These are talent assessments, not confirmed rank promotions. |
| Three-Tomoe Sharingan — first shown | 28 29 | His Sharingan remains unawakened in Chapter 28, but the next documented duel shows three tomoe and substantial improvements in taijutsu and Fire Release. The awakening itself is not shown. |
| Academy graduation | 31 38 | Passes the Clone Technique test with three convincing clones and is assigned to Team 7 with Naruto and Sakura. |
| Cursed Seal — first documented | 82 | The seal on his neck flares before his preliminary match against Zaku. Its application is not shown in the supplied passages. |
| Chidori mastered | 108 | Explicitly described as having only just mastered Chidori. |

| Wood Release brought under conscious control | 177 178 | Tests his new power and gains greatly increased chakra reserves and vitality, along with Yang Release and water and earth chakra natures. |
| Ryūchi Cave summoning contract | 179 | Signs the cave’s scroll after Toru negotiates access to senjutsu instruction. Signing the contract does not establish Sage Mode mastery. |
| Improved Wood Release combat | 180 | Half a month later, creates a forest and wooden spikes during a spar with Hinata and Karin, though their coordinated attacks defeat him. |
| Cursed Seal, first stage — demonstrated | 186 | Activates the seal during a spar with Naruto, gaining enough strength to evade and counter his enhanced attacks with ease. Toru stops the fight before Sasuke’s Chidori connects. |
Background / History
Academy and the Uchiha Massacre
Before the massacre, Sasuke is a reserved Academy student whose efforts revolve around earning Itachi’s recognition or surpassing him. He declines Toru’s challenge because he intends to train with his brother 3 15.
On the night of May 15, the Uchiha clan is slaughtered, and Konoha identifies Itachi as the killer and Sasuke as the sole survivor. Itachi’s Tsukuyomi forces Sasuke to repeatedly experience the slaughter, leaving him absent from school for a week and profoundly traumatized when he returns 24 25.
Toru offers a serious fight rather than consolation. Sasuke loses, but thanks him for treating him as an opponent instead of a victim and promises to surpass him. Subsequent duels reinforce that ambition; after another defeat, Sasuke honors their agreement by granting Toru access to the remaining Uchiha ninjutsu archive 25 26 29 30.
Team 7 and the Chunin Exams
Sasuke joins Team 7 alongside Naruto and Sakura. Before the exams, Rock Lee exposes the gap between Sharingan perception and physical speed: Sasuke can read Lee’s movements but struggles to respond until he copies a low kick 38 66.
In the Forest of Death, Orochimaru targets Sasuke’s bloodline and overwhelms Team 7. Sasuke attempts to escape with Naruto, then urges him to flee for help when escape fails. Naruto refuses to abandon him, and Toru ultimately frees both boys and drives Orochimaru away 75 76 79.
The encounter leaves Sasuke shaken by his weakness. He accepts Toru’s safety advice, asks to learn from him, and carries the unconscious Naruto to the Central Tower. Team 7 completes the second exam, and Sasuke proceeds into the individual rounds increasingly fixated on Toru’s power 79 80 81 82.
Becoming Toru’s Student
Sasuke’s attempts to secure instruction initially meet with rejection. After the invasion, he offers Toru a room at his home in exchange for secret techniques. Their bargaining turns into teasing and a mock fight, and Toru agrees to teach him 123 127.
When Itachi returns to Konoha, Sasuke attacks him with Chidori. Itachi effortlessly evades the attack, breaks his arm, and pins him down. Toru intervenes before another Tsukuyomi and carries Sasuke away under cover of his destructive attack 128 129 130.
Back at the Uchiha residence, Sasuke begs for power and offers everything he has. Toru makes him responsible for household chores and promises harsh training. Sasuke accepts, pledging that his life will belong to Toru after he kills Itachi 131.
Toru subsequently replaces extreme physical training with chakra theory, reading assignments, and water-walking exercises. He argues that Sasuke’s impatience and hatred obstruct his development, offering a personalized S-rank technique as an incentive to master the fundamentals 132 133 138.
Sound Attack and Bodily Transformation
Orochimaru sends the Sound Five to seize Sasuke as a replacement vessel. Sasuke and Karin resist the coordinated assault while Toru fights Kimimaro. Sasuke demonstrates Chidori Stream, counters Tayuya’s genjutsu, and later beheads her after Toru immobilizes the attackers 153 155 158 159.
