His fire attacks fail to injure Heracles 117.
- After restoring Six Paths mode, stops Whitebeard’s naginata with two fingers and sends him flying with a punch 159.
Infinite Tsukuyomi
Madara’s intended solution to war is a world-spanning genjutsu that traps its victims in an eternal dream 117 133.
- Activates it through his forehead Rinnegan while growing the God Tree 133.
- Sasuke’s Rinnegan-powered Susanoo shields both Sasuke and Naruto from its light 133.
- Enkidu suppresses the tree, while Ye’s system removes the illusion’s negative effect on him 133.
- The illusion begins collapsing once Madara no longer sustains it 134.
- Ye reveals that its victims would become White Zetsu and that the Naka Shrine tablet was altered to manipulate Madara 132.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Red Warring States armor — Worn during his reincarnated battlefield appearance and arrival at Marineford 117 155.
- Uchiha Gunbai — A sacred clan weapon capable of reflecting attacks and controlling Wind and Fire Release. Madara gave it to Ye before the novel’s main events 7.
- Uchiha Scythe — A sharp, indestructible clan weapon capable of severing chakra. With the Gunbai given away, this weapon passed to Obito as Madara’s successor 115.
- Six Paths Staff — Formed from pitch-black Truth-Seeking Orbs in Six Paths mode 159.
- Cloned Ten-Tails — Supplied through Ye on credit; restores Madara’s lost Six Paths power and creates his obligation to work for Ye 159.
Relationships
- Ye Uchiha — Younger cousin, close friend, rival, captor, and eventual employer. Their friendship survives considerable hostility, including Ye’s resentment over his death and Madara’s fury at Ye impersonating Tajima 2 7 119 120 159.
- Hashirama Senju — Old friend and defining rival. Their conflicting convictions produced the Valley of the End battle; Madara later tries to absorb him for additional power and remains irritated by his eagerness to spar 116 126 138.
- Izuna Uchiha — Beloved younger brother who gave Madara his eyes before dying. Sasuke’s resemblance to Izuna briefly unsettles Madara 116 131.
- Tajima Uchiha — Deceased father. Ye’s impersonation provokes immediate rage and an attack 106 119.
- Obito Uchiha — Rescued protégé and successor who impersonates him. Madara ultimately uses him as a sacrifice for Rinne Rebirth and takes his Rinnegan 106 112 122.
- Nagato — Recipient of Madara’s Rinnegan and intended agent of his resurrection. Nagato’s betrayal disrupts that arrangement 112 120.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Reincarnates Madara as his final trump card. Madara responds with contempt toward both Kabuto and the circumstances of his revival 115 116.
- Black Zetsu — Hidden manipulator behind his plan. Madara attacks him after learning the truth, only to be thrown aside by Kaguya 122 132 145.
- Whitebeard — Marineford opponent whose physical strength earns Madara’s explicit praise. Their duel becomes part of the joint Marine–pirate effort against Madara 156 157 159 160.
- Ivankov — Transforms Madara’s body and cannot immediately reverse it. Madara grants him three years to find a solution under threat of death 160 161.
- Ulquiorra — Intervenes respectfully to preserve Ye’s recruitment targets, persuading Madara to halt his threatened massacre 161.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Fourth Shinobi World War
Kabuto deploys Madara earlier than planned after Ye’s group overwhelms the reincarnated Kage. His arrival exposes the contradiction between the real Madara and the masked man using his name. He devastates Gaara’s forces, but Heracles’s strength and repeated resurrection force him to abandon straightforward attacks in favor of absorption and sealing 116 117 118 119.
Ye then reveals himself after fighting in Tajima’s appearance. Their Susanoo duel is interrupted by Obito, and the confrontation becomes a temporary alliance when Ye extracts the Eight-Tails and Nine-Tails and offers them for the Ten-Tails’ revival 119 120 121.
Madara restores his living body and acquires Six Paths power, only to discover that Raditz is still overwhelmingly stronger. After Raditz’s capture, Madara attempts to recruit Naruto and Sasuke, rejects Ye’s exposure of the Eye of the Moon Plan, and attacks. Aizen defeats him with Enkidu’s assistance after his attempt to seize Ye as a hostage fails 122 123 126 131 132 133.
Chaldea’s Conquest and Aftermath
Madara remains conscious after his defeat but temporarily lacks chakra. His presence still frightens the Allied forces, even as he privately questions his strength after encountering superior opponents. The Sage of Six Paths emerges from his weakening body before Ye’s forces secure him in chakra-suppressing chains 134 135 137.
Ye extracts the Ten-Tails, leaving Madara resentful but still powerful through his Rinnegan and Wood Release Sage Body. He later discovers Black Zetsu’s betrayal and attacks him, but Kaguya effortlessly stops him 138 145.
Marineford
Sent to the One Piece world by Ye, Madara appears at Marineford and is mistaken for Whitebeard’s ally. His indiscriminate attacks instead make him a threat to both Marines and pirates. Whitebeard initially offers a dangerous challenge, but repeated interruptions from Luffy and Ivankov provoke Madara into unleashing his sealed Six Paths power 155 156 157 159.
The Marines and Whitebeard Pirates unite against him. Madara overcomes the admirals and survives the combined assault of Whitebeard, Garp, and Sengoku before Ivankov transforms his body. Ulquiorra’s arrival prevents Madara from erasing the battlefield, and Madara leaves Ivankov alive only on condition that he reverse the change within three years 159 160 161.

“Do you want to dance too, weakling?” 155
“This pure physical strength... I acknowledge you. Of everyone I've fought, none can match you in taijutsu alone. I, Madara, declare you the strongest!” 157
Trivia
- Madara is identified as the previous generation’s reincarnation of Indra, while Hashirama was Asura’s reincarnation 123.
- Giving Ye the Gunbai changes Obito’s equipment: he inherits the chakra-severing Uchiha Scythe instead 115.
- On seeing a Giant Vice Admiral, Madara initially interprets the giant’s size as the Akimichi clan’s Multi-Size Technique 155.
- The author’s note accompanying his defeat by Aizen emphasizes that both fighters are powerful; Madara’s fear of being overwhelmed and Aizen’s concealed disloyalty shape the battle’s outcome 133.
