Background / History

Nagato was one of three war orphans taken in by Jiraiya in Amegakure, alongside Yahiko and Konan. Jiraiya remembers him as a clear-eyed, red-haired boy who wanted to use his power to protect his friends 120 182.

Although Jiraiya associated Nagato’s Rinnegan with his childhood, later explanations establish that the eyes belonged to Madara Uchiha and were transplanted. Nagato’s unusually strong Uzumaki constitution made him a suitable vessel 205 247.

Yahiko’s death became the foundation of Nagato’s identity as Pain. Claiming to have inherited Yahiko’s will, he used his friend’s corpse as Deva Path and declared himself a god. His pursuit of peace became a plan to gather the tailed beasts, create a world-destroying weapon, and force humanity to value peace through repeated suffering 182 183.

Physical damage from earlier battles and the prolonged burden of controlling the Six Paths weakened his original body. Before his restoration, he depended on a wheelchair and chakra receiver rods while directing his remote bodies from concealment 59 205 229 236.

Appearance

Nagato’s appearance changes sharply after the Hashirama-cell fusion, from an emaciated, wheelchair-bound man to a handsome, long-haired youth with a straight back and powerful physique 229 235.

  • Eyes: Pale-purple, ripple-patterned Rinnegan 218.
  • Hair: Red in childhood; gray-white before the fusion; restored to vivid red afterward 120 235.
  • Pre-fusion condition: Gaunt body fitted with black rods and tubes, with legs he cannot feel 229 234 235.
  • Post-fusion clothing: Streamlined white Tobi Armor covering his body 237.
  • Deva Path appearance: Yahiko’s orange-haired corpse, bearing black chakra receivers and Rinnegan, typically dressed in the Akatsuki’s black cloak patterned with red clouds 126 182.

Personality

As Pain, Nagato is cold, commanding, and convinced that overwhelming suffering is the only reliable teacher of peace. He treats his authority as divine and repeatedly refuses to abandon Amegakure, even after its location is exposed and retaliation becomes likely 127 183 208.

His confidence does not prevent tactical caution. He investigates an apparent rival Rinnegan wielder, adapts Akatsuki’s concealment rules, exploits divisions among the villages, and studies opponents during combat. Against Toru, he probes the distinction between chakra absorption and repulsive-force destruction rather than relying solely on stronger attacks 53 208 218 239 240.

Nagato remains deeply suspicious of Obito, whom he addresses as “Madara.” He questions the price of the proposed transplant and recognizes that the masked man has been using him. His desire to protect Konan and fulfill Yahiko’s dream ultimately overrides that distrust 234 235.

Beneath his godlike posture, he retains gratitude and attachment. He sincerely thanks Tobi after the fusion, gently closes Yahiko’s eyes, and responds tenderly to Konan’s joy at seeing him stand again 236 237.

Abilities & Skills

Rinnegan and the Six Paths of Pain

Nagato distributes his Rinnegan abilities among six controlled bodies. Their identifying features include black receiver rods and eyes resembling his own Rinnegan 214.

Path Documented abilities and uses
Deva Path Attraction, repulsion, and Planetary Devastation; Yahiko’s corpse serves as Nagato’s principal representative 182 183.
Asura Path Weaponized body, missile barrages, defensive interception, and rapid bodily repair 182 228 229.
Human Path Participates in coordinated attacks and threatens Killer B with chakra-disrupting black rods alongside Naraka Path 228.
Animal Path Summons creatures to overwhelm enemy squads 182.
Preta Path Absorbs ninjutsu and tailed-beast chakra; can feed absorbed energy to Deva Path through chakra conduits 224.
Naraka Path Retrieves damaged Path bodies for repair 229.
  • Remote operation: His original body can remain hidden with Konan while the Paths fight elsewhere 59.
  • Coordinated defense: Deva and Asura protect Preta Path against the Raikage’s physical attacks 228.
  • Physical vulnerability: Damage to a connected Path can make Nagato shudder and cough blood 229 233.
  • Direct access: He can use Path abilities without a separate Pain body, demonstrated when he absorbs Tobi’s chakra during the fusion 235.

Attraction and Repulsion

Nagato uses Banshō Ten’in to pull targets toward him and Shinra Tensei to repel, crush, or destroy them 182.

  • Pulls a fleeing Kumogakure captain back to Deva Path before killing him with concentrated repulsive force 182.
  • Uses repulsion defensively against physical charges and a compressed Tailed Beast Bomb 228 229.
  • After restoration, pulls Killer B with an attraction force described as more than a hundred times stronger than Deva Path’s earlier version 238.
  • Combines his sage body and Tobi Armor into Ultimate Shinra Tensei, whose collision with Toru’s force pulverizes surrounding forests and mountains 239.
  • Breaks apart a nation-destroying meteor and redirects its fragments skyward 243.
  • Limit: A powerful use of Shinra Tensei briefly immobilizes Deva Path, creating the opening in which the Raikage destroys Preta Path 229.