Toru then explains the Mangekyō Sharingan’s eventual blindness and offers a dangerous alternative to transplanting a brother’s eyes: Hashirama cells. Sasuke accepts the risk without hesitation, prioritizing revenge over his own survival 162 163.
Accompanied by Toru, Sasuke raids Orochimaru’s base and later undergoes the transplant at the Northern Base. The operation awakens his Mangekyō Sharingan, Wood Release, and greatly enhanced vitality. Toru also prevents Orochimaru and Kabuto from secretly injecting substances intended to control him 167 173 174 175 176.
Toru secures a Ryūchi Cave contract, promised senjutsu instruction, and a Kusanagi Sword for Sasuke. Despite his growing strength, Sasuke loses a subsequent spar against Hinata and Karin through overconfidence. A later passage describes him as having defected, without detailing the departure 179 180 213.
Appearance
Sasuke has defiantly spiky black hair, dark eyes, and a habitually cold expression 1 15.
- Sharingan: His activated eyes become scarlet and display tomoe; the transplant later changes them into Mangekyō Sharingan 83 174.
- Cursed Seal: Located on his neck; black markings spread when he activates its first stage 82 186.
- Hashirama-cell mark: A pale patch over his heart forms Hashirama Senju’s face after surgery. Toru removes the visible surface traces but warns that the mark may reappear with emotional or chakra fluctuations 174 177.
- Temporary injury: Wears a cast after Itachi breaks his arm 129 132.
Personality
Sasuke is proud, terse, and intensely competitive. Even before losing his family, he keeps his distance from classmates and measures his efforts against Itachi. After the massacre, that reserve hardens into an icy exterior concealing grief, isolation, and a consuming desire for revenge 15 24 25.
He values respect more than sympathy. Toru’s willingness to fight him seriously earns his gratitude, while repeated defeats become reasons to train harder. His ambition also makes him willing to accept humiliating bargains, domestic servitude, and potentially fatal experimentation 26 30 127 131 163.
His loyalty survives beneath his fixation on power. He tries to save Naruto from Orochimaru and carries him to medical help. Nevertheless, rage can override his judgment, as shown by his impulsive attack on Itachi, and newfound strength can turn his confidence into arrogance or dangerous escalation 76 80 128 180 186.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
His Sharingan provides detailed combat perception and technique imitation; his Mangekyō awakens during the Hashirama-cell procedure 66 83 174.
- Reads movements, muscle activity, and chakra flow 83.
- Copies Rock Lee’s low kick and uses it against him 66.
- Resists and reverses Tayuya’s genjutsu 158.
- Rapidly identifies openings in Naruto’s shadow-clone attacks 186.
- Limit: Seeing an attack does not ensure his body can react quickly enough, as Lee demonstrates 66.
- Unconfirmed potential: Toru speculates about Perfect Susanoo with one Mangekyō eye and eventual Rinne Sharingan development. Neither is demonstrated in the supplied context 175.
Sage Eye and Inherited Potential
Sasuke possesses the red-tier Sage Eye trait, identified as the mark of Indra’s reincarnation and the foundation of his exceptional ocular potential 5.
- Supports the potential evolution of his Sharingan into higher forms 5.
- His Uchiha Yin power balances the transplanted Hashirama-cell Yang power during surgery, according to Toru 174 175.
- The penetrating vision and natural-energy perception Toru gains from copying this trait are not independently demonstrated by Sasuke.
Fire Release
Fire Release is one of his established specialties, supported by a blue-tier affinity 5 26.
- Great Fireball Technique: Opens a later duel against Toru with a large fireball 29.
- Phoenix Flower Jutsu: Uses it against the guards at Orochimaru’s base 167.
- Combines fire attacks with shuriken against Orochimaru, though a summoned snake counters them 75 76.
Lightning Release
His blue-tier lightning affinity develops into Chidori and its advanced applications 5 108 158.
- Chidori: Concentrates lightning in his hand for a piercing attack 128 158.
- Chidori Stream: Emits lightning throughout his body without hand seals, destroying Kidomaru’s web 158.
- Toru teaches him that lightning chakra can stimulate cells to increase speed and strength 85.
- Limit: Karin’s Adamantine Sealing Chains counter his Chidori during their later spar 180.
Wood Release and Enhanced Vitality
The successful cell transplant grants Wood Release, increased chakra reserves, physical vitality, Yang Release, and water and earth chakra natures 174 175 177.
