"He was nothing but trash."
Indra calmly stated the fact. They were all his unfilial descendants anyway.
"I read the Uchiha Clan's records. To preserve the purity of the bloodline, marriage outside the clan was forbidden after the fifth generation."
He calmed himself down and motioned for Madara Uchiha to sit, asking him to clear up his confusion.
The main reason he had forbidden marriage outside the clan was that he had discovered that children born from such unions had diluted bloodlines.
That was why he had banned it.
He simply hadn't expected these unfilial descendants to treat his words like so much hot air.
Now, some Uchiha died without ever awakening their Sharingan. Aside from carrying the Uchiha surname, they had no Uchiha bloodline to speak of.
"Uh... I don't really know about that." Madara Uchiha was rather embarrassed, unsure how to explain it to his older brother. After all, many prisoners of war were resources. The adults kept some of the attractive ones, while the ordinary ones were sent off to become courtesans. Any children they bore belonged to the Uchiha.
As for the ban on marrying outsiders, they hadn't married them. They had only had children with them.
"I haven't seen many female ninja among the Uchiha." A dangerous glint flashed in Indra's eyes. An outstanding descendant needed not only a father but also a mother. Children born to two strong parents were better.
Back then, he had taught his sons and daughters alike, and he had forbidden the Uchiha from reducing women to breeding tools.
That served no purpose beyond increasing their numbers and diluting their bloodline.
As for their physiological needs, he had never taken those into consideration.
For descendants of him, Indra Otsutsuki, letting their lower halves rule their brains was a disgrace.
"There are some, but not many. A lot of women have no talent as ninja. Even if they become ninja, they're weaker than the men. Aside from a few strong ones, the other female ninja all work in support roles."
Madara Uchiha explained the clan's circumstances. As he spoke, he began to feel that something was wrong. His older brother's gaze was growing colder and colder. But women were resources during the Warring States period. Compared with other clans, the Uchiha were already much better.
Besides, keeping women off the battlefield also prevented their bloodline limit from leaving the clan.
He didn't agree, but that was what the adults all said.
He thought that even the weakest adult female ninja would be stronger than a child ninja. After all, they had the advantage in experience, chakra, and stamina.
Indra rested his chin in his hand, his elbow braced on his knee, and silently watched Madara Uchiha's expression shift from confusion to inner conflict. Calm and composed as he was, anger still made the veins on his forehead throb.
His descendants had learned none of his good qualities, yet picked up a whole slew of the nobility's rotten habits.
He didn't deny that women were property in wartime, but so were men. Their value was simply different. More importantly, female ninja had an easier time awakening the Sharingan.
Back when he had allowed women onto the battlefield, he had never imagined that the Uchiha could be wiped out.
He wasn't Asura. He had none of that benevolence and love.
Under his rule, women worked like men, and men worked like beasts of burden. Unless they died fighting, they fought until they dropped.
Taken prisoner?
What a joke.
There was only death in battle.
He had never imagined these unfilial descendants would turn his rules on their head and keep the clan's women penned up. Clearly, they just didn't want to allocate more resources to them.
Anyone could handle support work. Put a young ninja in charge, bring in some civilians, and as long as they were given something to eat, they would work themselves to death.
"Nii-san," Madara Uchiha called softly. He could sense that his older brother was furious now, on the verge of exploding. He was even angrier than he had been upon seeing their father.
"It's nothing. Awaken your Sharingan within the next two weeks."
Indra reined in his emotions. It had been a long time since anyone had called him that. The last person had been Asura. It was so long ago that he had all but forgotten it.
Madara Uchiha: !!!
"It's not something I can awaken just because I want to. If it were that easy, every Uchiha would have the Sharingan."
Madara Uchiha thought this was pure fantasy. Utterly absurd. It was like a genius demanding that the class dunce take first place on an exam in two weeks.
And he was that dunce.
An unprecedented sense of defeat welled up inside him. He even felt like giving up altogether.
He had his older brother anyway. His brother would protect all his younger brothers, so perhaps there was nothing wrong with not working hard.
"Is it that difficult? Go pick two clansmen and kill them."
During his years of wandering, Indra had seen Madara Uchiha awaken a single-tomoe Sharingan just by parting ways with Hashirama Senju. Killing two clansmen to awaken a two-tomoe Sharingan should be no problem!
The reincarnation of his own chakra couldn't possibly be that bad.
If the trigger were right, even awakening it with two tomoe from the start wasn't impossible.
Madara Uchiha's eyes widened. He was so stunned that he couldn't get a single word out. He didn't even know what expression to give Indra, so he could only keep his face stiff, looking constipated.
"Haven't you been on the battlefield?" Indra noticed a problem. There was no way someone could go onto a battlefield without seeing bloodshed. Once someone had seen bloodshed, they wouldn't be so resistant to killing. Who was he putting on this... expression for?
Had that unfilial descendant Uchiha Tajima taken this reincarnated lump of his chakra onto the battlefield just to slack off?
"How on earth did you connect going onto the battlefield with killing two clansmen? Did you awaken your Sharingan by killing two clansmen?"
Madara Uchiha felt that something was wrong with his older brother's head, which he attributed to not having been educated in the clan.
"No. The first time I used my Sharingan was because of a dog. Killing clansmen wouldn't have helped. I had no feelings for them."
While Madara Uchiha thought something was wrong with Indra's head, Indra thought something was wrong with Madara Uchiha's head too.
"You..." Madara Uchiha had no idea what to say. This was all their father's fault. Not wanting to keep arguing over this topic, he changed the question. "When did you awaken your Sharingan?"
He figured that ought to work. Surely his brother wouldn't make him kill clansmen now.
"I was born with it. I first used it when I was about ten," Indra said casually. Mostly, he had lost control in a fit of rage back then, and it had activated on its own.
Madara Uchiha: ... Maybe Father's genes just weren't very good.
[Host, I think if you keep talking, Madara is going to give up entirely. He wanted to become stronger to protect his younger brothers. Now that he has you as his older brother, he wants to pass that responsibility on.]
Indra: ... Actually, having my soul dissipate wouldn't be so bad. Out of sight, out of mind.
Forget it. If parting ways is what awakens his Sharingan, then so be it. The reincarnation of Asura chakra isn't entirely useless. At least he can help Madara awaken his Sharingan. What a pain.
[Host, try to look on the bright side. You have to accept your descendants' mediocrity. Besides, Madara isn't mediocre. His time just hasn't come yet. You need to teach younger brothers from an early age.]
"There's no rush. I'll teach you how to train once we get back."
Indra made another attempt. Perhaps that unfilial descendant Uchiha Tajima's teaching was the problem. Under his guidance, Madara might improve faster. He certainly wouldn't end up getting his heart ripped out.
Even if Black Zetsu tried to rip his heart out, he would be able to dodge.
Madara Uchiha's eyes lit up. He didn't know why, but he had a gut feeling that his older brother was stronger than their father. With his guidance, he would soon join the ranks of the strong.