Planetary Devastation

Planetary Devastation creates a gravitational core that draws surrounding rubble upward to imprison a target 240.

  • Used during the annihilation of reconnaissance teams infiltrating Amegakure 183.
  • Deployed against Toru after Nagato tests his close-range abilities 240.
  • Cost: Its use contributes to Nagato’s severe chakra depletion when followed by his enormous wooden Buddha technique 243.

Chakra Absorption

The Preta Path allows Nagato to absorb chakra attacks and redirect that energy into his own power supply 224 235.

  • Absorbs Tobi’s Wood Release chakra to complete the Hashirama-cell fusion 235.
  • Drains much of the Eight-Tails’ chakra from Killer B after restraining him with wood 238.
  • Completely absorbs Toru’s Chidori Sharp Spear, replenishing Tobi in the process 240.
  • Survives a massive five-element explosion by absorbing it through the Tobi Armor 241.
  • Limit: The explosion pushes the armor close to its capacity; absorption does not make its energy supply unlimited 237 241.

Sage Body and Physical Enhancement

The fusion restores Nagato’s vitality, grants self-healing, and greatly increases his chakra reserves and physical power 235 238.

  • Regains youth, muscle, and the ability to stand independently 235 236.
  • Senses Toru’s distant ocular-power fluctuations after his Rinnegan strengthens 235.
  • Uses Asura Path power amplified by Tobi Armor to launch himself from the tower at supersonic speed 237.
  • Fights personally rather than remaining dependent on the Six Paths 236 239.
  • Limit: His restored reserves remain exhaustible; successive high-output techniques leave him kneeling and nearly out of chakra 243 244.

Wood Release

Nagato awakens Wood Release after absorbing Hashirama-cell power and Tobi’s chakra. Toru’s system initially describes his mastery as basic but his potential as unlimited 235 238.

  • Silent Killing Binding Technique: Restrains Killer B with barbed branches that disrupt his chakra 238.
  • Cutting Sprigs: Launches wooden spikes during close-range combat 240.
  • Large-scale forest: Channels Tobi’s life force into a vast forest to intercept falling meteors 241.
  • Sage Art: Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands: Creates an immense wooden Buddha that destroys a larger meteor with one punch 243.
  • Sage Art: Wood Release: Five Release Flame Pillar: Uses the Buddha’s dragon-head ornaments to combine five chakra natures and destroy the final meteor from within 243.

Other Ninjutsu and Combat Tactics

Nagato combines elemental attacks, shadow clones, and Rinnegan abilities to test and trap opponents 239 241.

  • Asura Path: Zero Style: Transforms the Tobi Armor’s arm into a chakra cannon and fires a concentrated red laser 239.
  • Shadow clones: Creates four clones for a coordinated five-element ambush 241.
  • Battlefield analysis: Identifies differences between Toru’s force manipulation and his own Rinnegan functions 240.
  • Command and infiltration: Directs Akatsuki’s withdrawal and activates planted agents within the Kumogakure army to cause internal chaos 223 237.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Tobi Armor — A living white suit formed from Tobi after the fusion. Provides chakra, Hashirama-cell enhancement, absorption support, and physical defense. It replenishes through Yang Release, Wood Release, or—most effectively—tailed-beast chakra 235 237 238.
  • Black chakra receiver rods — Maintain connections with the Pain bodies and can disrupt an opponent’s chakra. The rods supporting Nagato’s original body shatter after his restoration 228 236.
  • Demonic Statue of the Outer Path — Central to Akatsuki’s tailed-beast collection and the Eye of the Moon Plan. Obito presents Nagato’s connection to its vitality as a safeguard for the transplant 53 206 234.
  • Wheelchair and supporting tubes — Necessary before his physical restoration; the wheelchair collapses under his newly awakened power 234 236.