- Creates a forest to trap Hinata and Karin and attacks with wooden spikes 180.
- Demonstrates unusually pure Wood Release and control compared with ordinary transplant recipients 177.
- Limit: His initial Wood Release does not match the First Hokage’s immense power 177.
- Potential: Toru describes an all-attribute constitution as a future possibility, not an achieved state 177.
Cursed Seal
The seal provides a substantial combat enhancement when its first stage activates 186.
- Allows him to evade and counter Naruto after the Nine-Tails’ chakra increases Naruto’s strength and speed 186.
- Remains usable after the Hashirama-cell transplant 174 186.
- No second-stage transformation is documented in the supplied context.
Taijutsu, Mobility, and Ninja Tools
Sasuke combines precise close combat with practiced throwing techniques and rapid movement 76 83 153 186.
- Uses the Body Flicker Technique while attempting to evacuate Naruto 76.
- Throws shuriken in a triangular formation to probe Zaku’s defenses 83.
- Coaches Karin on stance and punching fundamentals 153.
- Dismantles dozens of Naruto’s clones within seconds using knife-hand strikes, elbows, and kicks 186.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — “Sky Blade” — Orochimaru gives Sasuke a sealing scroll containing the sword after Toru pressures him to provide a suitable weapon 179.
- Shuriken — Used for probing attacks and in combination with Fire Release 75 76 83.
- Uchiha ninjutsu archive — Grants Toru access after losing their wager. Only basic fire and taijutsu scrolls remain; Sasuke says the village confiscated the advanced material or Itachi took it 30.
- Training reading list — Toru assigns two weeks of study alongside increasingly difficult water-walking exercises 133.
- Ryūchi Cave contract — Signed to establish access to the cave and a future course of senjutsu training 179.
Relationships
- Itachi Uchiha — Older brother, former idol, and revenge target. Sasuke’s desire for his recognition becomes hatred after the massacre, though admiration and longing remain entangled with that hatred 15 24 26 163.
- Toru Kujyo — Rival, protector, teacher, and self-appointed “big brother.” Sasuke increasingly trusts him to provide strength, while Toru also cultivates Sasuke for trait acquisition, system points, and strategic usefulness 26 64 75 103 127 131 179.
- Naruto Uzumaki — Team 7 comrade and competitive friend. They refuse to abandon one another against Orochimaru, but their rivalry later produces a spar dangerous enough for Toru to interrupt 76 82 186.
- Sakura Haruno — Teammate who is romantically interested in him. Sasuke watches her rivalry with Ino uneasily; she later begs him to stop attacking Naruto 38 86 186.
- Kakashi Hatake — Team 7’s teacher. Sasuke presses him for advanced Sharingan instruction 55.
- Karin — Training partner and ally against the Sound Four. He teaches her taijutsu, fights alongside her, and later loses to her coordinated teamwork with Hinata 153 158 180.
- Hinata Hyuga — Fellow student and sparring partner. Her growth repeatedly challenges his assumptions about strength; she defeats him with Karin’s support after his transplant 85 133 180.
- Orochimaru — Predatory pursuer who wants Sasuke’s body, later becoming his transplant collaborator and promised senjutsu instructor through Toru’s negotiations. Sasuke remains distrustful of him 153 167 173 176 179.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Administers the Hashirama-cell injections and produces Ryūchi Cave’s summoning scroll. Toru blocks his attempt to follow the operation with covert means of controlling Sasuke 174 176 179.
- Ino Yamanaka — Competes with Sakura for his attention during the preliminary matches 86.
Notable Quotes
“Today's fight taught me something. If I want revenge, I have to become stronger. Strong enough to surpass everyone.” 28
“My goal is simple too. Kill that man and avenge my parents and every clan member whose life he took. I'll pay any price to do it.” 64
Continuity Notes
- Sharingan stages vary between accounts: Three tomoe appear in Chapters 29, 83, and 158, while Chapter 66 depicts two and Chapter 163 explicitly describes an evolution from two to three 29 66 83 158 163.
- Kidomaru’s defeat has conflicting descriptions: Chapter 158 first depicts Sasuke knocking him unconscious, then recounts a lethal Chidori strike before Toru’s Wood Release engulfs the battlefield 158.
- Wood Release’s origin receives a later alternative attribution: The operation uses Hashirama cells, while Tsunade later credits Toru’s cells with Sasuke’s successful awakening 174 177 213.