Relationships

  • Yahiko — Childhood companion and fellow student of Jiraiya. Nagato claims to inherit his will after his death and uses his corpse as Deva Path; fulfilling their shared dream remains a central motivation 182 183 236.
  • Konan — Closest companion and protector. She hides his original body, defends his account when Akatsuki is framed, and becomes the emotional reason he accepts the dangerous fusion 59 126 235 237.
  • Jiraiya — Former teacher. Their reunion exposes Nagato’s identity behind Pain and their opposing beliefs about peace; Jiraiya vows to stop him but withdraws to investigate the hidden impersonator 182 183.
  • Obito Uchiha / “Madara” — Uneasy collaborator whom Nagato distrusts. Obito arranges the restoration to preserve their plans, while recognizing that the resulting Nagato may become difficult to control 205 234 235 236.
  • Madara Uchiha — Original owner of Nagato’s transplanted Rinnegan; selected him as a vessel for the eyes 205 247.
  • Tobi — Fusion medium, living armor, and power source. Nagato thanks him for his sacrifice, although Tobi later appears capable of interfering with control of their shared body 236 238.
  • Toru Kujyo / “Otsutsuki Toneri” — Hidden rival who impersonates Pain and frames Akatsuki, then openly challenges Nagato while claiming to seek the Demonic Statue. Nagato does not know that the supposed lunar visitor is Toru 208 232 233.
  • Zetsu — Intelligence agents tasked with investigating the mysterious opponent and monitoring the villages, including Toru’s movements 53 218.
  • Sasori — Akatsuki subordinate whose report first alerts Pain to a rival wielding attraction, repulsion, and meteors 53.
  • Fourth Raikage A and Killer B — Battlefield opponents. Their teamwork destroys Preta Path; restored Nagato later overwhelms B and drains his tailed-beast chakra 229 238.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Investigation of the Rival Ocular Power

  • Sasori reports that a masked man named Toru Kujyo possesses gravity-related abilities surpassing Pain’s own. Nagato suspects a Rinnegan wielder attempting to create another set of Pain-like bodies 53.
  • He assembles all six Paths and rates the threat above S-rank. Obito recruits Itachi, while Konan conceals Nagato’s original body near the operation 57 58 59.
  • The ambush fails because the target never appears. After extended waiting, the assembled force withdraws 60.

Framing of Akatsuki

  • Toru impersonates Pain during attacks on Konoha’s underground facilities. Konoha subsequently publishes Deva Path’s portrait, assigns enormous bounties, and exposes Amegakure as Akatsuki’s headquarters 119 120 126.
  • Nagato denies killing Danzō. Konan confirms that he and the Six Paths remained in Amegakure, revealing that an unknown enemy has manipulated the organization 126.
  • He refuses to relocate, later explaining that the impersonator is trying to provoke world war and weaken Akatsuki. He permits members to remove their cloaks for concealment but insists the headquarters will remain 127 208.

Jiraiya’s Investigation

  • After annihilating a Kumogakure reconnaissance squad, Pain calls Jiraiya out of hiding. Jiraiya recognizes Yahiko’s face and then realizes Nagato is controlling his corpse 182.
  • Nagato explains his doctrine of peace through pain and directs Jiraiya toward the second Rinnegan wielder responsible for the attacks 183.
  • He allows Jiraiya to leave, then wipes out infiltrating intelligence teams from the major villages and smaller nations 183.

Kumogakure’s Assault on Amegakure

  • Following the Five Kage Summit, Nagato sees the villages’ failure to unite as a strategic advantage and orders continued surveillance 218.
  • He leads Akatsuki into a deliberate public confrontation with Kumogakure, using planted agents to disrupt its army 223.
  • The Six Paths counter the Raikage and Killer B’s coordinated attacks, but B’s full transformation creates an opening for A to destroy Preta Path 228 229.

Restoration and Battle with “Toneri”

  • Toru enters under the identity “Otsutsuki Toneri,” reveals the Tenseigan, and claims the Demonic Statue. He rapidly dismantles Nagato’s Paths, forcing Nagato to confront their limitations 230 232 233.
  • Obito offers Hashirama cells and Tobi as a path to independent combat. Nagato accepts after being reminded of Konan’s safety and Yahiko’s dream 234 235.
  • Restored Nagato evacuates Akatsuki, replenishes Tobi by draining Killer B, and engages Toru personally 237 238.
  • Their battle escalates from gravity clashes and close combat to Planetary Devastation, elemental ambushes, vast forests, and a meteor shower 239 240 241.
  • Nagato destroys three successive meteors but nearly exhausts himself and his armor. Toru also shows subtle signs of fatigue, and later intelligence reports describe the confrontation as a draw 243 244 245.

International Aftermath

  • Reports confirm Nagato’s possession of both Rinnegan and Wood Release. Village leaders begin treating him as the shinobi world’s strongest figure and Akatsuki as a force capable of opposing the entire world 245.
  • Kitsuchi identifies him as the Child of Prophecy once foretold by Hanzō 245.
  • His transformation unsettles the established villages: Sunagakure hopes he and Toneri weaken each other, while Tsunade questions how an Uzumaki could wield Hashirama’s Wood Release 246.
